don't judge a book by its cover!

I was wondering if there's a manga you were hesitant to read because of the art/description/etc.? But when you took the plunge it turned out to be better than you expected! I love hidden gems like that 🙂
For example, I didn't really want to read Silver Spoon because of the description, but when I started reading it I couldn't stop. Also Touch and Eyeshield 21 because they were shounen sports manga. But when I read those I was captivated _
Thank you!

Well, I avoided reading Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicle for quite a long time (mainly because I hadn't read any of Clamp's works before, but also 'cause I read the title wrong) before I finally decided to read it. I tend to avoid shoujo, but I've been surprised, and although I tend to avoid ecchi, Witch Hunter is in fact one of my favorite series. It's the same with Death Note and a lot of the series I find at the library, which can often surprise me. I guess manga's similar to books in that it can often be very surprising and unpredictable at the same time.

I avoided reading Endless World because of its cover... It's so weird and gives a creepy feeling. If I judged by the cover, I would say the manga is about surf or something like that. Anyway, so I read and, man, this is probably one of the best yaoi you will find out there. It's extremely sad and bittersweet.
I used to avoid sports manga, just like you. But then I watched Ookiku Furikabutte and I fell in love with it... After that I tried Eyeshield 21 too and it's so good! Oh, I also avoided Maison Ikkoku and Ranma 1/2, because I thought they were too old school, but they are good too!

When it comes to art style, the only one I can think of is Ouke No Monshou. I almost dropped it because I don't really like the art (too old and messy) but the plot/story is just too intriguing and captivating that I can't stop! And I'm glad I read it all the way cause it's really an awesome classic.

Zettai Karen Children is the most memorable example. And with that premise, can you really blame me? Seriously, I have no idea why I decided to start reading it, but I am so glad that I did because it has since become one of my favorite shounen mangas ever. It's just got this incredibly great balance between humor and plot and some amazing characters.
In general, I tend to be surprised more often than not by manga that I choose on a whim to read. Kekkaishi was another one that I had put off forever before I decided to try it (and loved it). I didn't start Billy Bat initially despite it being Urasawa Naoki (and hence guaranteed to be good) because those first few pages completely threw me off. And, it's even a bit shocking to me now thinking back to when I kept seeing Cesare but chose not to read it because the cover wasn't all that appealing. (Then I saw that it was written by Souryo Fuyumi and read it and loved it so.)

I would probably say Melo Holic. It's a webtoon and when I saw it, I thought that it was a typical romance story and I avoided it. But when I finished reading it, all I got to say is WOW. I literally read this in just six hours! It was so good! First it was all sweet because of the romance, then it went from romance to something else! Melo Holic is an example of why you shouldn't judge a book by its cover!

angel densetsu the art is just so ugly...like closer to realism than anime and delinquent/thug style, by it ended up being an amazing series i reread twice.

I TOTALLY AGREE WITH IT. 🙂
Well, anyway, I personally avoided reading Basara initially since the art looks old and the manga itself is really old. Nevertheless, I was very bored that time and I started reading it. Bam, it turned out to be damn awesome and I can't stop reading it!!! And I spent my entire day and night reading it non-stop! It's definitely a worth read, just don't mind the old artwork.
The other manga was Tantei Gakuen Q. I remembered trying to read it a few years ago during my summer break. I totally gave up after a few pages. The manga is wordy and the artwork is not really attractive to me. And then during the winter break, I was so damn bored and I finally decided to pick up that manga again. After patiently reading every word inside, I was hooked. Like seriously. I even borrowed the rest of the volumes I didn't have with my friend. It was damn awesome.
The third series that I'm hesitant to read is Emma. Honestly, the first time I saw the cover of the manga, I was like: damn, the drawings look a bit weird and forbidden love story? That's cliche. However, after reading through the comments and seeing how high the ratings are, I decided to give it a try. Omg, that's great! And I even come to love the art. It's definitely not as cliche as I thought too.
Come to think of it, there are certainly more mangas that I was hesitant to read it initially. Some of them include: Hagane no Renkinjutsushi(I only started reading it after seeing how my bro laugh while reading it), Hakushaku Cain Series(it's a gift from my aunt), and Yume no Shizuku, Ougon no Torikago(since the plot doesn't look appealing). But they've all turned out awesome!!!! 🙂

Parallel sounded like something I would like, but I had avoided reading because of the creepy pervy cover on mu, and the weird post-modern art style. Well, I read it and the art is good, solid, classic shounnen art that looks radically different than the cover shown, and the romance is sweet and innocent. :-)

Kyou Kara Ore Wa has terrible art, but it's brilliant. One of the best risks I took.
More recently, I thought NG Life has an iffy premise (past life In Italy + high school + romance) and cliched cover art, but it's surprisingly intelligent, funny, and well drawn.

Enchanter - the plot to which we are introduced in the first few chapters of the manga doesn't help, but the manga is actually quite good (don't trust the harem tag)

Molester Man
Tower of God
Noblesse
All three before had rather terrible images on their page and molester man is a rather off-putting title. However, their stories are amazing and the art of Tower of God and Noblesse improved greatly.
