I started this from the anime, with obviously wanting more so I re-read it from scratch. The manga continues and of course, it has more contents than the anime. The entire series had a lot of innuendos, gags, puns, parodies, and breaking some 4th walls. Kokkuri and the others were entertaining, although there are some repetitive gags but nonetheless really fun to enjoy, the fluffs and softness is there with comedy to balance it right back as well.
The parodies was another matter that I've personally loved, being able to understand almost all the parodies, I loved how it was a throwback to many occasions for me. It was similar to Gintama with some parodies and all, but the development was pretty fun, it's slow but it is there.
It also reminded me of Inu X Boku SS in some ways, with the fact I find it welcoming towards the demographic despite the soft artwork and questionable contents sometimes.
Occasionally during every few chapters, there is heartwarming moments, although I thought it was an interesting series to not really mention the plot too often... There are actually a lot of small hints only to really make you realize what those hints were at the end.
Soft yet dark, the artwork is pretty easy going on the eyes but it's welcoming at least for me and sometimes...there is some outstanding scenes that made me laugh a bit. Honestly, I would have to say throughout the entire series, the parodies and the heartwarming moments was my favorite bits.
It's a good series I would recommend for people if they want to read something "troll"-ish and something very cute.

A shockingly complex dark comedy

At first glance, Gugure! Kokkuri-san isn't much to look at. It's a light-hearted gag manga about a young girl who is taken in by the fox spirit Kokkuri-san, and all of the whacky shenanigans they go through. It's pretty good, and very entertaining, but not necessarily great.
Fortunately, the manga only improves as it goes on, both art-wise and gag-wise. What starts off as pretty standard gag-manga with one-or-two-joke characters grows to contain some of the most incredibly-timed, unexpected punchlines I have ever seen, and while it plays it a little safe at first (though it is certainly a dark comedy from the beginning), you can see the mangaka, Midori Endou, put more and more of her herself into her work, growing less cautious over the course of its run. It is absolutely better for it. The one-joke characters turn from punch-lines into stepping stones for even better punch-lines. Characters are all very charming (even though, or maybe because, most of them are relatably horrible people). Most of all, you can tell Endou is having as much fun writing it as I am reading it, and boy, is it fun to read. I'm going to end this review here before it turns to rambling, but needless to say, if you like a good gag manga, this is absolutely worth your time.

Starts great; remains solid throughout.

Some of my favorite comedy mangas are 4-koma, and Gugure! Kokkuri-san fits well among them. The description doesn't do the manga justice, but as is typical for these kinds of stories, it's about a cast of wonderfully weird characters and their hijinks. Ichimatsu, the girl, considers herself a doll, and her notion that she is "unfazed by X" never gets old, as does her addiction to cup noodles. The spirits that possess her are similarly bizarre, and amusingly, in terms of comedy roles, the fox spirit (rather than the girl) is the straight man of the bunch.
The series starts great (except for the weirdness of the first 3 chapters being *very* similar for publishing reasons), and at its best, it compares favorably to the all-time greats. The character humor can be phenomenal and sometimes phenomenally gruesome; some of the meta humor is pretty ingenious; and so on.
The series is almost entirely episodic, however, and past some point (chapter 40? 50?) it gets a bit repetitive. Early on, the series even had a few rather serious moments, but these almost entirely disappear later on, in favor of more randomness. And while the spirits are initially drawn in mostly their human forms, the mangaka switched almost entirely to their animal forms later on - probably because they're easier to draw, but not entirely to the story's benefit. The ending is also a bit abrupt, begins in the penultimate chapter without any prior warning, and isn't 100% satisfying; and the few recurring side characters don't get any closure (like the shy girl trying to become Ichimatsu's friend via dubious means).
Ultimately, I highly recommend this series for the first few dozen chapters, but it's a solid read throughout.

A crossover parody you'll best appreciate if you're old enough to remember the characters they're parodying.... Tomoe Hotaru AKA Sailor Saturn, more morbid and gothloli than usual and stalked by tsundere NGE Asuka, lives neglected on cup noodles until lolicon(?) Youko Kurama and IY Miroku crossed with his tanuki familiar adopt/babysit her. There's also a catgirl. And tentacles. And a Ranma hot springs parody. And some pretty straightyup Inuyasha plot lampoon at the end.
I feel like a lot of younger fans, who didn't grow up with the 90's source material, won't realize how utterly hilarious this is. Don't get me wrong, it's funny in its own right- but the fact that it's basically a crossover fanfic lampooning all of the popular 90's mega-franchises is what really makes me giggle. And with the possible exception of Miroku, the chars parodied were all HUGE fan favorites at the time. A few still are.
Kamisama Kiss is a bad Yuuyuu Hakusho/IY fanfic too, but unlike it, Gugure is self-aware... And hilarious.
