Osamu Tezuka’s vaunted storytelling genius, consummate skill at visual expression, and warm humanity blossom fully in his epic of Siddhartha’s life and times. Osamu Tezuka’s vaunted storytelling genius, consummate skill at visual expression, and warm humanity blossom fully in his epic of Siddhartha’s life and times. Tezuka evidences his profound grasp of the subject by contextualizing the Buddha’s ideas; the emphasis is on movement, action, emotion, and conflict as the prince Siddhartha runs away from home, travels across India, and questions Hindu practices such as ascetic self-mutilation and caste oppression. Rather than recommend resignation and impassivity, Tezuka’s Buddha predicates enlightenment upon recognizing the interconnectedness of life, having compassion for the suffering, and ordering one’s life sensibly. Philosophical segments are threaded into interpersonal situations with ground-breaking visual dynamism by an artist who makes sure never to lose his readers’ attention.
Tezuka himself was a humanist rather than a Buddhist, and his magnum opus is not an attempt at propaganda. Hermann Hesse’s novel or Bertolucci’s film is comparable in this regard; in fact, Tezuka’s approach is slightly irreverent in that it incorporates something that Western commentators often eschew, namely, humor.
Note: Won the Bungei Shunju Manga Award in 1975. Won the Eisner Award for Best U.S. Edition of International Material in 2004 and 2005. Less...

some problems i see with this manga
1.it does not follow buddha all that much...
2.it does not follow the actual story of buddha[that is considered to be true] all that much
3.the gods play a large role in it...buddha does not even get enlighted on his own...the gods just make him that way
4.it goes from very mythological/fantastic about the more mythological side of the buddha to in the next chapter be a more "human" buddha
5.buddha is basically a normal human in the story that even after he becomes enlightened acts just as stupid as he have allways done/xpt when the gods want him to do something else
i dont really like the cross between myth and the more human version of buddha
and i dont like the fact that gods are basically making all the things happen
also the reason why this manga is good i feel is becouse the mythological parts of buddhism is great and have allways been great
it is mostly all the other things and tezukas own plots that make it a bit...odd
but it is...still entertaining
you dont really want to put the manga down

I was interested in Buddhism for a long time now, but this manga really helped me understand some basic principles well. It is a masterpiece, even though the graphics are childish, but really, do we read manga only for drawings? Nope, we read it to have a good time, fun and maybe educate ourselves in many more ways with fun. This manga has this feeling of openness, dream and fate. Must read I say.
Amazed by its greatness

This series forever changed the way I look at the world. I'm still a faithless person, but it gave me some courage and hope. I especially admire the way Osamu Tezuka tells Buddha's story, the art, and the storytelling. If you like graphic novels with real depth, you will love this series.

This is, like all of Osamu Tezuka's works, amazing! The intricacy of how he weaves together the lives of tons of charachters is amazing! It really puts through Buddha's message that all living things are connected. There are probably at least 20 charachters that we meet, learn about, and who eventually meet Buddha. The artwork, like always, is stunning, and this series in particular has many amazing shots of scenery. This series is awesome!
