I have no clue what makes this manga a good read...most of the time it leaves me with the good old- "WTF?!" And yet, I am still looking forward to the new chapters. Read it, you'll like it.

Psychological

Author shows his understanding of human psychology by fascinating depictions and the artwork compliments it. It keeps you interested most of the time because of the unique stuff in the manga.

The only two complaints I have, Firstly, he has wasted panels at places to create unnecessary stress and secondly the ending sucked. It wasn't as though the ending was badly made but it was unhappy and disturbing and there were better and more realistic options but he went for this one to create impact and an atypical ending. Nonetheless, it was worth the read

Do not be put off by the twisted sex. This manga has a great premise--guy develops the ability to "see" the suppressed fears of others. Only, they are also his own suppressed fears, because hey, any Buddhist can tell you that everything, even your own personality is an illusion. Can not wait to see where this one goes. Like "Pulp Fiction" this series proves that metaphysics can be fun.

I love mangas and I feel that they are better than anime in many ways, but it is easier to watch rather than read, obviously. I would say that the atmosphere in anime is better, but manga many times draw me in. Now why I said that.. it has been a really long time since a manga made me read nonstop from beginning to the end. It is so rare to find manga's and I started reading after a guy suggested it. But I literally started reading it today (Well kind of yesterday since it is 2am now that I am posting, but you know what I mean) and finished it. I am not sure how I could describe it... truthfully with this manga 1 picture can result with 1000 words. I highly suggest it to everyone, at least up to the point he starts seeing things.

A lot of scenes and moments are disturbing, so if you are a closed mind person I suggest to skip it. It would make you feel unpleasant a lot of times.

I do want to though point out something about the ending that will be a spoiler for anyone that will see it so... if you do not want to see it, don't. I just want to express about not expecting this.

I expected a better ending and I am not talking particularly about a happy ending. Actually with such a story I did not expect a happy ending at all. In the end he ends losing his mind after he finds his supposedly real self. The end was nice to be honest but felt quite unrewarding. Like you read a story of a man struggling to achieve something and as soon as he gets 1 step away from realizing his goal, he dies. (PS: The guy does not die).

It is a shame the ending felt so unrewarding (to me), but then again it was ok and an acceptable ending. I would by no means call this a bad ending. The ending though is the only reason it does not get a 10/10 since the ending of a story to me holds 70-80% of how much I will end up liking the story. But again, it is personal preference that makes me not like it.

I am really glad I found about this manga and read it!

Flat and meaningless

This manga definitely was an interesting one...at first at least. It intrigued me from the start, had me reading on and had some great concepts.

Unfortunately, starting from the Nanako arc, it went downhill. The ending was rushed and fell flat. It failed to be meaningful from my perspective. The author throws a bunch of twisted "wtf" moments and overplays it in an attempt to be meaningful. Can fool those who are newer to this genre, but (sadly) it couldn't fool me.

What a trip. Half the time I felt like I was tripping out on drugs. The concepts tackled within the manga are both so foreign and familiar at the same time. You feel like you can connect and follow the story, but not without some extrapolation and thinking on your part.

Excellent concept, but lacks real meaning

The story's concept was extremely interesting, and the various situations were quite entertaining to behold, but I felt that the author ultimately went for the shock factor without much real psychological content. The series somehow ends too soon, with only a few "cases" in total, so you feel it doesn't really fully explore this otherwise extraordinary ability, and the "cases" that do get resolved are presented in a way that will shock you at first, but may make you feel "eh?" after thinking about it some more.

In the end I walked away without any real insight into the human condition, just a bunch of over-dramatized nutcases. If you don't read it for psychological insight though, this is an extremely novel manga with a level of shock-factor entertainment that you'll rarely find elsewhere.

Homunculus is one of the most amazing manga's I have ever read. If you're into psychological manga this is for you. By an amazing mangaka, Homunculus is certainly one of my all time favourites.

page turning!

if nothing else, it kept me so very interested. the entire concept, the characters, (especially Ito! he was incredibly interesting and such a good character) the situations... the art... the psychology behind everything, the homunculi... it flies by without using too many or too few words. yamamoto uses his characters a lot to tell the story, and not just words, which was very pleasant.

now, my only complaint is that the story kind of plateaued somewhere in the middle... and never came back down. i felt like it was a roller coaster that built up and built up and built up and... never amounted to anything really. that's only my humble opinion though. the end was a little muddled also... i was kinda like... hmm... hmm? but it is ambiguous and goes along with the psychological theme left to interpretation by the readers. can't blame him for that - plus it fit the whole character. it left me wanting more, though, more answers and more understanding. i might need to read it again to seek that out, but we'll probably just have to fill the holes with our own speculations.

oh and another complaint, sorry - it's just really not that realistic at points... not just the homunculi, but like others have mentioned, the other character's reactions, some of the situations... it just left me a little unsure of the story. it more than made up for it, however, in other parts of the story.

the only thing i'm really, really confused on is the serial killer category...? maybe i missed something really big?! haha...

anyways, it wasn't all that twisted and horrific and gross, it was a LOT more heavy on the psychological, so if you have such reservations i'd give it a try. heck, if you're at all interested in stories that weave theories and take you on a page turning adventure (ok, not literally, more a psychological adventure mind you - he doesn't travel too far haha), give it a try!!

Great idea, but slightly difficult to believe

The premise of the manga is quite intriguing, delving into psychology and the like without pause. The homunculi described have no shortage of creativity, and the main character is suitably freaked out by them. Supporting characters are also wide-ranging, each with his/her own faults and habits, which keep the manga interesting. While some might not like the art style, it is definitely unique and realistic, two qualities that work well in this kind of manga. These factors set the scene for an amazing series, but there are a few issues that stunt its score.

1) The main character is seriously screwed up. Just when you think he's as weird as he'll get, another strange fetish/habit rears its head. This isn't a horrible issue, just one that keeps readers from deciding whether or not they like him or not. It also might drive away tentative readers.

2) This is the one that determined the score I gave this manga. Because of the main character's ability to see homunculi, he has a tendency of acting EXTREMELY strange. This is a given. However, what is very hard to believe is the way that NO ONE really gets freaked out by his actions. Now, this might be easy enough to believe if it's just in the streets, but his behavior gets even stranger when he's trying to "help" or "fix" the homunculi. But, no matter how strange and intrusive he may seem (pressing himself against people to "hear" them, touching in random places, muttering things that seem unrelated and crazy), no one seems to notice it's particularly insane. Sure, they think he's a bit weird, but no one really yells "YOU'RE CRAZY," which would be the normal response to his behavior. Similarly, no one tries to escape or run away from his actions.

Yes, the manga is very thought-provoking. Yes, it helps delve into the human psyche. Yes, the characters are interesting and varied. Yes, the art is very unique. And yes, it's extremely original.

But the major issue with it is the amount of disbelief that you have to push aside in order to get anywhere when Nakoshi (the main character) interacts with a homunculus. If this wasn't such an issue, I would definitely've given this a ten. But, since it is, I'll have to go with an eight.
