Good manga but not for everyone

I think this manga is great when you finish reading it and remembering the manga, you remember only the good parts, the author is significantly more horny in like the first half of the manga in my opinion but later on it subsides.
I like the growth of the MC and the action sequences and art are great

Gantz seems to have two opposite affects on readers. Either people enjoy it or others think it's terrible, there's not much middle ground apparently. I first read Gantz as a teenager back in the early 2000's, since then its longevity remains. I always re-read it. For me personally, it's my favorite. People may not like it because it has a more Hollywood-like feel to it. It's almost like a shounen with seinen themes. It's very straightforward and action-packed in that regard. Do not expect meaningful or deep philosophical discourse. Objectively speaking it's not the greatest but the quality overall still puts it amongst the top manags out there. The one shining triumph of this manga is it's character development. Also, the author isn't afraid to permanently kill off characters. Furthermore the intricacies of the plot (which are revealed at the very end) are extremely unique. I don't know any sci-fi like it. People claiming its just a "survival" plot have likely not read the entire manga to solve the mystery of the Gantz ball. If anyone says mysteries are "unsolved" they either were to impatient to read it all or can't remember. Literally, everything is explained. Even the offshoot ESPers and Vampires are explained, people just don't remember I guess. There's much more to the story than what meets the eye. As for the one gripe I have, the last arc isn't as fleshed out as it could be. There's not enough action in the last arc and the last fight feels rushed. But I wouldn't let that deter you. If you enjoy action, character development, sci-fi, and unexpected/shocking story-telling then you will love Gantz.

One of the best Seinen series with a relatable male lead.

Many people feel different about this series with the excessive gore, unnecessary character deaths, and the unexpected sex scenes....NOT ME! The hyper violence really makes this series great where nearly every character can die.....again. Also, this has one of the horniest protagonist I ever seen. The main character starts to grow on you eventually. In earlier chapters I hated him, but he gained my respect later on (especially after getting laid.) Everything within this series is a sci-fi fans dream. The content and main character are mature to the max so enjoy if your cool with that about him.

Gantz is really good, however some of the arc's are a bit over the place regardless the mc is really good and it's interesting to see his development as the story progressed. Also the ending felt odd but that's fine I guess.

battling aliens to bitter end.

I think if there's some things that are true to Gantz are fighting aliens. Lots lots of them. The reason why there's Gantz G and Gantz E after Gantz is simple, it is very good in depicting alien fights. If I have to describe the series from what I still remember about the series, then it would be 90% aliens killing and 10% fanservice.

One peculiar thing about these fights is that even at the very start it has been a struggle and it remains that way until the very end. There has never been an easy bosses here and it kind of keep me on the edge of my seat all the time. Gantz will always have a position in a rank of Monster series for me, it's just that good on that side. You can literally ignore everything else and still have a good time.

Great Action, Awesome Sex, Garbage Plot

What happens when you have lots of style, lots of sex, lots of action, lots of imaginative villains and no over-arching plot? You get Gantz.

This is an awesome manga that is tremendous fun for its first 20-25 volumes which then devolves into a plot-less incoherent jumble of fight scenes with characters who are as two dimensional as they come. Overarching mysteries are not resolved, character motivations are weak and the ending is mediocre. If you can stomach all this, by all means - go ahead and read this. In the meantime, I'll go and read SnK instead.

Very original and interesting plot, first of all, the characters are actually fine, average ones with social complex that remarks their craziness, anxiety etc.
The way the story develops is cool and of course not a boring lecture, I acknowledge being 15 years old but I actually enjoy the some of the erotic, comedy and sexual scenes that fit the atmosphere..
To finish, the End of world/ earth is a pretty well made plot with some epic fights and scenes, the best thing in this manga in my opinion is how each character have a struggle on surviving through each arc and how they ended up fighting to save the earth instead of giving up!
The author act out some character's feeling very well and follow a straight-forward plot according to each character personality.
10/10!

You have to like this kind of fantastic sci fi kind of reading. For me It Was an awesome reading.
There IS a great BUT: the fan service. Why mangakas and editors think men are the only ones Who read manga or watch animéconfused In most well known mangas put boobs ass And panties at some point. That IS disgusting.

Overrated.

I watched the anime and read the manga. But really I don't see what the fuss is all about. The premise of the story may of been new when this initially came out, but nowadays there are better variants of this survival game genre that are better written.

For one thing I dislike about the manga is amount of gratuitous nudity that's in it. Don't get me wrong I like boobs as much as the next guy, but way it's placed it feels cheap and unnecessary. For example, almost every chapter cover page has some chick with her boobs hanging out (that have nothing to do with the plot). The author even places these between dramatic events. Like say what is suppose to be a shocking grief stricken scene where one of the protagonist's teammate dies, you go to the next chapter transition, and suddenly you're staring at a pair of knockers... It's more disruptive than entertaining to say the least. Then there's this obnoxious vibe that's present in the manga that feels like, I don't know, "exploitative" to women? I found the whole manga filled with too many cruel and obnoxious people like rapists and thugs to be enjoyable. Add this to amount of gratuitous nudity that's in it. It just gives the whole thing a bad feeling that I'm not a fan of.

But the real down point of the manga is not that, it's how poorly written and how frustratingly dumb the characters in this story are. Take the protagonists for example, the story begins with them dying because they tried to outrun a train instead of stepping back onto the platform to avoid it. What kind of an idiot does that? I think the excuse was that they forgot it was an express train and thought it would stop by itself. But if you stop for 2 seconds, you'd realise how stupid that is. One, they had been waiting on the platform in the first place so obviously they would know what the next train would be. Two, unless they were waiting at the very end of the platform why would they think it would be faster to sprint to the end of a long train station platform instead immediately getting back where they jumped off?

The whole manga is filled with poorly thought out writing like that. You got civilians constantly getting themselves getting themselves killed because they stand around foolishly, even taking photos on their mobiles instead of immediately running away from danger. The way they nonchantedly spout lines like "Is this CGI" or "Oh they're shooting a movie" before dying just beggars belief.

Another example would be the Gantz players. They are given these unlimited ammo sci-fi energy guns that are "accurate to 1km". These godlike wpns can even "lock on" and not require line of sight. As well as super suits that can jump buildings and guarantee mobility. The enemies they're asked to fight are basically nearly all melee range aliens. So do these idiots do?

They run right up to the alien just to "shoot" and get surprised when their hands get chopped up. To top it all off, they like to make faces at the aliens for a long time before they actually pull the trigger. There is literally ONE guy in whole manga that realises what they're holding in their hands are in fact GUNS not baseball bats and shot the aliens at long range. But inexplicably the guy decides to run close to melee them half way through and inevitably get himself killed.

Finally there's that stupid god awful ending. Without spoiling too much, Earth ends up almost destroyed bc after the defeating the aliens, the Gantz players were too busy raping alien prisoners and forcing them into fights before properly securing the mothership. I'm not kidding.

To this all I can say is WTF Japan, WTF.

Good action. Characters are the worst.

The redeeming quality of Gantz is the gore and action. There some novelty in the plot, but really - we've all read insane death survival games, and they all summarily progress in the same way.

The worst thing about Gantz are the characters. The MC is really hard to bear in the beginning because he's pretty sleezy. His best friend is heroic and just ... but so much to the point that he feels fake and two-dimensional.

You will get really sick of the female characters, especially if you're reading this as a girl. There is a lot of fanservice. You have boobs, panty shots, and what have you pushed into your face every chapter.. The imbalance in the way female characters are treated and male characters are treated gets really irritating because let's face it - they're just there so that there are tits in story. The girls are damsels in distress or sexual objects ... and that's pretty much it.
In general, all the characters are flat, and I ended up not caring at all when they died.
