Description
The tale begins on January 1965, Vietnam. Hikaru Minami, a newbie reporter, lands in Saigon to begin photographing the war. Thus does his story of war, growth, life, and a tragic love begin.

Drawn in a simple and light style that belies its subject matter, complementing the writing very well.

It was true after all

This is one of the most divisive manga I've ever seen. For all those who rated 0, search "Winter Soldier 1972 Documentary" on youtube to hear straight from the horse's mouth of the atrocities they committed in Vietnam.

History lesson from a manga

I personally feel quite moved that there is a mangaka who write about my country. Yes, there is two battle in Vietnam that was called with the same name, as stated in one of the previous comment before mine. Oh, also, another clarification, the battle of Điện Biên Phủ on air was at the northern areas of Vietnam. It was battle in around October, 1972, started with the attack of the US aircrafts, bombing the northern part of Vietnam, trying to destroy the northern part of Vietnam.
I am quite upset, though that the comments of some people are a bit too emotional. I do understand though that why they are so upset about the manga. This manga is a bit of an exaggeration, honestly. As far as my knowledge go, there is no Vietnamese young girl who was like that girl in the manga. Yes, there are quite a few young children who worked as spies for the government, and yes, there were women soldiers, who fought at the war, used martial art, self-defense, and weapons. However, there is no such girl who fight like a ninja, fly from a building, and cut people head with a knife at an inhumane speed like that.
Nonetheless, I am appreciate someone who actually try to write about the war of my country. But then, I would want the author to describe the war with a neutral eyes. I might not have the best neutral viewpoint, for I am Vietnamese, but from my various experiences and after learning my own country's history from other's perspective, I tried to write this with the little knowledge that I have.

p.s: Not to offend anyone. But I would really like it if people can try to write in a more polite manner using proper language. Even though I am quite dissatisfied about some part of this manga as well, I think that it's better to talk rationally and try to explain, rather than trying to express your anger through such kind of provocative language. It's not appreciated, not at the very least for using curses. Thank you.

Manga and war are both serious. Yes you heard me.

I don't begrudge the person who said it, but I thought that if we didn't take manga as seriously as we do there would be no meaningful discourse of it. It's actually a problem for the industry because most people think comics when they think manga, and as we all know comics are for children...

(In case it wasn't abundantly clear, that was sarcasm.)

More on point: Dien Bien Phu is taking on a sensitive subject. The concern over how it's going to handle the subject is real and I hope it realizes that it can't please everyone, that there's going to be an American offended for every Vietnamese it pleases and vice versa. But I also hope it treats all sides with respect even though it's clear even without retrospect which was the right and and which was the wrong one.

Rating 10 to offset the 1s as we speak.

Misunderstanding: There are 2 big battle with the name Điện Biên Phủ

Kind of late posting this but I have to make thing clear here
There is 2 big battle with the name Điện Biên Phủ.
1st battle( Battle of Điện Biên Phủ ) actually happen in Điện Biên Phủ vs French.(very important victory for Vietnam in that period).
2nd battle( Điện Biên Phủ on air ) DO NOT happen in Điện Biên Phủ vs America BUT still got named AFTER the 1st battle due to it's importance.
Hope this help bigrazz.

...that there really is a manga for anything and who gives a flying f*** about accuracies when reading manga? Even the so-called facts might not be entirely correct. I'm happy to see references to real life events, which somehow made the story easier to relate to and understand.

Onto the review itself, the simple and striking art style may not please everyone but it is a breath of fresh air to me. Story is a little simplistic at times and but holding a good linear pace so far to unravel things bits by bits while progressing. Characters are still being built up but my humble opinion is that that the mangaka would not disappoint by leaving 2-dimensional characters all over but would not focus too much on character development either, which is cool with me. The overall atmosphere is great, that's what matters.

Would give a 7-7.5 rating but make a 9 to even out those moronic ratings.

Now that i realize how many trolls i should get rid of before they ruin my tasty meal. I see in Vietnam there are people who make jokes about even greater thing than this and it's fine. If you can't stand close your door and shut in your room. Most people here do not care about such puny thing. Manga is for having a good time, can't enjoy it we can help but insult it, you can stay silent.

Cute art style, cruel character, brutal war, crazy action and quite realistic (as much as it can be).
Damn, I can not wait for next chapter.

PS: Look at the chart and you can see at least 9 trolls lol => Never take comic/movie/novel for real, since they are purely for fun.

I can't stand this!! The manga is corrupting the image of Vietnamese in the war of 1960s, and what the f**k is about 1965? This time, Dien Bien Phu has not such a thing to tell, because the main warplace is in Saigon, the current HCM city, and the place Dien Bien Phu hasn't anything very big to happen. This manga makes me mad!!

History lesson

Boy oh boy what kind of English is that?

If you never study history, i will tell you that dozens thousands of Us troop were seriously injured or died in Vn war. And about 1 million of Vietnamese solders from both sides lost their lives, as well as about 3 Millions more of innocent, normal VietNam citizens. And Lao and Cambodia lost half of that number, about 2 millions peoples.

If you consider the population of Vietnam at the time, it feels like for every ten people you meet on street, one would die because of war sooner or later. Other 6 would suffer from losing relatives, starvation, poverty, illiterate and intoxicated. Even till today the effect of those poisonous chemistry still remains. Then you would understand how cruel the Indochina war was.

This manga obviously doesn't deserve a 10, but i will rate 10 to balance things out.
