Usually I'd say half empty but it really depends on how thirsty I am...

It depends
If someone has been drinking out of it - half empty
If liquid was added - half full
If I walk in the room and see it with no context - half a glass of water

Yeah, I came here to say the same thing as lollylopmr, there's no reason for the question to be about opinions at all, it depends on whether the glass was emptied to that level or filled to it.

It's similar to "which came first, the chicken or the egg?", there's only room for disagreement because we aren't given enough information. Does "egg" mean any egg, an egg containing a chicken, or an egg laid by a chicken? If it's the first two then it's the egg, if it's the latter it's the chicken.

Okay, I'm certain I've answered this before, on this website. How long ago was that?

It has been asked before, but some time ago… 2010!

So it is... how did I miss that? It seems my memory just isn't that good.

Half empty. But that's since I always fill glasses to the top, so if half is gone, I must have drunk some. Honestly though, I never think of it as a half full/empty glass or even half a glass... It's just 'some water'.

Half empty because you are drinking it until it is empty... right?

It's interesting. No one ever thinks about a glass as half empty. No one. Your concern when looking at a cup is the liquid, not the glass. You want to know how much you have; how much is left to drink. So, it's ALWAYS half full.

But when asked to think about this question, because it turns people around and asks them to think from the perspective of the glass, they make up an answer that makes them feel good in that moment. Then they assign reason to this answer - post hoc. So, of course, the answer is always made up BS. You never think about the glass, so it's always half full.

I hate it when waiters fill up my glass and it was 60% full already

It is about that, but only people with some witty comments showed up and actually wrote something instead of just voting

I don't believe anyone would unironically use the term "half-empty".

It is a metaphor for "I am a pessimistic person", it is not about phrase usage...there are a lot of pessimists out there...

This is the scientist's answer, the engineer's answer is that the glass is twice as big as it needs to be
