Remembering Franky House
There once was a group named Franky House. I'm sure you've heard about it before. It was going great. But as with all things on earth, it was not meant to last. Here is their story:
http://thefolenangel.wordpress.com/2011/04/16/303/

Edit: To clarify, Franky House has been dead for about half a year now.

Even Franky House? Reaaallly sad... sad

thread

» darck on April 17th, 2011, 4:00pm

they were dead along time ago, but still sad thing

thread

» Ferozban on April 17th, 2011, 4:27pm

i think the died the moment they were created.
they scanlated all the mainstream stuff everyone else was scanlating allready.

their competitors were bink, mangastream, japflap, whatever, sleepy and so on and so on.

and their quality was abismal..so from my perspective. nothing was gained and nothing was lost now either.

thread

» naruto6302 on April 17th, 2011, 5:59pm

honestly, if you got nothing good to say, just keep it to yourself, at one point, mangastream, sleepy, etc weren't even existed and FH released their stuff on schedule for the most part.

» GGpX on April 17th, 2011, 6:02pm

Yes, because Franky-House was created before Null, Inane, Shannaro, Manga-Rain, JapFlap, and so on. You know, the groups Franky-House stole the projects from?

Oh wait, F-H wasn't created before them.

Take your own advice and shut up.

thread

» naruto6302 on April 20th, 2011, 9:12pm

did i said anything about it what group stole from what group? i merely stated that at one point, there was no group that scanlated One Piece early which is really the only series i followed so i know fairly well at the period which no other group scan it early, land did i even mentioned those groups you mentioned or put them down in any way shape or form? Someone need to take reading class

and @Ferozban
if you want quality, pay for it, leecher should just shut up and accept what's given them or simply shut up

thread

» Ferozban on April 21st, 2011, 12:43pm

exactly! leechers should shut up, so why don't you?
leechers like you are the reason bad groups like franky house exsist. you want the manga without paying for it and translated and edited as fast as possible.
maybe they were a few hours faster then binkopia, null, japflap and other groups. who cares? i rather wait a few hours instead of reading garbadge.
again you should take you're own advice and take some reading classes... and some brains wouldnt hurt you either.
ggpx mentioned those groups since you didnt seem to get why i mentioned groups. franky house did nothing but steal and release at a bad quaility. they dont deserve anything for it.
the groups that scantlate stuff to honor the mangakas work and not to get a few thousand hit on their website as fast as possible deserve respect.
leechers like you even get quality without paying for it, just by beeing patient.

so shut up leecher and suck up your fanboyism.

ohh and before i forget .... i translated (from german to english), edited and i provided raws for a short time...so much for that, try better next time or crawl back to the cave you came from.

thread

» Jackall on April 22nd, 2011, 11:37pm

aww mann.. you're too much he might be just a little boy who lost here (just look at his nickname) and don't wanna buy any manga and just want to read them freely cause he don't have any idea that it's SO DAMN HARD TO MAKE A SINGLE PAGE OF MANGA!

oh.. why do you think I know it? coz im an artist either.
so, naruto6302 just sit down please and enjoy the respectable scanlation group to take care of your fav manga.
YEAH HAPPY ENDING

thread

» Ferozban on April 18th, 2011, 8:38am

did i hurt a little fh fanboy?
what is this? some kind of funeral? "please say nothing bad a about a dead person"?
ggpx is right, shut up if you got nothing of value to say. not only did they steal work, they had the lowest quality and there were dozents of competing groups. the ones i mentioned were just a few examples iditot.
franky house never had what it takes to stay long.

thread

» thefolenangel on April 21st, 2011, 2:49pm

lol still we did stay long and we did massive amount of series kinda contradicts with your thesis right wink?
And it's kinda absurd to say stuff without proof, steal work, the lowest quality? LOL!

thread

» Ferozban on April 21st, 2011, 3:45pm

lol you need documented proof that allmost all your works were allready in scanlation by another group? not that it's even necessary but the documented proof lies within the several pages of releases here on MU. with maybe a few exceptions everything was allready done by other just better and slower. and if i may remind you there is this little thing called honor code. what you did is called stealing.

you guys played a big role in making manga scanlation a competition, which it wasnt before. and it shouldnt be.
at least most groups still know that.

and your quality was among the lowest, in both translation and editing. even with saying it's a personal opinion, you can't actually believe it was good. it was far from good. some exceptions may at best have been mediocrite.
shall i show you examples now? i guess thats not worth the effort. just compare franky house work with let's say japflap or pick any other of the 'slower' groups which had the same projects.

and: yes you had many projects. i never said anything contrary. not that it matters anyways.

thread

» thefolenangel on April 22nd, 2011, 2:01am

lol comparing a speedscaner with HQ scaner is just LOL!
But in the speedscaner section of the scanlating world our quality was just fine.
And there is no honor amoung thieves, and I don't think there were only "few exceptions" you will see that we not only did chapters from series that no one else scanlated, but we picked our own series too.

Most of our translations were from cnet and other star MH translators, so I don't know how that's mediocrite, still I don't know Japanese so you may be right.

On the stealing mather check vojo85's opinion he is on the scene for a long time (as I see) and his point is very interesting wink

thread

» Ferozban on April 22nd, 2011, 3:10am

lol, So you don't want to be compared to a high quality scanner so you can downgrade the definition of good? ok lets compare you to the speedscanners. let's see what binktopia and co. were doing back then.
right, even among speedscanner you're work was not good.
but i guess it became useless to talk about it. when we talk about 'good' scanlations a speedscanner should just shut up but you will never acknowledge that the only 'quality' of franky house was speed and nothing but speed.
saying you dont want to be compared to the other groups is just escaping the issue.

well and on the stealing (and quality) matter check out ggpx opinion just 3 comments under this, he is in this scene for a much much longer time wink
i still heard no excuse of you for what we both now said about groups like franky house: (let me qoute). "she was the one who created the model to make scanlations as quick as possible so they could force people to download from sites like MegaUpload & DepositFile and make money from those scanlations.

Now you have a bunch of groups who scanlate as fast as they can with ZERO attention to detail - not to mention accepting dictionary-translators"

so i hope you won't mind that i did not shed a single tear for you're group. wink

Omg, wow, you're such an idiot and a jerk.
I just dropped by to see if there was any discussion going on only to find this shit. I'm not trying to revive the argument but I feel obligated to speak up for my many friends at Franky House.

If you've started reading manga 3 years ago, then you probably don't know that Franky House did do it's share of HQ scanlations in early 2007. I don't remember how they compared to the Japflap of that time but I do remember they were solid quality, better than many HQ groups at that time. Around that time FH didn't deal with speedscans at all.
You say FH started the speedscan race? Bullshit. Before FH even started dealing with speedscans, each week we had at least 4 or 5 releases of WSJ series. How do I remember? Because I was a one man team at that time, doing speedscans myself. And believe me when I tell you, that what you call LQ now is light years ahead of what we've been calling MQ 6 years ago. And though many say LQ is worthless, nobody can take from me the 10000 downloads (from a single server) I got in one day for a few hours of work. It made me feel really happy and appreciated.

What FH did was try to end that stupid speedscan battle. Venicia (our leader) reached out to all those individual scanlators and invited them to create one big group that could split work to produce better results faster. And it worked. It worked only for a year but it did. We did produce more releases more steadily and our quality was improving with each release. We had some great people back then, I made friendships that still last. Of course HQ groups were releasing better scanlations but they were taking weeks to do so, while we were releasing in hours. The only group that competed with us in terms of quality at that time was Binktopia and while I admit they were often coming at the top, they were only releasing the most popular WSJ titles, while we were often releasing as many as 10 chapters per week. And no, there were no better alternatives for Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle, xxxHolic and others (until binktopia picked up xxxHolic 6 months later only to release few chapters and drop it, then pick it again few months afterwards).

Now, that was a great time for FH (late 2007, early 2008) and anyone who says we were releasing crap at that moment clearly doesn't know what he's talking about. And now that's where a problem occured. In 2008 we were at our game, releasing solid MQ at crazy speed. We started getting more trainees, some of them great, some of them not so much. What we lacked was a good release flow. The only person with real power in the group was Venicia. Which means that everyone else was basically equal. We didn't have a clear quality control process, so many trainees went on to release LQ scans without consulting anyone. And while we produced many good scanlations, we started mixing some crap in. We were a big group, it was impossible for one person to have everything in their grasp at all times (even if only for the time difference reasons) but the leader didn't fancy the idea of creating a chain of power. And eventually she ended up in a hospital and left the group without a leader to manage itself. We held onto it for 2 years afterwards, I believe. Longer than I thought will be possible but it wasn't done without some sacrifices. By then most of the original staff was gone, so the group was riding on the backs of enthusiastic newbies. Some of them did a great job, some of them released crappy scans, some of them started forwarding everything to money earning sites (thefolenangel). As far as I remember, work stealing occurred twice. Once sometime early, maybe in 2007, before FH turned speedscans, I wasn't there at the moment and I don't remember what it was about. Second time much later, I believe the perpetrator was again thefolenangel.

It became too long already, so I'll just sum it up. FH is NOT a villain in the scanlating world, who released only crappy scans, stole translations and rushed speedscans battle. FH did it's share of solid scanlating work. Everyone who says different without ever scanlating anything should go and scanlate one chapter from magazine RAW. Now imagine we scanlated 1500 of them. And while there are many groups releasing much higher quality scans, a great majority of them uses volume scans that can't even be compared to magazine scans. The only group I'm aware of who did a similar share of mag scans as FH is Binktopia. They did a great job and they deserve their credit.

GGpX, I respect you as a scanlator but why are you generalizing like that? FH had many great scanlators and few shitty ones. All the stealing that occured (I remember only two cases but if you insist there were more I won't argue) can also be associated with one or two people. I know thefolenangle made a huge mess, I was the first one who tried banning her back in 2008 but I didn't have the power to do so and our leader was not listening.

Please think before you call FH putrid. We did a lot of good work and had a lot of great people. You may throw your harsh words easily but it does hurt to read all these comments after sacrificing literally weeks scanlating for no reward but kind words of people who did enjoy our scans (and believe it or not, there were many of them).

Kitty Wills: And we know that half of the n00b groups won't make it. Gotta wonder if we are entering a dark age for manga. =/

I love how thefollenangel forgot to include how Franky-House stole translations, had no respect towards any other scanlators and she was the one who created the model to make scanlations as quick as possible so they could force people to download from sites like MegaUpload & DepositFile and make money from those scanlations.

Now you have a bunch of groups who scanlate as fast as they can with ZERO attention to detail - not to mention accepting dictionary-translators - so that they can make some money off of the scanlations.

Never let the truth get in the way of a good story, eh thefollenangel.

I'll remember Franky-House as the degradation of the scanlation community; Where the majority of new scanlators learned that it was okay to have no respect for each other, that it was okay to over-scanlate the same series and that even though scanlations are illegal and you're cutting on the American companies' profit, it's okay for you to make a profit even though we're supposed to be doing this as a free hobby.

Forgive me for not having very fond memories of such a putrid group.

*GGpX - there is no honour among thief, we all steal by doing scanlations, so don't lie to the members. Every scanlator is free to scanlate whatever he likes. And this is a fundamental rule of scanlations.
whatever FH stole or did not steal that translation for OP (for which the group was banned from MH - interesting that later was unbanned) is very debatable question. I didn't include because I was not on the scene that year and I have no idea what happened. Some say FH stole it, other that there was just a misunderstanding.
Don't misundestand me I'm telling this story from the prespective not of a member but of a objective spectator. My only desire is to tell why FH fell even thought it could still be running.
*digitalr hell dear DR it's always fun to see you. I still remember how you always talk about doing that and this and never actually do anything. What if I'm banned? Does that make me someone who wasnt there? Do you know why I'm telling this story, and no it's not because I'm carving for attention - it' because I had 4-5 emails asking me what happened to FH.
Oh if you want to tell your side of FH story mail me at thefolenangel[@]gmail.com I'm collecting the pieces from the old team members.

I'm telling this story as a warning for future scanlating groups.

I didn't get into reading scanlated manga until 2009, so by the time I started reading stuff FH was already looking shaky. But I will never ever complain about a group that did work on series that I liked and no one else worked on like Asu No Yoichi and Rosario Vampire.

Regardless of how much you liked or hated FH, what happened to them should be a template for how other groups can avoid a similar fate.

I started with One piece when you can only find it at Null and then there was FH who had a weekly translate? Am i right? I mean i have been reading for this for 6-7 years now tell me what did they do wrong about making a weekly translate? And who stole what from who ? You all know this is illegal so how is one illegal stolen and other legal? You all think too much of some grups and some think too much of FH i think FH did there "illegal" job nicely and i admire how for 2 years they scanned one piece fairly fast. The fact is where they good at there work or did they do it on a wimp like for instance A-Team does with The breaker and other manga? I think they we're good and I'm sorry how things worked out

All that aside, Franky House was/is not dead. And no other external sources shall be believed. If we ever die, that will be clearly highlighted and indicated at our site.

Hey MMMMMM!!! biggrin So glad to see you here! How are you?
I've been worried where I will contact you since I don't get your email. I got on at FH just a few hours ago... Why did it get suspended again? and why on copyright violation? what did they do? I thought that site has been inactive for a long time now with only SB sub-forum on...
By the way M, PM me when you have time. I have news for you if you get the drift hehe. ^_^ Oh, make sure to include your email alright? I got worried on how to contact you since that forum got suspended. I got no emails from our friends there... T_T

This is my first time on B.U. Hi to all of you! ^^ Only, I don't know if what most of you guys say about FH being this and that is really true or not. Yes, I've read folenangel's blog a few months ago, and that's where I found out about the forum's history. I was just happy to read their Skip Beat scans during that era it was mentioned. I never knew that it would come to this state this year. What I can say is that even if I'm only active on their sub-forum there, members there are friendly and not "plastic" if you get what I mean. I'm just glad I made a lot of friends. You can argue but since the issue about FH has been there, let's just move on guys... Be happy that at least even some of us don't get a chance to grab our favorite manga on the stores (which sadly even Bleach isn't here on my home country, not even Skip Beat), groups out there are posting the manga already translated. never mind the quality, I'm just glad I was able to at least read the manga. Instead of complaining, be glad you are able to read a manga because of their efforts. So let's stop arguing guys... it's already in war in middle east biggrin peace and love
