New Poll - Fan Service
This week's poll is from our member arrha. If the series isn't supposed to be ecchi, what do you feel about any fan service that randomly shows up? Is it just weird and distracting? Or you think it's just a cherry on top? Examples of such things could be a panty shot, a beach/hot spring setting that doesn't seem to serve much point, appearing topless suddenly, pants falling off, a random shower scene, etc.

You can submit poll ideas here (and try to keep them manga/anime-related)
http://www.mangaupdates.com/showtopic.php?tid=3903

Previous Poll Results:
Question: Rate the last year (2013) in terms of its manga and anime

Below average (4) - votes: 882 (7.5%)
Bad (3) - votes: 261 (2.2%)
Very bad (2) - votes: 135 (1.1%)
Worst year ever (1) - votes: 201 (1.7%)
There were 11822 total votes.
The poll ended: January 4th 2014

I guess not bad. At least the votes aren't in a bell curve

It all depends on the situation for me. But when it show up out of nowhere (like when the heroine is walking down an empty street) with something that makes no sense in the situation (suddenly tripping and accidentally getting a mouthful of dong from the hero coming out of nowhere while all clothes fall off) it sort of annoy me. roll eyes

Which do I choose for "mildly annoying"? Saying I don't like it at all seems a bit strong.

Forgot the option: "Hate fan service that ruins the plot."

How many good manga that were ruined by it.

In most cases fan service feels like the obligatory sex scenes in hollywood movies. It sucks.
Don't mind the fan service if it's at least remotely funny or at least makes a tiny bit of sense, which it doesn't in most cases.
Ah... I still remember the bath scenes every 5 chapters in Eden no Ori. So annoying, it felt like the author was desperately trying to keep his series alive, even if it meant ruining it completely...

^This. I don't mind the occasional Marshmallow Hell or Accidental Pervert moment, but when a non-ecchi series starts relying on fanservice for most of its humor, it just cheapens the work as a whole. It feels like the author's desperate to draw in a demographic that wouldn't ordinarily read his/her work in a lazy (and futile) attempt to boost readership. I have nothing at all against ecchi manga, but if I want to read ecchi, I'm going to read ACTUAL ecchi, nothing else. There's a time and place for everything, and in my opinion, gratuitous fanservice has no place outside its own genre. eyes

Fanservice goes straight over my head these days. I hardly ever notice it as it's pretty damn standard. I have noticed an increase over the last year though.

...I went for bonus laugh

It depend for me.
When it's new fan-service stuffs i don't mind it, i even find it funny sometimes, but when it's fan-service stuff i saw hundreds of times already, it's really annoying.
Like the beach scenes, tripping and grabbing girl breast scene, or opening the bathroom doors and surprise a girl half nude or nude is there...
You have those things in pretty much every damn ecchi manga...

Can someone give me examples of this happening in a series? I can't remember the last time I read manga or watched an anime that surprised me with ecchiness. I could see it maybe as a bathing scene or a beach chapter/episode but don't consider most those to be tasteless when I'm not expecting them. confused

ditto. i can't remember if i've ever read a non-ecchi manga that still included fan service.

It generally fairly mild things. Things like an occasional panty shots and the very common, but mostly unnecessary, bath house and beach episodes. If the writer is good, the beach and bath house episodes could be plot relevant or at least necessary to tell something, but 9 times out of 10, its not.

I voted 'don't like it at all' but that's because I find it weird, mostly... just weird, and very occasionally, funny.

thread

» blake77 on January 4th, 2014, 4:51am

It depends if it fits the situation or seems forced. It is ok if it advances the storyline, but if it's fan service for the sake fan service then I would prefer that it wasn't there. So for me, it's between "Don't like it at all" and "Doesn't matter".

thread

» forgottenone666 on January 4th, 2014, 5:49am

I don't think I've ever seen this happen and even if I did the series was more than likely tagged adult so seeing stuff like that every now and again would be expected.

thread

» NightSwan on January 4th, 2014, 6:50am

No series like that comes to mind, but I can't say I'm against it.
I guess as long as the art's good and the ecchi is moderate (doesn't hinder the series), I say bring it on.
But I can definitely see how it can be annoying otherwise, especially at inappropriate moments.

thread

» SinsI on January 4th, 2014, 9:18am

A little hardcore sex scene in the beginning of a non-ecchi series can help set a "Mature" tone, signaling that the author is not going to resort to kindergarten level of romance and psychology. So, overall, I think it is a huge boon.
OTOH, if the "fan service" is something idiotic and immature like panty or boob shot - it can hurt the overall impression.

thread

» kitty1826x on January 4th, 2014, 9:42am

Doesn't matter to me.
Not really a fan of ecchi, or opposed to it. So any fan service that's suppose to be there or not doesn't matter to me.

» MatrixM on January 4th, 2014, 10:25am

Most of the time I don't like it. I'm thinking of the S;G movie where there was that shower scene the shot down Kurisu's shirt. I was like '...Seriously?'

But if it's a character like Faye Valentine, Cowboy Bebop is not an ecchi show but when you have a character like that, it's simply part of her character. The femme fatale type (though she isn't quite a femme fatale...)

thanks for this example. so i have encountered this. but its weird that while watching the movie i didn't think much about that scene, and i completely forgot about it afterwards. if it's a short scene, it doesn't even register as fan-service to me and i completely overlook it.

thread

» deshabille on January 4th, 2014, 11:59am

I really hate it if it's played solely for laughs or titillation. If there's an in-story purpose, like explicitly using it to comment on a character (women proud of their bodies, boys who can't function except as perverts and need to grow out of it) or as a way to approach the fanservice trope itself, then I can tolerate it. I'm also kind of more okay with it if it's equal opportunity fanservice.

thread

» Pebble_ on January 4th, 2014, 2:24pm

In most cases, I loathe it. Especially when you can tell its sole purpose is to appeal to a not-in-this-for-the-plot! audience, and it has nothing to do with the story. It breaks flow, it's bad for the atmosphere and it objectifies characters it's used on...

I like variety in manga... so an ecchi stuff in generally non-ecchi manga is like a bonus to me... I even increase rating of couple of mangas because of such stuff... Though if manga is extremely ecchi (or even hentai) I like it when mangaka insert a lot of non-sexual stuff =)

thread

» K Sky on January 4th, 2014, 6:33pm

It doesn't matter to me. Barely notice fan-service being in the series and if I do notice it doesn't bother me in the slightest. Some take it too seriously and blow the whole thing out of proportion.

I like fan services but I don‘t want it to be ruining to story... So if it‘s just a bonus, yeah...

thread

» Mamsmilk on January 4th, 2014, 7:26pm

Really depends. I don't avert it. It might even add to it, say, showing a full frontal is pretty fitting for a film noir themed work for example. I don't want anything hidden from me just because they might not be for my eyes according to some standard that isn't even mine, but then again, too much might muddle the point, but whatever, I am just another simply wired ape. I don't often seek things that are half-assedly lecherous. I just go for the hard stuff from the beginning if that is my motive. Sometimes authors and scriptwriters need to take shortcuts to create tension and embarrassment or are too lazy to create something complex when they can cut corners with something widely effective. The nature of real life in age restriction ratings would be not suitable for anyone, so seeing a bit of slightly erotic stuff here and there is actually a really watered down version of your own life, if you take the time to get to such situations, that is. I don't blame anyone for tossing it in their works, as for as long as I live, I don't get tired of staring at tits, asses, pubic hair and dicks when they make their appearance. That stuff doesn't get old, even though I do.

thread

» gwkimmy on January 4th, 2014, 8:52pm

i mean, if it's really jarring and occurs during a crucial part of the series and the series is fairly serious, then i'll be like -_-

but otherwise if the series is silly anyways, then yeah, BONUS 8D

(im referring to female fanservice scenes, though, where the dudes will randomly take their shirts off or make out with each other or something. you know 8D)

I'd love to see if the amount of clicks in hentai/dj is proportional to the %s here... or we have a bunch of double faced bunch biggrin

What do you mean? People might have different reasons for disliking ecchi. Some might think it's too softcore and thus annoying.

thread

» destroyer_ck on January 4th, 2014, 10:58pm

Don't care.
when it come to that kind of manga, i usually consider just the plot.
i don't care as long as it didn't ruin the story.
but if it did......... well, i just hope it can be ignored.

one of the example is flame of recca.
IMO, the ecchi part can be discard.
at least the author realize it, because after half story, the ecchi part getting lesser and even almost none.
(you don't see even kurenai that much at the last story).
IMO falme of recca will be better if the ecchi part got dicarded completely.

To make my point stronger about why there's no need for sex in anime/manga... Look at Moonlight mile its Almost the same as Space brothers in its central plot (two guys want to go to the moon), only the corners, chars, ambient is different BUT the most biggest difference is that one DOES have sex... yet the one without it manage to make a better use of the premise without having to use morbid sex...

i know some will complain about the demographic and stuff... about they are brothers and crap but... all of that is the different ways writers have to give us a central plot.

Ecchi is not needed, unless as maybe comic relieve. if u want boobs go watch/read hentai is my point biggrin, sometime in the future Japanese people will get that... i hope.

Depends on the style of art. If it's by my standards and I find the men attractive and appropriate for the circumstances plus sometimes it's randomly stuck in for humor and sometimes it does work for humor.

You know actually i think It would be more funny if the main char says "Now comes the fan service scene where i open the door and a half nude girl is changing" but when he opens it nothing happens.
