New Poll - Alcohol
I came up with this poll on the fly because I don't like any of the recent suggestions. I also tried tequila for the first time recently for the Lunar New Year.

You can submit poll ideas here
http://www.mangaupdates.com/showtopic.php?tid=3903

Previous Poll Results:
Question: Over the years, has the kind of manga you typically read changed?
Choices:
Now I'm reading more stuff meant for the youth - votes: 219 (5.3%)
Now I'm reading more adult, mature stuff - votes: 1804 (43.3%)
Stayed about the same - votes: 2147 (51.5%)
There were 4170 total votes.
The poll ended: February 9th 2019

For those who changed, it totally makes sense that you lean more toward the mature topics as you get older.

Mostly On rare, special occasions these days for the purpose of socializing and only if I got close friends/colleagues to share the moment with.
I never drink alone, though I have a decent tolerance to it, I'm not much into it.

I'm in the exact same boat as MinatoAce. I dislike alcohol, but I handle it just fine. I wouldn't exactly call it peer-pressure because no one ever tries coercing me, but I drink at occasions where it might seem socially inappropriate to not drink, like when champagne is being poured out for new year's.

Never. Never even tried it, actually. Women don't really drink where I come from (well, the highest of the upper class and the lowest of the lower class do, but I'm middle class, so...) And even if they did, I wouldn't be interested; waste of money and time, imho.

Never drink alcohol, smoke or using any kind of drug mmm...

» dreamer00013 on February 9th, 2019, 5:41am

Sugar is my only addiction 😉 people around me drink, so it's highly unusual for them when I don't follow along. But I don't like the taste and I've got some personal reasons as well to not even start with that shit. As in, ever.

Never. Just never liked the state of it.

Never. I can't drink with my epilepsy meds and was diagnosed when I was thirteen, so I've never even tried alcohol.

I went for once a month but it's more once every few months, and it's casual. Long gone are the days of drinking to actually get drunk for the night.
Sometimes I'll drink a pint while watching football or something.

Drinking: Never. As a child (like, 6-ish years old), I ate one of my grandma's brandy pralines. Made me throw up like a damn fountain. Poor trash can. That probably killed drinking alcohol for me. I DO ingest alcohol when used in tiramisu and rum balls, though. My money is better spent on manga and figurines.

It would be good to include if one is on legal drinking age.

thread

» Natsuki@ on February 9th, 2019, 1:09pm

Well that age limit is only handy if the kids are supervised my little brother got a taste of beer as a 2 year old kid and when there had been a party at our babysitter he drunk the leftovers of that the day later. When I was a kid I've had some wine at bbq with my parents before I was 16. Now they have changed the laws and alcohol is only allowed for 18 year olds.

I can drink but rarely do so I do not hate the taste and some that I used to hate like red wine I can now appreciate a bit more but I just see it as a waste of money. Overal I just have problems with losing control and alcohol is something that is also addictive so I only drink in very moderate amounts and stop drinking when I find I've had enough.

thread

» Nekore on February 9th, 2019, 4:29pm

It's about likelihood (and of course shouldn't include accidental intake), if you're 16 there's a higher chance that you have never drinked that if you're 26. Still laws are different, if in the US it's illegal for minors to drink where I live it's only illegal to sell to minors so independently of how did you get it there's no problem with drinking it (of course as long as it's not in public).

On rare, special occasions. We had a party in my apartment this week, so I drunk rum a few days ago. The bottle will now likely sit around till someone else drinks it dry.
I only drink hard alcohol. Beer tastes like total shit. Wine ain´t great either, despite being good for your health in moderation. 30%+ stuff at least burns and has an effect. I have a strong tolerance for alcohol btw. I can drink about 0,7 liter of vodka till my body shuts down. My Russian grandfather though, ho boi. He could drink that stuff, on a near daily basis, like it was water. That´s what the Soviet Union will do to you. He and my beer loving stepfather are among the reasons I barely touch alcohol.

@Nekore People who are into alcohol don´t start drinking with 16 (the legal age for soft alcohol over here), 18 or 21. I had my first taste in elementary school and my first smoke in kindergarten, due to being barely supervised. That´s how I learned that both are not for me.
I even dislike pot. What a boring adult I am.

thread

» Nekore on February 9th, 2019, 4:36pm

I can't say I dislike pot as I've never tried it but I'm just not interested on altering my consciousness,as I've said above it's just about likelihood, of course many minors have drunk on some occacions with family (also it could separate special occasions with more regular meetings).

You know what happens if you smoke regular marihuana? Basically nothing. Half the joint is first of all filled or stretched with tobacco. The whole thing has to keep slowly building somehow. The end result is thus a smoky lung/mouth and a light headache if you commit to deeply inhaling that shit. My legs also felt a bit asleep once. What an effect. Inhaling the smoke is lastly bad news bears if you mess up even slightly... and will.

I am fully convinced that smoking a single joint leads to nothing, as the same people who claimed that also managed to get drunk of beer. An altered strain of cannabis or a pure root from the jungle (HBO Vice had a good episode on that) may be different of course but who has access to that? Get VR glasses if you want to mess with your brain.

Actually, they've been finding out that pot can cause anxiety disorder, brain damage, decreases reaction time, causes one to lose their indepedence, and increases your sperm count at the risk of making you sterile. Also, the stuff out on the market today is much more potent than the stuff from years ago.

all my friends drink way too much or are stoned all the time
the ones that don't, are trapped in different prisons where they won't eat carbs and are exercising twice a day
their lives tho

I drink and I can hold my alcohol pretty well..
But I only drink to socialize.. When my friends invite me to drink I come (but only maybe once a month)
Honestly I don't like the taste of alcohol
But I'm the strongest drinker among my peers (cause I don't want to lose... 😤😤😤)

I swore off drinking the day I saw one of my friends get drunk and start laughing and crying at the same time like some goddamn lunatic. He was having some trouble with his girlfriend at the time.
It was seriously disturbing, I remember it every time someone offers me a drink or talks about drinking in general.

I'm 30 and never had a sip of alcohol in my life. Not because I'm religious or anything but the smell of it just really turns me off so I never cared to try it.

thread

On rare occasions. I don't particularly like alcohol, but if it's free or to socialize, sure.

thread

» MangaGhost on February 10th, 2019, 6:40pm

Only on the holidays and usually wine with the rare hard liquor. Don't like most beer as it tastes like crap.

Alcohol was never some kind of taboo or super restricted thing growing up in my family, so it wasn't some kind of forbidden thing that would make you feel like you were missing out or encourage someone to sneak a drink. If everyone in your family has a sip during a toast over the holidays then alcohol is no big deal and no reason to crave the forbidden. I also saw many of the bad effects on friends who succumbed to peer pressure or got a taste for it growing up. Plus I never needed it to have fun.

Once a week.
Well, more like sober for ~a month, then constantly drunk crying alone in my room for the week after every exam season. I have two 3-hour midterms tomorrow too. I hate university. 😐

There should be a answer for us sober alcoholics. I used to drink everyday up until 2 years ago

thread

» HikaruYami on February 11th, 2019, 1:34pm

If you've gone cold turkey it sounds like the answer is "never"? So you can just proudly answer "never"?

thread

» brutelord on February 12th, 2019, 2:43pm

I did vote that, but I never for a second forget that there'd be no going back from one drink. It's why I still call myself an alcoholic even though I've been sober for over 2 years.

Thankfully, I don't think about drinking everyday anymore. It's more like once a week/month. Never drinking and being a sober alcoholic are pretty different things is what I was trying to say

thread

» HikaruYami on February 13th, 2019, 10:08am

But that's the thing, they're not different, because this poll is only interested in the now. There are a TON more options in the vague realm of "including the past". In fact, "I had a drink once twenty years ago" wouldn't even fit under "never" if you had your way with such abstract options.

lambchopsil has sometimes complained about running out of poll ideas, maybe you can go to the thread and suggest a new one.

"What's the heaviest a drinker you've ever been?"

Some possible selections for you to provide:
"I've never had alcohol in my life"

"I tried it once and don't like it"

"I've engaged in periodic social drinking"

"I drank a lot in college"

"I used to be an alcoholic but have recovered"

"I am still an alcoholic"

Happy and surprised to see many dry people.

thread

» blackkittycat15 on February 13th, 2019, 12:06pm

I'm surprised but it's never happy. How do you invite out dry people? You can't hit a bar up with them and I have no idea how to go out for a few hours and only spend $10. Food is more expensive and people are not always hungry.

thread

» dreamer00013 on February 14th, 2019, 6:14pm

there are great alcohol-free cocktails 🙂 Just choose a bar with some options!

» orochijes on February 17th, 2019, 2:07am

I would just order water in that situation.

» 狂気 on February 12th, 2019, 5:21am

Should have an option for "Never because I am under-aged". As for myself, I do have a drink on occasion. Like when the sun goes down... But yeah, there are maybe couple days a month I don't have a drink. Can't remember the last time I was drunk though.

thread

» Jyeims on February 14th, 2019, 6:03pm

I drink beer mostly everyday, but on special occasions we usually drink pinga(I really have no idea if this thing has a name in english), make a drink with it like caipirinha or veeeery rarely wine.
