I hate it, but it gets a 5.

I hate the "plot" - glorifying promiscuity, cheating, and immorality in general, but it gets a 5 because, unfrotunately, it reflects modern society - at least to an extent. Even if that IS disgusting, and doesn't make the "plot" any better.
But I can't see how some people can say that it's a sweet, cute, or whatever manga. It portrays things which actually happen, unfortunately, unlike most shoujo manga, but it is in NO way sweet, or cute, or actually, good. Because it's not even well-written. The characters have no depht, the stories are just there, and the emotions aren't really real. They're not described as real, even if such situations do happen and it may relate to whoever.
But anyway, I really don't like it, so I'm not gonna read any further.

I've had my eye on this one for a while but have been afraid to pick it up b/c of the comments. Going into this I was expecting to have a bunch of crappy hentai stories w/o the hentai. You know the formula: girls are nympho sluts and the guys are either violent pricks or complete pushovers.
But that's not what I got. What you have is a portrayal of young love and how oftentimes it's fleeting, misunderstood, and more complicated than we think; and pretty accurate IMO (or more accurate than most). Sure some of the stories make you roll your eyes and groan w/ disgust, but I felt that, for the most part, they were accurate in their portrayal of the fickleness of puppy love.

Ignore most of these reviews..everyone is looking for some romance manga that can make them feel better about the crappy love lives they really have.
This manga is absoluetly excellent, not just in art, but in observing the human psyche. Face it, we all are fucked up, and this manga deals with these complex emotions in a very strong and well-thought out manner. highly recommend it if you want something to think about. Go read naruto if you just want inspiration.

I love some of the stories, but I HATE others.
The special chapters that focuses on a popular girl and her otaku boyfriend are really cute. But a downside is that they are repetitive.
I hate the story that involved the glasses girl. If anyone has read the raws then trust me, you will hate her too! The glasses girl and that push over guy with the popular girlfriend pisses me off, and how the manga choose to finish (with them) pisses me off as well. Arrgh.
All in all, some of the oneshots in this story is really good, and some are reallyyyy bad. There's so many that I forget the names... But I can say that liked the chapters where the girl is NOT a two-timing slut.

Hi, I have been reading Girlfriend very enthusiastically since stumbling upon it on the stoptazmo forums, and after reading some of the reviews here... I feel that some people aren't viewing Girlfriend in the 'right light'. When I started reading I certainly did NOT get the impression that this was a manga about love and viewing peoples actions without the concept of consequences. What I did think is that it's very simply a manga about really screwed up people. Now when I say this please understand that I don't think that the manga means to say that everyone is like this... or inversely that anyone is like that(however I'm sure some people are), I only mean to say that I feel that GF is meant to show us extreme circumstances where such acts of promiscuity may press onto bounds of acceptability. Now before the interwebs start ranting and raving about the nonsense that just spewed out of my hypothetical mouth, I by NO means would consider any sort of behavior in any of these circumstances to be acceptable, but the fact that it can persuade anyone into giving it a second thought(if only just that) is all that the writer is trying to do. I'll say it plainly and proudly; that even I myself occasionally feel sympathy for these characters, but that still does nothing to justify their actions. And fyi to some of you out there, there are plenty of people much more 'whore-ish' than this out in the world, so don't let your naivety fool you, but back to the point. GF is a good manga for those hypothetical novella stories that apply more to teenagers and those of us on the older side. I mean Jesus at least I can read it and say to myself 'At least my life's not that screwed up.' Anyways, lastly I'll say... give it a shot, like it or don't, but please understand what the stories are... extreme circumstances in a dramatic teenage world... but facing the fact that as fictional as these stories are, kids are gonna do what they're gonna do... especially when they're confused and emotional. I mean come on, don't you remember those imbalanced teenage hormones? Thank you for your time.

I thought Haru Yo Koi was bad, but at least in that story actions had consequences. This isn't at all like real life, or at least I really hope it isn't. Sex friends are one thing, but this is a story where sex friends are added on the sides of existing romances.
...Some group of "girlfriends" this is.
I did not find any of these stories to be heart warming. The author portrayed each story in the manner with which a heart warming scene should be portrayed, but the themes were less than endearing.
Sex without protection, sex with strangers, rampant cheating; how can this be portrayed as positive? One year from now, half those girls will be pregnant and the other half will suffer from infertility due to the STD's they carry.

I do not know what the intention of the creator is, but for some reason though it is indeed smutty as heck, the story affects me personally more than my libido. It is a kind of sad, happy, melancholic kind of manga. I think this would be best read by high school students, so they could ponder more on their life choices, and adults too for that melancholic feel though I bet if the younger ones read this, the point would be lost on them. I am doubtful they would understand this one bit.

Overall I think this is a very good manga. I enjoy the format, artwork, and most of the plots. I am particularly fond of stories about Uehara Minami and Takatsu. These just seems really real for me. These are all flawed people, some more so than others. Cheating, sex, love, etc are simply part of relationships. Some complain that the girls seem slutty or are whores, I simply don't see it. Ain't much in the world hornier than high school kids, cept maybe college students.

Girlfriend is a manga which leaves me with mixed feelings. Very mixed feelings.
One one hand, the art is gorgeous, and a couple of the stories are rather sweet.
One the other hand, the female characters are disloyal, two-timing sluts who bring my blood to a boil.
Now, I'm no stranger to ecchi manga, and such material can be rather fun to read, if only for the sex. Girlfriend, however, goes beyond simple guilty pleasure.
The sheer hedonistic nihilism present in this manga is simply sickening. The problem isn't the cheating (there's plenty of cheating portrayed in just about every hentai manga) or a lack of a story - but that the story *defends* the cheating.
Some may see this immoral, and quite frankly disgusting, behavior as "realistic" and that it reflects the real world. So? That doesn't make it any easier to stomach. If you see the characters acting like..., well, 'whores' is the only word which comes to mind, how the hell are you supposed to sympathize with them? (And if you do, I urge you to seek counseling.)
And that's the problem - the author portrays these betrayals in not only a positive light, but seems to honestly encourage it.
Like another reviewer mentioned, the author could have shown the negative consequences of the characters' actions, and at least pretend that there was a lesson to be learned. But no, the only message this manga delivers is that it's perfectly okay to cheat on your boyfriend - you'll still get the prince (and a fuck-buddy) in the end.
Girlfriend is one of those mangas that shows a pretty face in order to hide the ugliness underneath. In the end, it fails to deliver a romantic (or even compelling) story for those who actually want to *read* the manga, as well as fails to deliver enough nudity for those who are in it for the sex.
Unless you are like the author, and like to see two-timing skanks being portrayed as the 'heroines', you'd do best to stay away from Girlfriend.

Story/Plot
This is a romance manga made up of really smutty stories on different teenage relationships. The problem is that after the first volume only some of the stories were revisited later on but at least the good ones were revisted.
Artwork
The artwork is pretty decent for this romance, and was really good ind depicting the explicit sences however the characters were very indistinguishable.
Final Thoughts
The problem with this being on different stories is that it's easy to forget what just happened in one story however at least you're not burdened with learning the character's names. One serious problem I had with this was the sheer amount of sex and it was just missing one thing to be classed as a porn. ^_^
