Honey and Clover is mostly, about friendships.

I found no other manga compares to what Hachikuro achieved. The series is perfect on the exploration of the characters depth, their relationships to each others, all their past and problems, their painful love life, their study and career, and the future. I stack it along with my top/best three manga, along with Fruits Basket and Gakuen Alice.

If you want deep great story and drama. Read it! Also the two seasons of the completed anime, since both of them are awesome.

But I wish the scanlators also care about the quantity though. But still thanks for all the great works!

As the person below me said, it was an amazing slice of life. The story actually came to life, you could watch the characters grow and change, it was amazing. That manga had so many great lessons in it. I loved every minute of it!

Not Into It

So I watched the first season of the anime, and was completely unimpressed and disappointed. It gets such great reviews but I totally didn't like it. First of all, I don't get the appeal of Hagu. She's 18 but looks, and for the most part acts, like a child. And she has two guys who fall for her. Why? Do they have Lolita-complexes? Secondly, the romance in it is totally disappointing. Basically, everyone has an unrequited love. And for those who confess and are rejected, never move on. They just sit around waiting for their situation to magically change. Boring. At least try to seduce your love or something. Granted, I haven't watched the entire series, so something might change later on. But I really couldn't stand to watch another episode.
There were a couple of things that I liked. I like the whole, coming of age, trying to figure out who you are aspect. Also, it is pretty realistic. I usually like these types of slice of life mangas. Unfortunately, this manga will make you realize that sometimes, real life needs to be embellished.

Honey and Clover proves to be the most touching tale I've read/watched ever. I've cried so many times, it isn't funny!!
I love Morita!! He's such a whack...he totally keeps the humour in the story with his crazy antics. And Takemoto is such a nice guy...awwww...and of course, Mayama with his stalking!! Shuu-sensei is pretty crazy too. Esp. matters concerning Hagu.
It still puzzles me that Hagu's an adult.
The manga has been translated upto 12 chapters only....I'm following the anime which holds true to the storyline.
I love it till now!!!

I actually enjoyed most of the series. It was fun. But the ending.... was dogshit.

its sad the author pulls the open ending garbage like there actually good author's making good decisions but sadly that is not the case.

Many of characters barely grow in this time span as well as the fact that the romance is kept open ended while keeping the pacing a snail.

Overall it could've been good fun show. But the ending ruined it. the journey saves it from going into the negative but the ending ruins any chance for it being actually worth watching.

Gah, I don't know where to start. This is my ultimate favorite.

You know when characters grows on you and you feel like they are now a part of your life.
This is what this manga gave to me. Well honestly the anime one gave life to the manga and I favor the anime a lot more.

Their adventure, the unrequited love, the friendship, comedy, and especially how it depicted the inferiority complex and the loss of meaning in life.

I watched it when I was 11(almost 8 years ago)and averagely liked it, turns out watching it again as I grew older made me realize a deeper meaning behind it all.
Yes, to the people having a hard time liking it, read it or watch it again, maybe you'll get another message. The Bittersweet memories of life.

Reply:
@kinky-chan: That was the point of Mayama's character. He's using Yamada...then again you'd understand why....Even Rika was using Mayama. You get the pattern? While Yamada also used Nomiya in a way.

And because life isn't just about ending up with each other, just reality that's all.
There are a lot of exaggerated stuffs in H&C but that's just for comedy.

Yeah maybe it's just not your type. Haha own preferences.

I love the anime. But the manga holds the original spirit of this series. Don't be afraid of the art, which is not so cool, because the story makes up for it. It's a wonderful tale, touching, real, lovely. Not simply sugary romantic.

If you're looking for just romance, the series may not work for you. It is an amazing slice-of-life story. Each character is different and has their own unique life to cope with. Some message are so good.

I only started following up on the story a few months ago when I saw it in Shoujo Beat magazine, so maybe the art was worse in the beginning but I personally loved the art. I like the mangaka's style, it's really different, but cute. The plot is also pretty good... love triangles and unreciprocated love and the like. Now the story IS a bit slow but it can't be helped since it's one of those sad-and-sweet-slice-of-life mangas like Cat Street or Kimi ni Todoke. And it's supposed to be realistic, which it is. Overall it's got a heartwarming feel to it. I personally prefer it to the anime or the drama, just because it's the original.

I don't understand how this is good actually. True, there are lots of meaningful points here and there but come on, what's with all the unrequited love? And honestly saying, even if some of the characters finally realized their feelings for each other, in the end they ended up giving up their love. And dude,

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
Mayama could be such a prick that I can't help but want to slap his face. He doesn't love Yamada yet he wants to get in between Yamada and Nomiya. Seriously, ain't he just tormenting the crap out of her? I really like Yamada's character out of all the others and I seriously feel sorry for her. But then again, I understand that feeling of liking someone to the point that you can't move on but she really should move on and focus on Nomiya, not using him as a soft pillow to cry on whenever she sees Mayama with that widow chick of his.

I'm sorry to say that this story is really messed up. Slice of life should be warm and bubbly but I don't get any from this manga nor the anime. No one's exactly moving on and when they did, it's not something that's very pleasant. It's like the story's there to tell us 'this character falls in love with this character, blah blah but hey guess what? In the end they won't get together and move on with their life! (minus mayama and that widow chick)' Yeah, realistic it is, but even in reality, someone's bound to end up with someone. Sorry, no my cup of tea.
