New Poll - World Transfer
This week's poll by lovelykitty6669 is a little long-winded, but I'm not quite sure how to shorten it and keep the same meaning. If your favorite manga (or anime, I guess) character from your favorite series appeared in front of you and gave you a chance to live in his/her world, but the catch is that you can never come back to the real world again, would you do it? Post a comment below about which series this happens to be and why you'd do it or not do it!

You can submit poll ideas here (and try to keep them manga/anime-related)
http://www.mangaupdates.com/showtopic.php?tid=3903

Question: Do you archive fansubs?
Choices:
Yes, everything - votes: 1525 (19.1%)
Only a few - votes: 2644 (33.1%)
I watch and then delete - votes: 749 (9.4%)
I only stream - votes: 1940 (24.3%)
I don't watch fansubs - votes: 1123 (14.1%)
There were 7981 total votes.
The poll ended: February 15th 2014

Less responses than the manga version, but that's to be expected since this is a manga site. However, it still appears that many people safe their fansubs, despite having much larger file sizes than manga.

Yes, i would go to almost any other world than earth.
Living on this planet is so damn boring.

thread

» JustPassingBy on February 15th, 2014, 6:37am

I dunno, living on a world with plenty of characters with enough power to blow it up and in a world where the entire world population has died once does not sound nice to me (dragonball).

thread

» darkraiders on February 15th, 2014, 6:47am

Well, i never said i would like to live in Dragonball world.

thread

» quark1020 on February 14th, 2014, 11:56pm

Noooooo

Most of the manga I enjoy to read seems to have something that wants to destroy the world/universe/reality or something for some reason. I'm fine here, thank you very much.

thread

» SilverStorm on February 15th, 2014, 12:28am

Probably not.

I'd be too worried about the people/things I leave behind. Maybe if I knew there wouldn't be problems back at home, and I'd be livin' the life in the new world I wouldn't so much...but I like psycho characters with unhealthy obsessions. I don't foresee a happy ending, at least not on my end. xD

Yep, as long as its fun in that series,
No to something like Akame ga Kiru!

Yes, definitely for most of those worlds. Not sth like Attack on Titan though hehe. I can't bear living everyday in fear.

thread

» Scyfon on February 15th, 2014, 1:25am

Kinda pointless if your favorite series happens to be a slice of life, innit?
Seriously though, teenage me would've said yes quite easily. Now...maybe not so much.

thread

» pyonk on February 15th, 2014, 1:44am

My favorite series is Code Geass (anime) and One Piece (manga)
so ABSOLUTELY YES.
my life here is sooo boring i need to escape.

thread

» onizukaa on February 15th, 2014, 1:53am

It really depends on if whether or not the underlying features of the world i go to would apply to me or not.

An example would be Infinite Stratos. Would I be entitled to pilot one, or would it reject me as someone foreign to the world?

thread

» ChildofSecrets on February 15th, 2014, 1:55am

Mmm this one's hard. Not too long ago I would've said yes in a heartbeat. But thinking about my family and everything I've worked for/endured until now would be sad to leave behind. It'd be more or less traumatic to suddenly abandon something you've accepted as a definitive reality for so long.

That said, I think if that world offered greater opportunities, adventure and/or I was able to contact love ones of my whereabouts, I would say yes. Imagined realms have potentially far less limitations than Earth. And they're just more awesome in general

EDIT: I feel like the poll should be "if a character from your favorite manga..." because my favorite manga characters probably come from somewhere I wouldn't want to visit..

thread

» Chinmay on February 15th, 2014, 2:32am

Yes I would, But only if the Tsubasa: RESERVoir CHRoNiCLE Logic applies. In that If go to this said world, I would be like them aka if the world has powers I would also get that kind of power based on my nature and such.
And I got to many Favorites...

One Piece - I would Join Luffy's crew, I like Wind (ever since Kaze no Stigma) and Trees, so I would want Wind Wind no fruit, or Tree Tree no Fruit.

Fairy Tail - I would Join Fairy Tail, would want to join on missions with Natsu and all, but also would not mind going on lone quest. Magic preference would be Air Elemental Magic, with a side of expert potion mixture.

UQ Holder! - I would join this big universe of magic. Immortal by werewolf with some whatever werewolf magic there is in the world.

Naruto - Post Current war... I don't want to get involved in that. As Hyūga Clan member, who eventually masters Sage Mode, and can summon a 3 - 5 meter wolf to help fight, able to go bigger.

Shijou Saikyou no Deshi Kenichi - Join the Dojo and master Muay Thai and Kosaka Style

Shit to much to pick from, but one of them.

Actually nope still pretty sure I'd die.

thread

» xxmichellexx27f on February 15th, 2014, 7:55am

I don't hold things dear, so sadly enough I don't think I would regret leaving anything in this world. But it truly depends on what kinda world will I enter, and will I be at advantage or disadvantage there.

Mostly tough, I better go to a world from shounen manga than shoujo manga, since how unrealistic shoujo romance can be, it's more possible in this world than shounen's. Since if I were to enter a different world, I hope it will be a whole new world, I'm bored.

No, I could never give up my life and dreams here. I could never say goodbye to my friends and family. I could never leave my pets. I love manga, but I love my real life too much to ever leave it behind. I'm going to creat a new vaccine and open an animal shelter one day!

My favourite anime is Code Geass. My favourite character is Lelouch.
My favourite manga is Banana Fish. My favourite character is Ash.
My favourite game is Final Fantasy VII. My favourite character is Cloud.

I think it helps that none of those worlds are exactly easy or appealing. Lots of fighting to the death going on, lol.

thread

» imercenary on February 15th, 2014, 9:42am

Lolno.

Most manga worlds are either god forsaken hellholes or hyper exaggerated versions of our own world (I'm looking at you shoujo/ecchi/harem/comedy/slice of life genres).

A lot of people in the comments also seem to assume that going to said world would give them similar powers as the main cast. In other words, if you added the line "but you remain the same as you were in the real world", I wonder how many people will still say Yes.

thread

» Juuza on February 15th, 2014, 10:03am

1) Is it only limited to existing manga / anime series or one's own works?

2) Does it also entail a full swap between one's self here in the real-world to the specific setting and one's potential alternate self in the specific setting to the real-world or would it be limited to only both selves consciousness's being switched?

Would probably lean on No because dragging my alternate self to this world while leaving to live in his setting would be a shitty thing for me to do and even without any alternate self in the equation, I couldn't simply leave everything behind here.

Still, the possibilities and limitations of the alternate world would be very tempting compared to the real-world.

Well considering that my favourite characters in mangas are usually girl, who I consider to be ideal for me (I will not name them, but they are usually smart and maybe nerdy type of girls and often not main characters) then why not if it involves marrying them and having family =)

This poll made me think hard if I even have a favorite manga character (and if manga based on anime based on light novels count).

My conclusion is that my favorite manga character is most likely found in Yotsubato, and even though I couldn't exactly choose which one, their world is ours, so...

thread

» nunya_bishieness on February 15th, 2014, 10:26am

Yes. Definitely. In a heartbeat. (as long as it's not a world in which i would die in a second. Being a cold stiff corpse doesn't exactly seem appealing dead )
Guess that's because I don't have any obligations yet. Things i would miss the most would be my books/manga, my laptop and maybe my brother laugh

Quote

I suppose it would suck if your're the only one without special powers, so something like Pokemon, Beyblade, Bakugan etc. which involves training other creatures to fight your battles would be cool. (on second thought that sounds pretty darn selfish, makes me question my childhood choices lol)

One Piece also seems earthling friendly, although I suppose you could still die of an allergic reaction to Demon Fruit.(if you want to go there).

A historical manga like Cesare or Historie would be exciting too.

I wouldn't worry too much about not coming back; if you are the mc or atleast a part of the core team, manga logic states that you'll find your way back against all odds smile wink grin

Well, my favorite manga character(s) are usually in pretty safe, normal places with some battle/conflict but not enough I would feel endangered so yeah. I'd feel horrible for my family but 6+ months of job searching without much success, all the crap with my sister's wedding, and the utter fear and shock of being an aunt to be have me in a running away mood.

thread

Hell no.

Ever hear the quote, "A nice place to visit, but I wouldn't want to live there"?
Or the curse, " May you live in interesting times."?
Or more simply, "Cannon fodder"

thread

» BlackOrion on February 15th, 2014, 4:56pm

Sure i would, right now I think Kingdom is my favourite manga, and I would love nothing more than fighting to the dead, too bad for the people that love me see you in Valhalla if you ever come by (I'm aware that Valhalla doesn't fit in the Chinese lore, but I sure hope I would go there by fighting to the dead)

thread

» Iheartz on February 15th, 2014, 5:23pm

Most people don't realize that they'll probably going to still be themselves in said world (aka, without any special powers or anything). So, they'll only end up as cannon fodder in any battle/war manga or as one of the faceless characters in any slice-of-life/ecchi/peaceful manga.

thread

» nightazday on February 16th, 2014, 12:37am

The poll seems to imply that you'll probably be in a better position than that. Though even then if your favorite character was someone from series like Berserk I can't see anyone agreeing to go there.

thread

» imercenary on February 16th, 2014, 11:01pm

Actually, no. The poll doesn't imply that. Its a Freudian slip.

People read the poll question as "Go into his/her world in the series" and assume 'with roughly the same situation/strokes of luck/powers/abilities/level as him/her'.

thread

» nightazday on February 18th, 2014, 4:52pm

Well it didn't say the opposite either. I'm sure in that world you'll be supplied with the same plot armor a lot of the cast has.

thread

» Harukko on February 15th, 2014, 8:57pm

Lol. I sometimes prefer manga with a bit of action...so NO THANKS. I'd rather be a spectator, and watch from the sidelines than go there and get myself killed in the first chapters.
Besides even if it was just a regular shoujo manga... there's no guarantee that I'll get the main character... I'd probably be bullied by the main female character. Lol. I can see my romance manga turning into a drama Hahaha. XD

thread

» reanmeih on February 15th, 2014, 11:42pm

Would have, totally. Not now though... not when I found a crush.

But still... I would be really tempted, and extremely regret not being able to. Anything fiction would be better than Earth. Magic, Ancient China, kings and queens and emperors, demons and faeries and elves, just about anything would beat the current world.

Noticed? I love fantasy. Things that can make me a mage especially, and things that give me a lord to serve. Being Chinese, Ancient China is definitely a place for admiration. If only it was still under imperial rule... I'm not too picky, a lot of mangas would have done well. Oh even places like SAO would have rocked hell! I mean, who doesn't want to play VRMMORPGs? I'm still waiting. One day... one day.

Yup, I'd probably not survive, as I am now. Even if I die soon, it's worth it, and I believe I have the ability to adapt... maybe. But I would love to go. Except... I won't. T^T

As for family and friends and all that, I'd even leave the internet, who cares about those? But, bottom line is, no slice-of-life or anything realistic (perhaps except for Bakuman... I want those mangas lol), but I still won't.

Oh how I wish the characters in Pokémon were more likable than Yona from Akatsuki no Yona or Holo from Spice and Wolf (I mean the anime here, I actually haven't read the manga). That would've made it a yes. xD

-- EDIT --

After reading the other comments, I felt the need to add, I would only enter pokémon if,

A) I could bring my family

Or,

B) It would be as if I'd been born in that world; so no one would miss me and I wouldn't miss anyone.

thread

» Hanae on February 16th, 2014, 1:16pm

I actually surprised myself with this decision, but I wouldn't. For the same reasons as the reasons why I wouldn't commit suicide:
1. I don't like taking "no turning back" decisions - what if I actually hate being in that world after some time? What if I start to miss my old world?
2. I wouldn't be able to leave my family - even if they knew I wasn't dead, just in another world, they would be devastated.
3. I don't think running away is a good way of solving problems. Maybe at first I would feel good there, but I'm sure that after some time my old problems would return. Or worse, even bigger problems would arise.
4. I'm fine with my boring, dull existence biggrin

my three most favorite mangas take place in terrifying worlds.

Berserk, Gantz, and Akira. None of those contain a world that is less than horrific.

thread

» butako chan on February 16th, 2014, 2:29pm

My current favourite character is Greed from FMAB. While the world is intriguing to watch as an anime, I don't think i would stay content in that world for very long considering the simple lifestyle and older technology. I also doubt I would have the ability to become an alchemist myself; you would have to be gifted with intelligence, talent and a continual diligence. It's that 1% of the population that can become alchemist and I would be in the latter 99%.

Additionally, I'm not completely detached from this world. Therefore, I would miss my family and friends. Perhaps I wouldn't mind being born into the world of FMAB, but leaving my current world in favour of a completely strange place by MYSELF...no.

Unfortunately, the genre of manga I like the most is Seinen...and its worlds are rather dark and horrific. With my current level of fighting abilities, I doubt I would survive long. On the other hand, shounen worlds like Naruto, Pokemon and One Piece seems to be interesting places to visit if it were only temporary (I mean who hasn't wanted a pokemon before?).

thread

» KaoriNite on February 16th, 2014, 10:25pm

Probably not. I'm too indecisive to decide on a favorite character, but my favorite manga are mostly yaoi. So unless I was transformed into a gay man, it would be pretty pointless to go their world.

My other favorite manga are slice of life (shojo and josei), so I'd basically be living the same kind of life if I were transferred to one of those worlds.

I may actually do it depending on what sort of reality the character lives in. I'm not saying my current life is at all bad--I'm actually very happy, but I'm always open to opportunities that could make me even happier (and what could be happier than a fantasy?).

My main fear in this "reality transfer" is that the new reality could then be limited by the author's imagination. And really, science shows time and time again that the current reality we live in is less predictable than any human could possibly imagine, and I wouldn't want to lose that.
