Baka-Updates hacked ...
From Baka-Updates.com:

MangaUpdates was not hacked. Baka-Updates, our sister site, was hacked. However, if you use the same password on BU as on MU, you should read this:

I have some sad news to tell everyone. Today the Baka-Updates site was hacked by some guy who calls himself YaQJoo. He was able to get the full list of names along with passwords and email addresses. For your safety, please change your passwords on the website and your email account IF YOU USE THE SAME PASSWORD.

In the meantime, we are working on securing the site to make sure this does not happen again. Several pages and site functions will be unavailable for the time being

Also:
If you got an email from the hacker, it is safe to open, as far as we have found. It only contains a message of gloats...Basically, he hijacked the forum and made himself an admin, enabling him to use the BU admin mass email system.

Edit:
Due to recent events, we decided to upgrade password security over at MU. However, we apparently forgot to edit the password scheme for the confirmation of the old password, which isn't compatible with the new one...Which means that you can't change your passwords for MU! >_>
Manick's asleep right now, so you guys have to wait half a day or so

Edit 2:
The confirmation has been fixed, you should be able to change your passwords now.

thanks for the quick reaction to the incident

although i can't even fathom why anyone would want to hack a DATABASE site instead of directly attacking a fan-subbing website (not that i want them to)

thread

» Curium on November 17th, 2008, 7:10pm

well if he decided to attack fansubbing by attacking those that support it....

The same reason idiots hack anything. To mess with people and make themselves feel like less of a loser. Same with people who make viruses, I mean, WTF, right? The whole point of hacking games and sites is to ruin the fun for everyone else cause their life sux.

thread

» jijiey on November 18th, 2008, 6:55am

hey.. people from antivirus developer too make viruses its just they no spread it like some idiot who think this is fun stuff. Let some ppl hack his account and let them feel how to hacked by someone. Geez...

thread

» Cerulean on November 18th, 2008, 7:12am

i doubt he's such an idiot or else he wouldn't be able to hack into the site in the first place...judging by the content of their email "F*** YOU ADMIN", i think the hacker was banned or chastised badly in the forum...it's still a very childish and immature reaction, though...smart guy with a bad attitude...

thread

» LinkMcCloud on November 18th, 2008, 10:17am

The point is it's dumb. If you've ever seen the show Big Bang Theory, you'd know that just cause they're smart enough to make a virus or what ever doesn't change the fact that they're complete idiots. The reason he was banned or whatever was probably because of his own stupidity and/or immaturity.

I got an email from that guy. I didn't open it cuz I heard there was an email going around with some virus that didn't have a patch yet so I figured that's what it was. Did anybody else get the email and open it?

thread

» Crisn on November 17th, 2008, 11:47pm

I dont think you can get a virus just for opening an email. In order for that to happen, I believe you must open the file attached to the email. what you read is probably not an exe file. and yes, i saw the email, no harm.

well, as it said, the databased that was hacked included usernames, password, and most importantly emails. not everyone changes their password for every different thing they register to. this means a huge security issue for everyone on that database

thread

» silverado on November 17th, 2008, 9:02pm

lol, I heard that you cant change the passwords on mangaupdates.com because it says your pw doesn't match with the system entry although it's exactly the same password. did anybody mess up this database as well?

I tried to change my password but it was changed from the original.

I edited the news post to include information about this

Good thing I changed the password for MU right away when I saw the news. Another good thing is I have a different password for my email. I rarely ever used my email's pw for other site's pw. I tend to have different random pw for sites I register. I can't never remember them all but I'm too paranoid to put the same pw for every sites I register. So I to have to write all the pw down in a list so I can check.

Good luck with securing the sites. Hope nothing serious happens.

I seriously hope the passwords were at least hashed, pref with some delicious salt...

really would like to know though... ~_~

thread

They originally were, don't worry. It's just a precaution. And yes, we got the salt, the md5, the sha1, the whole bootie

LOL
so our password is not encrypted? ^^;;
I was wondering why you guys suddenly disappeared.this morning. I thought it was some kind of sudden maintenance....

thread

» lambchopsil on November 18th, 2008, 11:27am

Actually all the BU and MU forum passwords were hashed already. It's just a precaution to ask you to change your password.

» Cloud8521 on November 18th, 2008, 2:03pm

thread

» xxxxsharpie on November 19th, 2008, 4:12am

Thanks for the fast reaction although I don't have a BU account. Nice to know you guys are working hard. Although I still can't understand why idiots would want to hack a website.
