This is just getting more and more depressing. Is it just me that's worried about the future of manga scanlations?

You're not alone bro

thread

» calstine on December 17th, 2011, 3:06am

I've never read any of their series, but this really is worrisome; so many groups are folding and new ones aren't jumping at the chance to replace 'em like they used to. Looks like I'd better start learning Japanese...

thread

» T1 on December 17th, 2011, 3:45am

Already ahead of ya.

When I saw the attitude of leechers who expect you to deliver cuz it's their right and mangafox earning money on the author's work, I knew it was time to close my group (still need to release the last part) and I decided to take japanese seriously.

It just wasn't worth it anymore.

The sad part about it is that people can't get that the scanlation community needs more people in their groups. Not new groups which they so happy makes and kills in a few weeks, but more people on the old groups to make the stuff running.

Also that many people using external mangareaders like mangafox and mangahere won't know when the groups need people cuz they don't visit the groups site and no one really reads the credit page, right? ....and then it becomes too late. XD

It may take me a while to overcome my abhorrence of proprietary software such as photo shop. Also, I still have some time before my Japanese is at a level where I can translate easily, but expect me. I'm sure there are other people who are also waiting till their Japanese reaches a higher level of fluency. So think of it more as a trough, than a slope.

thread

» T1 on December 17th, 2011, 7:55am

well photoshop is kinda a must...these days actions helps a great deal.

japanese...well I started cuz of the same reason, these days it's more for myself than translating stuff for idiots wink

thread

» Xeronia on December 17th, 2011, 6:24pm

Try the GIMP instead. It does quite a bit of what Photoshop does and is free.

thread

» thevampirate on December 17th, 2011, 4:41am

for every one that goes a new one takes its place. scans aren't really stopping and groups who arent super fast end up dieing out.

thread

*check for update on dead projects
maybe in some far far away place call non-existence,
some example of project: hammer session, Kimera, and some others(sure t1 can come up with a better list than me)

thread

» T1 on December 17th, 2011, 7:57am

Of course I can, I think I released a wishlist on stuff that should get scanlated to be finished (no not the great titles that got lost and the new great titles that never got scanlated)
Luckily people got an attention to it...well they would if they read our scanlations but it resulted in many getting picked up...but 40% are still lost. I think that was our xmas release 2 years ago? O.o

thread

» T1 on December 17th, 2011, 7:58am

Errr....dude...or dudess....the problem is that most new group picks up new projects. Otherwise I dunno where you look, lol.

thread

» VawX on December 17th, 2011, 4:26am

just as one of the comment in the forum, is it not possible for the other staff of the member lead the Mangacurse, at least until theslasher done with his study mmm...
it's very sad to think that a group as big as Mangacurse is closing its door because of one person's decision mmm...

thread

» Anaelyssa on December 17th, 2011, 4:32am

Personally, the only thing I ever tried reading from Mangacurse was The Breaker: New Waves. The quality of their scans (judging by that) wasn't that good. Now maybe they'd improved since then, I don't know...
Well, I guess it is sad in general to see a group close down. But sometimes, no scans is better than bad (and possibly badly translated) scans.

thread

» Yousuke on December 17th, 2011, 6:11am

Truthfully I was incredibly annoyed by their scans awhile back. The broken English was very dissatisfying. How difficult could it be to let someone with decent English skills proofread their scanlations? All the more annoying since they scanlated several of series that I like.
HOWEVER. They have improved a notch since then. To the point where it was readable.

thread

» deadphoenix on December 17th, 2011, 6:13am

This becomes a problem, and it all started with those online readers that popped up some years ago, this time it's another reason but I guess the economical crisis also plays it's part, as most people don't have so much time as in the past, as everyone needs to work harder and longer because of this.

The only thing what we can hope that it's a temporary shut down, as it's a matter of time maybe they could come back after some time...

At least I'm really thankful for the early breaker releases and that they took some time to do King of Hell (one of my favorite manwha's that disappeared suddenly some time ago.)

thread

» archknight on December 17th, 2011, 6:28am

not really economical when it is due to lack of people to help on a series

thread

» Panda on December 17th, 2011, 7:13am

I don't necessarily agree with this statement, but what chomio is trying to say is that because of the economic crisis, people are more likely to be working than they are to be spending their time freely. Less free time means fewer people willing to work on scanlations.

thread

» archknight on December 17th, 2011, 7:54am

"you make it sound like most people working in scanlation are working class folks,"
I didnt write that but that what someone would think of your comment

thread

» archknight on December 17th, 2011, 10:46am

it not like I am saying the economic issue doesn't affect scanlation. It does of course affect scanlation but it not enough to completely shut down groups. There are still a ton of people everywhere surfing the internet, that wont change unless population actually decreases.

It really about the number of user on internet rather than ones who have to spend more time working

thread

» dosetsu on December 17th, 2011, 11:44am

Uh-huh, you keep on believing that.

thread

» T1 on December 17th, 2011, 1:12pm

Uh-huh... Wait is that real life experience? Was that the reason for closing your group? People didn't donate anymore money? embarrassed
Again it comes down to money eh? Money runs the world...Imma gonna open a new mangafox biggrin

thread

» dosetsu on December 17th, 2011, 3:28pm

Uh, what? I've never been one to accept donations and I'm pretty sure if and when my “group” does close (It hasn't), it'll be because of my declining interest in manga.

thread

» T1 on December 18th, 2011, 3:30am

Oh cool I thought it did...so when will we get Lovesickness Freaks without watermarks cuz they were going to be used in scanlation but I never saw anything? embarrassed I liked that story <3

I apologize the donation part, I know better than putting stereotypes onto others. I figured that we were kinda the very few left who didn't want people's money cuz what we did was for free....oh wait we wanted people to help out with scanlating and give their thanks. Yes, I'm a shallow dude.

thread

» PROzess on December 19th, 2011, 9:52am

Groups close because nobody cares about the workers anymore.
There's so much a single person (leader of the group) can handle alone.
I closed my group because leecher (why does everyone think that's a negative term? It surely isn't...) annoyed me and they weren't worth the effort anymore.
My love for manga hasn't died down the least, nor will it for any time. But my motivation to share my work (now only translations) with the masses decreases day by day.
People complain about groups accepting donations (which are needed for raws [I don't agree with server cost, because you can actually host a whole group for free, like I did]), but on the other hand they're going to read on Mangafox, the one instance who makes the biggest profit in the community-.-

thread

» T1 on December 19th, 2011, 10:50am

yes, I agree...but!
leecher = annoying idiots who only dls and runs away after trolling you
reader = someone who enjoys your stuff and sometimes say thanks

thread

» PROzess on December 19th, 2011, 11:08am

well, the community exists 80% out of leechers.....
I like to differentiate into leecher (DL and run) and Fans (DL and say thanks). Reader are we all in the community, but we additionally divide then into Scanlator, Leecher and Fans.
I don't mind if they just come to Dl and leave as long as they keep their mouth shut. But if they start complain..... GNAR

thread

» T1 on December 19th, 2011, 11:51am

Ya, I agree but sometimes when you only got leechers, you'd like a thank once pr.....month, right? Just from one person xD

Btw...I don't mind them dl & run either, it's the uploading to places you don't want them to that annoys

I was just pointing an example out. As someone who takes part in scanlation with multiple groups and is a student, I know the average age of them is around 16-24. i would say there more student doing scanlation than there are for people with career/out of school. Like sure the people with work tend to stay longer than students but there are way more student always wishing to take part in scanlation

thread

» dosetsu on December 18th, 2011, 11:57pm

Uh-huh, you keep on believing that.

thread

» PROzess on December 19th, 2011, 10:03am

Let me join the bashing smile
I wouldn't say that it's mainly consists of students.
It's just your biased opinion.
Though it's true that a lot of student join the community to help, they just as quick quit the scene again.
While the working force actually stays in business. They're by far more reliable than the most students. Of course there are exceptions in both cases.
So to take down your personal view of groups, I hold my own opinion against, where I see that the majority of members are from the working force.
have a good day~

thread

» T1 on December 19th, 2011, 10:43am

uh-huh 2+ groups!

You student! I student!

If you look at my group, yes students do leave but maaaaan the workers do the same shit! The ones who stay more than others are the students. Yes you get busy and they disappear when they get exams but they always come back. I can't say that with the working class, sadly.

I rather go trust a female student since I know she got the discipline to keep up with the work I give her than the male worker any time and any place, and it's not only cuz I'm biased towards girls. I've just worked in too many groups to know how people act and who you can trust.

thread

» PROzess on December 19th, 2011, 11:11am

I only trust people who proved to be reliable over a certain time period.
Be it student, worker or housewife, I don't care.
The dedication you put in matters, and if it's just 2 hours per week. If it are constant 2 hours with good result, I totally prefer that over someone who provides crap, takes forever and disappears sometimes, but comes online twice a day (to just idle away anyway-.-)

thread

» T1 on December 19th, 2011, 11:47am

Indeed, I totally agree.

thread

» T1 on December 17th, 2011, 8:02am

Nah, this has only affected the buying people. Oh wait, you may be right....maybe that's the reason why people think our releases are their rights and they can demand from them....oh and mangafox earning money on the author's work instead of the author earning money on her work is fine...true the finance crises has put its huge greedy pawn on scanlations even!

thread

» LeeChamFun on December 17th, 2011, 6:52am

Well, his case would be personal interest, some others' would be online reader & their cursed uploaders who uploads the moment a group release their work.
At the end of the day, it boils down to the reader's attitude. They can thank the online reader all they want, but it's not the online reader that brings them their manga/ manhwa, but the groups who did it.
If they don't support the group, how can they even expect the groups to want to do anything at all?

thread

» T1 on December 17th, 2011, 8:03am

Heard, heard! Now if you were over here I'd give ya a beer!

thread

» yennyenn on December 17th, 2011, 11:22am

It's all because of those new groups!! When their projects are snatched, it must be frustrating. Not that they own the series, but isn't there any rules in this scanlating industry!?

It's saddening to see them closing!! They did a good job in scanning nurarihyon no mago!
All the best for your studies! Leader!

thread

Regarding project snatching, Mangacurse is doing the same to those slower releasing groups, mind you.

I'm more worried about the groups that work on seinen mangas. They are really scarce since translating those is a lot of work and when one group closes there is no quick replacement (or none at all)

Look at Hobo-1, he (or she) was doing an awesome work but now it seems to have stopped with no substitute in view.

thread

» T1 on December 18th, 2011, 3:34am

I dun think hobo is dead if he stopped then I wouldn't care since I'm not into NTR stuff, sorry. bigrazz

Still I get what you mean and it's much more true for seinen groups than shounen groups. This is one of the things most people reading manga don't get...the line between manga with furi or without furi^^

thread

» PROzess on December 19th, 2011, 9:55am

All releases from Hobo vanished from the torrent tracker.
And since it's for a while now, without any statement, I's sure we can conclude it wasn't a technical problem, but a closure.

thread

» T1 on December 19th, 2011, 10:29am

thread

» MewMan on December 17th, 2011, 9:15pm

it just means we are going back to the root of scanlation
everyone does what they like, share when they want, and we are happy that they do
(i prefer high quality volume scan to weekly releases anyway ==)

thread

» PROzess on December 19th, 2011, 10:00am

While sure it's sad that another Group is closing down, I don't really care in this case.
I mean, look at the history of Mangacurse: Project stealing everywhere, and with bad quality on top of that. At least do a decent job if you steal-.-
No matter how much their Quality increased, the hate for them will stay. I'm speaking from experience here. The majority hates me for various reasons too and it doesnt matter how good of a scan I provide.
So the downfall of Mangacurse is like the death of Kim Jong Il. A fellow human died, but since he was an asshole, everyone's happy that he's gone.

thread

» T1 on December 19th, 2011, 10:33am

Well the leechers don't care...they got fast "translated" releases and that was enough for them. Which made me get a great idea I will try out after I finished biggrin Told arch and shax about it and they laughed so it must be an interesting idea to try out and see what people do about it.

Anyway you westernized dude...how can you say that he was an asshole? Dude had lots of love for american movies bigrazz Not everyone is happy...I don't give a damn about it...too many humans die for me to care..and this wasn't even a chick. wink

It seems more like they are hanging to thin straws if you ask me; the members 'coming back' are not many (especially considering [g]MangaCurse[/g]'s former size), and the translators are even fewer. Hell, they can't even control or apparently access the forum. The leader, Slash, just left them high and dry. His closing statement wasn't anything that he put passion or seriousness to (compared to Shi-Ki's TheOne, for example).

The end is nigh.
