slowest burn of all time but so so sweet once theyre finally together. i love the way this author wrote her characters and the relationships between them. none of them were one dimensional imo. sumire’s relationship with hasumi created such great contrast to the comfort she feels with momo. this is my second time reading this after many years. i would give it a 10/10 but frankly the homophobia and racist caricature….. yeah. i would rate this manga much worse if only the story wasnt so great. but i’d totally understand if that made anyone else want to drop this and stop reading. if you could get past that, i’d definitely recommend for those who love heroines that are strong on the surface but a mess in their personal life lol, and the love interest that becomes her safe space/support. also love that the love interest had development of his own, i dont think it’s that common in this genre. i would hope he had development, considering the age gap which might throw other readers off too… anyway give it a chance if it sounds interesting 🙂 lol

A trashy depiction of a master / slave (s&m) relationship. Yes, that's what it is. They don't need whips, candles & chains to depict this kind of relationship (even though candles were mentioned in a later volume's omake & a random s&m illustration was used around vol.2 where the female MC was riding her pet).
I was hoping it would pick up but I gave up during the 3rd volume. It doesn't do anything particularly well. She keeps throwing random things and whatever sticks. No sense of purpose or a trajectory in this manga.
The drawings are terrible. I can't believe she was using 5! assistants for this title!!! What were they actually doing? The manga is devoid of detail, noteworthy art or backgrounds (😕). Really puzzled there...
Do you want to watch a Japanese movie with the same subject matter that's a true gem? Moonlight Whispers (1999).
Summary: Two seemingly innocent school kids are obsessed in fetishistic s&m games.
Watch it. Thank me later

I read this a long time when I was a teenager. But now after rereading it, I felt like i just wasted my time. The story wasn't as good as how I remembered reading it in high school. Plus, there's one thing I couldn't ignore nor condone after reading this manga again, which has massively decreased my enjoyment of the story, hence the low rating.
I don't understand why a lot of Japanese mangaka (especially in Josei manga) always do this to their male characters when they got SA'd. They just brushed it off like it's no big deal, like nothing problematic happened. This is so wrong on so many levels and I'm disgusted by this. To think the young me used to think well of this story.... sigh

I really don't like how Hasumi got drugged then manipulated into believing he got sex with Fuku, so the woman can take advantage of this and stay with him. I could still somewhat accept the author brushed this "date-rape" situation under the rug, only if they didnt end up together. But they did! Not only Hasumi would never know how he was actually tricked, but also the woman got rewarded by getting proposed by him, which tbh she doesn't deserve at all.

This manga is very emotionally raw and real, at least in my experience. I can relate to her in many ways.
That sense of suffocation and isolation can make people do stupid things--as seen with all of the main characters in this series. Sumire feels alone and suffocated after her ex-boyfriend cheated on her and impregnated another woman. As unlikely as it is, who doesn't yearn for a convenient, stable, pure, supportive, and genuine connection with another human being during times like this? Someone who understands you and keeps you sane, with no real strings attached?
Enter Momo, an emotional support dog in the shape of a human boy. Momo understands that what she needs isn't a boyfriend but a safe-space she can easily retreat to without pressure/chitchat. In a real relationship, both partners have to put in high levels of patience, communication, energy and time, but she's already too exhausted to insert herself into a serious relationship (hence momo, hence the lackluster relationship with hasomi).
This manga really sympathizes with the troubles that relationship-phobic individuals struggle with...that need for easy but authentic emotional intimacy in their lives even after they've been burned by a previous romantic betrayal. And I respect that. It's a huge problem in big cities. Young adults who are forced to spend all their energy pursuing their careers can often end up isolated from their communities, especially if the career is in a competitive field. Not simultaneously juggling a job and a relationship at the same time means you might not have the support you need... and the author showed that really well through the main female character.
The ending fell flat for me, but overall the story really resonates as a fellow stressed out adult trying to keep everything under control while keeping the suffocating isolation at bay.

I can see why Sumire refuses to see Momo as a full-fledged human being with his own feelings and troubles. She isn't guilty dating guys while having Momo in the house because Sumire is too stressed out to spare the emotional energy needed to think about Momo as a partner on equal standing.
And that's what I love about this manga. It emphasizes from chapter one that Sumire's thought process is flawed . Momo is seen hurt by Sumire's lack of consideration for him, even though he naively thought he'd be ok with being just a pet at first.
Convenient unconditional love does not exist, and this series explores what it takes for Sumire and Momo to realize that they cannot simply keep using each other as a "safe haven"... that emotional intimacy does come with strings because we are humans after all, not dogs (or saints). We can't just expect someone to happily invest time and energy in us if we can't do the same. And that's what I love about this manga. As for Hasumei , he was the representation of surface-level perfection that MC felt like she needed to have since her last boyfriend had an inferiority complex and cheated on her. Unfortunately, the MC doesn't realize that, in the end, she doesn't feel fulfilled with him because it takes too much emotional energy for her to open up to Hasumi. And then before she knew it, it was too late.
The ending fell flat for me, but overall the story really resonates as a fellow stressed out adult trying to keep everything under control while keeping the suffocating isolation at bay.

The female lead is constantly thinking, "I'd rather be at home with Momo," but won't realize her feelings for him and strings along men, wasting their time. This was extremely frustrating to me. Where is her common sense? Because even if she's not technically cheating, she has a man living in her home, sometimes sleeping in her bed, she's basically keeping a gigolo. I get it, he's her emotional support dog! But even if it's not sexual, it's a man who she has a questionable relationship with where they are intimate. Not to mention
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
she is a homewrecker and slept with Hasumi while he had a girlfriend.
So basically, she's trash. Another thing is the misogyny. This is a manga from the year 2000 and the author sounds like she grew up in the 90s or 80s so maybe I can believe that there are women actually pathetic enough to say "I can't survive if I don't rely on a man," or "a woman doesn't need a career, she just needs a good husband," gag those are actual quotes that characters say in the first chapter. I've heard enough about the gender divide in Japan that I can believe it, but even the women in her office are against her why? Because they're jealous? Are they not ambitious career women too? It seems like a ploy from the author to woobify the heroine more than anything else. It's so frivolously petty and ridiculous that I just can't believe it. And she keeps lying to both her boyfriend and Momo. It's seems so troublesome, yet she's so indecisive and messy with her relationships even though she's portrayed as some diligent, elite worker bee. I hate her.I had high expectations but...

after reaching the end of 4th volume I feel like dropping it. I mean, I can already see the ending. I don't feel any enjoyment at all prolly because I dislike how the lead has two guys. She's actually a nice character.. strong, smart, intelligent basically cool but how she handles her lovelife sucks. A guy pet and a boyfriend? I would've continue this only if things were taken seriously but the author is making the story way too unrealistic. Very predictable and unsatisfactory. If you wanna know what I'm talking about then try reading it. Adios to this manga.

I feel in love with this series and now it's my all time favorite Josie manga...
Sumire is not the usual heroine you see in mangas...
She is not perfect, and has her quirky and weak sides...
I love her character growth the most...
The manga is a delight to read and it took all my stress away...
The ending is also satisfying and it gave me a good feeling...
This is one of the most memorable and endearing manga that I've encountered.
And I will never ever forget and will forever treasure this work!!!!

I don't know why many people don't like Hasumi but he's one of my favorite characters in the series, if not my most favorite, so cute and funny. I love the art and how the author draws hair, they look so soft and fluffy, especially Momo.
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
It's so bad shipping the ship that you know they will break up for sure, it's just a matter of time. Every chapters about Sumire thinking of Momo made me nervous that they will break up. They came a long way though, more than 2/3 of the story. The reason why Hasumi & Sumire relationship doesn't work from the beginning is that she doesn't open up for him even though he asked for it, so she keeps lying to him, to herself & doesn't feel comfortable around him. I thought Hasumi would be a jerk but he turns out loyal to the end, broke up with no drama, I teared up lol. It was both of their faults that they broke up & Sumire is a hypocrite if she blamed Hasumi for living with Fukushima because they really didn't do anything too intimate.
Another thing is that Sumire doesn't fight for their relationship like Hasumi, Momo, Momo's ex & Fukushima, she let Hasumi did everything and never really into it. I don't think Fukushima is a troublemaker since Hasumi still loves Sumire even though she's trying to seduced him so many times. He was shaking a bit but still loves Sumire anyways. I think she's just an excuse for Sumire to realized her feeling toward Momo & to give Hasumi a good ending. I have a lot of comments about Hasumi & Fukushima's ending but that would be too lengthy.
I wish Hasumi knows the truth about Momo because he deserves to know it.
I love Momo's short hair btw haha.
