Ahhh so good

This has been one of my favorites since I first read it. I love every part of it. I would be a very happy girl if this were to be licensed. I also quite enjoyed the oneshot.

The whole thing is quite dark. Never cheesy and somehow manages to avoid feeling contrived even though the story veers in to territory where it is very easy to slip over that line. Wonderful story telling and extremely artful illustration. This is very clearly not going to be everyone's cup of tea, but it is brilliant as far as I'm concerned.

An exceedingly dark story that isn't quite so dark once you get over it. You think about it after you finish it. And maybe you'll read it again like I did.

We have two protagonists: Mitsuo and Mitsuo, both with different names, but their personalities couldn't be any different. The mangaka does wonders with this setting - more than dark, their motives aren't the pure love or anything of the sort that makes boys love ridiculous. Their continuing reliance on one another is astounding. Their history, even more so.

It's a brilliant read, sex isn't just sex for the sake of it - there's plot to it, and the entire story, long after you finish it, leaves you think about it. Though I would've liked to see more, having only one volume is an excellent move for keeping us enthralled in this story that's not too long and loses itself, but not too short and doesn't leave us with enough.

So this one is interesting...

I found this book absolutely fascinating (like almost all of her work) and beautiful (like all of her work). My only issue is with the translation...see below if you have read all five chapters:
Spoiler (highlight to view)
Chapter 5 page 17: This wouldn't be a huge issue if almost the entirety of the plot hadn't been expressed through sex; masochism, sadism, dominance, submission, love, something else, etc. I found this when only the first two chapters were translated, and because I loved the art and Coponicus no Kokyuu so much, I found the raw and translated bits and pieces myself. In the Dangerous Pleasure Scanlation, they translate it to "I want to be broken." Now, in Japanese, I don't know if the verb 壊れる has the same connotation as "break" does in English, but when I read that it seemed romanticized--as if using the word brea implied he expected to be put back together. I was rather confused when people were saying it was a happy ending, because I never saw it that way. Also, the extra at the end goes further into how much he had given up on life, and rough, painful sex is all that reminds Dark!Mitsuo that he's still living. He also seems to just be nonchalantly waiting for the day he stops breathing, which is very painful for Light!Mitsuo, who describes their life now as being protected from a storm under an umbrella. I teared up during the extra.

Anyway! Look up the raws, look at the extra chapter, and enjoy. This series is psychologically fascinating on so many levels, and beautiful in the way I missed from her early work.

I didn't like it

The characters were too warped and sick for my taste. The beginning was too much of a stretch (calling someone out of the blue like that). The storyline was just too gross for me. I know the underlying concept that Nakamura-sensei is alluding to (Aristophanes' speech in Plato's Symposium) and I think it's great that she uses classical literature in her manga but this story just didn't work for me.

P.S. I like manga like Doukyuusei, Hand Which, Loveless, and Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle. Now you can compare my taste buds to yours.

Double Mints is very flowy, in terms of art and story telling. it's strange, but it's not the *sick in the stomach strange* ... it's interesting and touching and definitely deep. if you have an open mind, i highly recommend this one and all of her works.

Omg...
the storyline is dark and emotional filled with angst!
the art is quirky, very clean, and beautiful in its own unique way. I just love it, would totally recommend anyone who wants to read a dark yaoi smile

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
So in chp 4, the dark Mitsuo stabs himself after the light one watches a disc of the dark one getting raped. Then he wakes up in the hospital and he tells the light one that's he been reborn and kisses him. Okay. So seeing your "dog" (obviously more than that) see you being raped triggers you to stab yourself. What, you're filled with feelings of shame and embarrassment (of how low you sank) that you can just die (literally)? I'm just amazed at the self-harm that these people go through. They can never do it the easy non-violent way, can they? (then there wouldn't be much of a story)

It's interesting that this chapter starts out with the dark Mitsuo having sex with a prostitute, while the light one watches TV as he leans against the bed they're doing it on. Sort of like overcompensating. . . the dark Mitsuo reaffirms himself that he's still in control and denies the feelings of the light Mitsuo through hetero intercourse (might be a stretch in my thinking). Well like the prostitute said after having sex with the dark Mitsuo, they are a weird pair.

It's an interesting read as with most of her works. The emotions are intense, but restrained - hence the angst and hence the violent and disturbed actions between them. I wish this had a few more chapters (wouldn't mind a prequel that builds up to the reunion).

Not your average yaoi manga. Two men, polar opposites you can say, captured in this unusual tale while having a rather twisted relationship. Is it really love? Or is it just plain lust? I've reread it so many times but I still can't figure it out. But one thing's for sure, they can't live without another. Which really makes it stand out among the other yaoi mangas in the market. Don't expect a lot of sex scenes but do expect to be pulled in by this manga's strange allure. The art is not very appealing to me, thought it was a bit too simple but it is very unique. I don't know if i love it or not but heck, its so poignant and captivating.

Another piece of art from Nakamura Asumiko.. it gets rougher along the story and more serious. I love how the past is shown so the reader gets to understand, a little bit every time, how their relationship is shaped.

The art is unique, which captivated me. I loved the twisted personalities and the angst. There were just a few subject matter in this manga that I just couldn't fall in love with, but if it's your thing, you'll definitely fall in love with this manga.
