Never really understood "possession" of rights to translation Manga . Maybe it's just me ?_?

*translate

back in the day, it was an unwritten code not to steal someone else's series. the only exception to this was some of the jump manga (and it happened around the same time as speed scans). there were huge fights on IRC channels for stealing series and such (also whether or not claiming before releasing counts). if you dont understand that just consider it a matter of politeness.

Groups that care of nothing more than getting releases out the door, quality-be-damned, notwithstanding, there's actual costs involved in scanlation, and a lot of hard work and time put in. Put yourself in the scanlator's shoes: You buy a book because you really love a particular series, then take the time to find staff, scan it, and get it translated and edited, all the while paying careful attention to quality. Then your group is disbanded. Would you rather see the series you poured time and money into go to some group that might, or might not, give a crap about finishing the series with the same standards of quality you hold?

I know for a fact that's the case with Pure. Pure cared about quality, and actually purchased/scanned all their raws. When the group disbanded, the projects were handed off to people the staff knew could continue in the same vein, and said raws (and any in-progress artwork files) were transferred accordingly.

So the "it's mine" issue, in this case, is about allowing someone who put time and money into something to actually see the project finished to (satisfactory) fruition.

It isn't even so much as that. All it is someone giving information on what's happening--no, scratch that, it's giving information on who said they would continue the projects after he let them go. That's all it is, nothing more, nothing less.

thread

» CatzCradle on September 27th, 2010, 7:51pm

not to mention, they also had a lot of joints with other groups.

I used to scanlate for AlaAtra Scans, so i know how it is (Most of us didnt scan our own raws however i imported all of the RAWs of the series I worked on (didn't scan it though). On the other hand in my original post i was referring to the old days where groups would claim stuff and everything was on IRC (i wasn't scanlating back then), i dont know how it was for the shojou community but i expect it was somewhat similar. it's sad to see that a lot of the HQ scanlators are dieing out while the speedscans get more and more popular.

please note mangaupdates just copied/pasted off their blog.

I will be sad to see a great scanlation group leave MU ;_;

thread

» monkeyvoodoo on September 27th, 2010, 7:08pm

For the record, Opposed is fully staffed, and is not looking for any help with Ore no Imouto.

thread

» Drakron on September 27th, 2010, 7:33pm

That I now have to drop due to theirs "no mirror, IRC download only" policy.

thread

» monkeyvoodoo on September 27th, 2010, 7:34pm

"Drop" in what sense?

thread

» dosetsu on September 27th, 2010, 7:46pm

Drakron, no one cares.

thread

» Name-Undecided on September 28th, 2010, 5:00am

Hmm. If a group releases a series...but no one can get it, does it still count as released?

thread

» Panda on September 28th, 2010, 6:11am

Dunno, considering a good chunk of people can get it just fine. Plus, fairly certain MU accepts releases that are friends-only for livejournals and forum members only for those groups that use forums.

thread

» Toto on September 28th, 2010, 6:11am

If no one can really get it, then no... but if people just need to work for it (sign up for their website/forum/whatever as long as it's the scanlator's and not a third party site, make X amount of posts, learn IRC/ftp) yet are too lazy to, then yes.

thread

» m64 on September 28th, 2010, 10:49am

learn IRC...

thread

» dosetsu on September 28th, 2010, 11:36am

If no one can get it, it isn't "released."

Was that a serious question or are you just stupid/a bad troll?

thread

» Name-Undecided on September 28th, 2010, 3:57pm

It's a serious question. Not related to Opposed though, I'm just talking about those releases that require jumping through 20,000 hoops to get.

thread

» m64 on September 28th, 2010, 7:39pm

you answered your own question... if you can get to it it's released.

thread

» Geese1 on September 27th, 2010, 8:10pm

I was on Opposed's IRC channel and they had a message stating they weren't picking Ore no Imouto.

So, are they or aren't they?

thread

» Panda on September 27th, 2010, 8:17pm

Opposed is much less a scanlation group as it is a collection of very skilled scanlators. Monkeyvoodoo intends to release Ore, but that doesn't necessarily mean the group as a whole does.

thread

» Pikapu on September 27th, 2010, 8:01pm

So... what exactly does "conflict of opinion" mean? (not that I have read any of their series though... just wondering)

thread

» monkeyvoodoo on September 27th, 2010, 8:20pm

It means there were multiple conflicting opinions.

thread

» Panda on September 27th, 2010, 8:24pm

Something like that.

thread

» Pikapu on September 27th, 2010, 8:25pm

Hahaha, so a nicer and more polite way of saying that? bigrazz

thread

» JustPassingBy on September 28th, 2010, 4:05am

not to be insulting, but why is something like this in the news?
small groups open up and close down all the time...
will mangaupdates start tracking all of them now...? embarrassed

thread

» Name-Undecided on September 28th, 2010, 5:02am

It technically counts as scanlation news, and some people do care about it. Mangaupdates posts this kind of news all the time.

thread

» crazy_horse1989 on September 28th, 2010, 8:56am

So you only care about big groups, the titans of scanlations? And why not track them all? I follow a considerable amount of small, dedicated groups and their releases and I do care about them closing down. So, bottom line, yeah, something like this should be in the news.

thread

» JustPassingBy on September 28th, 2010, 2:21pm

Nah, I was just wondering because I never saw any news of this before.

Plus, with picking up close to a dozen series,
making not even 4 releases for each of the series on average,
is not something you can refer to as being "dedicated".

thread

» Guolker on September 28th, 2010, 10:16am

It seems that China Girl is dropped, 'cause it isn't in the list of Opposed.

thread

» monkeyvoodoo on September 28th, 2010, 11:12am

You should look a little harder. Chapter 3 was released yesterday. It's being completed by Opposed.

thread

» Guolker on September 30th, 2010, 3:43pm

Although in the list given by Pure Scans appears this series, the one at the top of this thread doesn't state it. I'll try to get the chap, thank you.

thread

» Wargumm1i on September 28th, 2010, 8:03pm

Its so stupid that people cant get it into there head that they dont own the series. Anyone and anything can translate it. And im not talking about legal rights or politics crap. Im talking about conflicts between scan groups about stuff.

thread

» CatzCradle on September 28th, 2010, 8:08pm

I think it was because they were already working/preparing the joints before Pure Scans broke apart so they were just passing their raws to them.

thread

» Panda on September 28th, 2010, 9:51pm

Yes, this is correct. Other groups should feel free to waste time as necessary.

thread

» adjani on October 18th, 2010, 11:28pm

Are the publishers winning the war... i wonder on balance are the more groups or less groups these days.. SIGH.. another few groups going down.. *waah* thanks for everything you guys!
