Not your average Trash

If you're looking solely for brainless manga with overpowered main hero to indulge your cravings for power - this manga is not for you. SUDDENLY - it has plot. And a good one. And SUDDENLY the characters here feel alive and well made, they are not just a dull background that makes our hero shine in front of it. Nah. First Dark helps others and showing his badass side then Dark is in trouble and others help him, they are weak, but they try their best it's very nice and feels like family relationship not just teammates. Except the mage. Yeah, the mage is true to himself.
I highly recommend this manga to anyone with common sense, if you're baffled by other negative reviews please reconsider. Those people read it only for power fantasy. If you want plot you have different path than them. Those people praise art but not author. Yet artist can't draw backgrounds at all. He is not that good. You should have zero taste to like that. Though he good at character design, I will give him that.

I didn't like the gender swapped too at first, but I didn't knew that this one is actually the part 2 of 4 in the original novel and after some time you'll not really care about the gender anymore.
Some spoilers that I found in Korean about the novel(light spoilers):
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
Dark Lady is the second part of volumes of the original novel and the most famous one, this adaptation is about it.
The Origin's series(Murim World in the novel) is the part one.
All parts are chronological by time, one after the other, the only unfinished one is the one currently in publication(part four).

Now some true spoilers for who is curious or got problems with the gender swapped(heavy spoilers):
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
After some time will really look that what happened with him was not really the worst possible, but luck.
Plus the wiki of the novel says about it just in the Part 2, looks like he got back to his original body and world in part 3.
Can you feel better knowing this or give another chance now?

This one improved with the time and is really different from most of other gender bender stories(in a good way).
The Origin's series is really bad, just skip that ugly thing and keep with this one only, really!
Good read for everyone!

much better than all those ego-stroking OP protag series you usually see

Pretty good story and art (backgrounds are LQ, but consistently waterpaint-y does have its charms)
The gender bender is a nice twist and done in a believable way. though not all of the effects on his/her actions may be as obvious due to the medium (comics dont lend themselves well to deep backgrounds).
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
The relieving herself due to memory-loss is a bit over-the-top, but not totally unbelievable considering muscle-memory (it didn't happen before that moment. And she has forgotten what to do with the signals of 'a full bladder'😉

that said, considering his power there *should* be a way for him to resist (such) magical effects... which he would surely have noticed if he didn't consistently underestimate anything he runs into in this world.
I guess that is one of his major weaknesses.

Anyways, too bad the story is not as deep as it could be, but it is still executed pretty well. I guess I should probably look into official transaltions of the novel as well.
The lack of uber-OP protag plot-armor with unreasonable plot-points that basically only favor the protag or his/her token servants and unrealistic opponents so far added to the above means it is definitely a worthy read.

Some gender-bender enthusiasts may be disappointed by the seeming lack of psychological impact, but we should not forget that the protag is supposed to be 72 years old and has had a rich past of mental tempering.

Definitely worth a read.

Surprisingly enough, this isn't the usual "mc gets op powers and a harem" garbage

This is one of the few stories on this site that has a plot beyond "just use OP powers and make girls wet xddd" or "just get pampered by flawless men xddd".

It also has substantial character development, which again, is extremely rare in stories on this site. Most authors think character development is "just level up and get more op powers lmao".

To start off with, the MC is an OP cultivator, gets isekaied and finds out that everyone in this world is way weaker than he is. But instead of just going around and beating up "bad guys" while women throw themselves at him (which is what usually happens in stories like this), the MC loses his powers and has to get rescued by the normal guys that he used to look down on. He falls into depression, starts drinking, but one of his companions convinces him to not give up and start over. Even when he gets his powers back and think he's unstoppable, he gets humbled again because he underestimated an opponent that he thought was weaker, because he didnt understand how the technology in this world worked.

The author also takes care not to focus on the MC too much, there are many chapters where the focus is on other characters in order to give them their time to shine and progress the plot instead of having everything revolve around the MC powering up (which again, is a common flaw in this genre).

It's very refreshing and there are many memorable characters with their own personalities and goals, instead of the usual cast of cookie cutter stereotypes that are just there to make the MC look good (because the MC is usually just the author's self insert).

I love everything.

Yes! This is fantastic, over the top, cliche and stupidly fun. I love this story so much. It has EVERYTHING that I adore.

Mechs? Check.
Isekai? Check.
Wuxia? Check.
Not too medieval European-ish settings? Check.
Gender non conforming AND queer rep? Hell, YES, check! (Even if it's done rather flippantly and still falls into queer baiting status.)

But what really has me adoring this series is: NO. Sexual. Romance for Dark.

OH, HELL YEAH!

The one thing I can't stand about mainstream webtoons/manhwa is how sexual romance is shoved down the throats of the reader's and EVERY MC. This is so refreshing and different! In fact, Dark was confirmed virgin before his seventy something year old ass got dropped stark naked into a completely different dimension...and that's not going to change in the foreseeable future?! Yes, yes, yes, yes!!!

A few of these Titans reminds me of Mamoru Nagano's The Five Star Stories' Mortar Headds like the Machine Mess Auge, Scepter and Bangdoll. But Minerva's personal Titan specifically reminds me of the Yen Xings just waaaay bulkier.

Hell, even the politics, the actual battles themselves and some of the characters feel like (highly simplified) fan interpretations of FSS's entire cast, setting and world building. Being reminded of my favorite manga series every time the Titans step out would be enough to shoot this to my number one webtoons/manhwa spot but Dark being memorable and his personality NOT being like Amaterasu no Mikado's really makes it stands out.

They do share the whole becoming a biological woman thing as well. Except AnM does it whenever he feels like it, or when his separate 100% female selves acts out without his consent...which is a whole other issue. Also AnM is a literal God with ALL the mind boggling, reality warping powers that that entitles and so far (manhwa-wise) Dark is certainly not that.

It is a good story with a non shonen bad ass MC

The story is just what the description tells you . The author more or less tells us how magic works and sets the scene in the first chapters . And then he goes on exploring this new world richer in 'ki'.

It has stayed in the upper 100 of the yearly rank quite some time so it is obviously not a bad story 150+ of the other ranks.

If you are looking for a shonen or your typical gender bender this won't be it .(characters don't always win ,nor there are ass pull power-ups,on harem nor are they randomly changing their gender ).

And yes
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
some guy unable to kill him sacrifices an artefact to cast the dislike spell and turns into the weak girl that ruined their previous mission
,
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
he obviously gets depressed about this(70+ years of training gone)
but soon after he gets back on his feet and the story goes on .

(still pretty bad ass
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
unyielding, fighting fantasy creatures ,etc.
)...If you did reach chapter 28 and liked the plot, you'll probably like the rest even more (there's a war ,dragons, other kingdoms, demon/spirit gods from other dimensions ...).

If you don't like it after ch 28 because your ideal MC has to be a macho man
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
something is wrong with you (the story stays the same)
.Down with the archetype of the harem heroes.

And lastly if you are not into fantasy/war stuff it might not be your cup of tea. Also there's no random masacres ,tortures... instead there's actual plot.

This is a mix of mecha fighting, war politics and traditional western fantasy. None of this is done poorly and the characters are pretty fun, but events are quite random and the trajectory of the story is quite unexpected. I have no idea what is the purpose of the MC or the author in regards to story direction.

Arguably, it is is because the MC doesn't really have a purpose. He is just enjoying his very eventful life as a warrior with friends and

family

A balanced take on this controversial series
by Lokin
July 3rd, 2023, 4:05pm
Rating: 6.0  / 10.0
I like this series, but there are aspects that could have been done better.

I don't care if people are mad about the switchbait with all of these aloof genres. I enjoy GB, but GB is not the best integrated in this story. (I'm not going to scapegoat the random GB event because it's irrelevant to why I gave it this score.) But that's not the issue here. The issue is that the tone and pacing are mismatched, there's a lack of focus and it can be seen by some frustrated readers.

From the beginning, we've been introducing to the dilemmas of Country K, and it seems like that the author wants to open this up as a political intrigue.

Then we switch perspective to a group of merry-go-round adventurers where let's call it as Party A, cool. For about 30-40 chapters and lo, we pretty much "forget" about the initially introduced Country K and focus on Party A, which is a bunch of some funny shenanigan comedy and light hearted action.

Then suddenly BAM! We are reunited with Country K's dilemma, and the author tries to tie the characters of Party A to Country A, from a light hearted journey to something way too heavy.

It's the whiplash that's the issue.

Afterwards, the author introduces us to characters of Country C, Country A, Country... you know the gist, and there's like at least 5 major characters per country! It's as if they wanna do their own GoT and is playing civilizations.

No more funny shenanigans, just serious political events.

Even then, the political events and war events are not well done. You know the rule of "show not tell", well instead of witnessing the action during these events, we just have everything mostly as a flash back and have the military commandants narrate everything... Oh god it feels so long and not immersive.

Then suddenly like out of NOWHERE there's some random ass character that let's call Papa A (those who read it know who I'm talking about), then with him it's like Sponge Bob tier comedy.

The problem with the series is that the tonal shift is not handled carefully enough after the GB event, and that the war events are well, too descriptive and make people lose sight of the story. It feels like MEMORIZING FROM A HISTORICAL EVENTS TEXTBOOK.

If the author introduced us to Country A without giving much focus on the adventures of Party A, it wouldn't devolve into this kinda issue.

Also, the author keeps introducing some characters where you'd go ohhhh hmmm it might be relevant later, but... they don't, just more setups for no reason. And it could be quite a let down. You'd be like, oh is that going to be a major plot point, then you endure for like 100 chapters while keeping that small detail in mind then... nope... or not yet! (I'm referring to
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
Silver Dragon, the Spirits, and the Red Dragon, and Lana
)

Eventually, it become really hard to track all these people. Imagine that you're a guild leader of a video game, there's no way you can keep track of everyone in your 500 members guild. But this is what this series is doing, and it's hard to keep the focus on.

Strong points
- good comedy, when the author decides to insert comedy (cute funny chibi, misunderstand comedy)
- pacing is tight; kinda close to GoT
- lots of genres and if you like lots of different genres you won't get bored
- multidimensional characters (the author takes care of his side characters and gives them limelight nicely; so it can become surprising when he forgets about them); the villains can also be very compelling as it's not a black and white story; everyone have mostly reasonable rationales behind their actions and they're not really cartoonish (which is rare)
- the character designs; each character look unique and so are the mechs. There's a lot of efforts in designing the emblems, which is super cool.
- Unpredictable <--- this is this series' strongest point
- the MC has good chemistry/interactions with almost everyone except a select fews; making it not too much of a pain to read

Cons
- you can't turn your brain off when reading this. You will need your full focus and all your IQ because of the issues with the localization.
- Fights to be honest are kinda boring and badly choreographed; sometimes you have no idea what's going on
- artist sometimes reuse angles and poses (traces their own drawing multiple times; which can be seen with the Water Spirit early sequences)
- the climax and cliffhangers don't have the strongest hook; making it boring having to wait for it weekly, and binging it is the best experience
- the official translation has mistakes in not convey ing the actual meaning; the fan translations can't keep the names of the characters and places consistent. Making it a pain to follow unless you are ready for a reread.

Ambivalent (personal opinion)
- They did not use Castle nim but their own castle, which I applaud the effort. It can make the story look cheaper but I'd love the meme potential.
- main character is not being teased enough. I'd have more fun if he got the same treatment as the green brother in 4cuthero. Wasted potential lol.
- highly controversial but my favorite character is Torziel. I really enjoyed the Torziel X MC interactions (not romantic of course). And the amount they had was not excessive but quite right.
