Description
Aoyama Sousuke, a college student who suffers painfully from his parent’s traffic accident. He chanced on Shinoda Kozan - a Sumi-e artist at an exhibition. Then, Kozan was interested and surprisingly accepted him as his disciple. However, Kozan’s granddaughter is strongly disagreeing and decidedly makes a bet for the “Kozan Award”. She wants to defeat Sousuke at any cost. Although he seemed uninterested in Sumi-e painting at first, he finally turned out to be attracted to it. He then gradually recovers his feeling by each stroke he draws...

A True Diamond in the Rough

It's a rare thing for a shounen manga to handle a story like this the way it does.

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
And while Shinoda Chiaki is ostensibly the "beautiful female lead", there is zero romance in this manga. Well, unless you count one panel where Komae and Kanegishi are holding hands. At any rate, Aoyama and Shinoda don't get together and their friendship barely gets past "lukewarm".

It's not a problem, just a nitpick on my end. I just find it hard to believe that a woman of her frankly incredible beauty remains single.

I can give Sen wa, Boku wo Egaku my highest recommendation. It is among the best manga I've read, in terms of both artistry and storytelling.

Please don’t let BeAsOne’s ‘review’ make you decide whether to start this series.

Firstly, it has been licenced in English and picked up by Kodansha Comics, so the translation and image quality is brilliant.

Secondly, sumi-e painting is generally in black ink, on white paper. So, their complaint of “colorful paintings in black and white” is completely moot.

I adored this series. I connected a lot with the themes and struggles Aoyama goes through and reading it was a very cathartic experience. I would highly recommend it to anyone. The sumi-e artwork in the series is absolutely breath-taking.

It could perhaps make a rather enjoyable 2 hour long flick. You could probably find a movie with the exact same premise and just watch that instead. A manga about colorful paintings in black and white while reliant on the current scan quality and translated dialogue will not make this an enjoyable read. It's got zero original ideas then all you're left with is the execution.
