Wonderous.

I've been following Suzuki Julietta's works for quite some time now and from Akuma to Dolce and Karakuri Odette to the current Kamisama Hajimemashita, her writing and art have improved tremendously.

Like others, I was also hesitant to give this a shot because of the art. Yes, so very shallow of me BUT, Tomoe did in fact, look girlish and Nanami looked unappealing. At least, that is what it looked like for its image on MU (some years ago). To be honest, the art wasn't as amazing as it is now and now, Nanami is gorgeous and Tomoe is hot.

When I finally gave this one a go, I was hooked and it began to have a special place in my heart. Years later and it still hasn't lost its touch. In fact, I think I've fallen more in love with it. How amazing it is for Suzuki-sensei to build up such a perhaps "normal-at-first-sight-plot-of-a-shoujo-manga" to become so much more than it originally was. It starts off normal--like a typical shoujo but really it is so much more. Although it begins like Karakuri Odette, with different scenarios in every chapter, it has transformed into one of the most epic love stories that make your heart throb and your feelings come crashing down like waves.

I love Nanami and Tomoe and their love story.

...and ohmygod. CHIBI TOMOE IS LOVE. /squeals.lalala.fangirling.gahhh

This manga seems fairly average and ordinary at first glance. I won't lie, when i first heard of it, I thought it would be another average plain shoujo and avoided it. However after watching the anime, (which did have its setbacks), i moved onto the manga seeing as it was still ongoing and I wanted to see some more Tomoe. Let me tell you, the manga is SO much better. Like I said, It's starts off as nothing extraordinary. It has a cute story, VERY likable, interesting and well developed characters. Some people mentioned that the manga was too draggy/long at parts and fillerish. While this is true, I still found the fillerish arcs enjoyable simply because of the characters who made it fun to read. I didn't really care if the main story wasn't going anywhere since the arcs were still enjoyable. Of course, the manga is currently at its peak right now imo, so yes, the story DOES move, and it's a good plot too. Its not just one of those school-life-comedy-no plot shoujos that it MAY seem like at initial glance.

I also want to mention how much I adore the characters. Tomoe- do I really need to say anything? He's so flipping sexy and I love his history with how he became a familiar. Mizuki's is refreshing and compliments Tomoe- he also has a sweet history as well. Akura-Ou is damn sexy too and Im always looking forward to learning more about him. Another one of my personal favorites is the Dragon King..he's hillarious! Finally, there's Nanami. She might seem very ordinary and plain for a heroine, but that's one of her biggest charms. I really like Nanami because she's so ordinary and is aware of it. Even though she thinks that Tomoe, an amazing deity liking her is silly, she doesn't let that stop her from loving him, and is remains honest with her feelings. This part of Nanami I really like. She's relatable and so down to earth! Its really refreshing to have her as heroine.

That being said, definitely check this one out if you love fantasy-shoujo-romances (Think Inuyasha), but make sure to be patient as it IS on the slower side.. not as slow as inuyasha though of course lol.

Sailor Fuku ni Onegai!

Sailor Fuku ni Onegai! was the reason I picked up this series, but outside of a girl becoming a god, there's not much else in the way of similarities. Oh, and handsome familiars. Honestly, it feels a bit like early Inuyasha where we keep getting new characters and every other person is in love with your lead female, lead male is brash and beautiful and technically forced into his position. Oh, and the shrines and youkai.

What I would consider the primary plot is being treated as a reoccurring subplot at the moment (to chapter 87). Some people may not like this, but I love it. I love that we have all sort of little arcs building the characters bit by bit while having hints of the past and future coloring the background. In a really big arc at the moment and I'm extremely eager to see how it works out. An anime began in the fall of 2012, so hopefully it will gain popularity and continue a bit longer. (The anime is pretty good. On point for the most part, though episode 13 is pretty different from the manga chapters which cover that arc.)

(Notes: Tomoe's chibi form and the Little Dragon crying are about the cutest things ever.)

I love all of Suzuki Julietta's mangas... Her characters are so likable and the stories she writes are awesome. This one is no exception. My only hope is that this one will be extended over many volumes, unlike her previous works which tended to be short.

I like how the main character isn't a stupid girl who just rolls with things. She fights back! And she's stubborn...in a kind of sweet and endearing way.
The humour is great, and the art work is fantastic. I really love the main characters <3 I want to have a chibi Tomoe (see chapter 9)!

Solid, complete series

I would say that Kamisama Hajimemashita is half filler and half amazing.

In the first 12 or so volumes of the manga, there is very little development to the story. An arc is presented based on some new side characters, and once the arc is resolved, those side characters have very little to do with the story. It reads as an episodic, upbeat manga that you would want to read every so often to feel good and happy, but not something that you're dying to read for its gripping story ... like how you would feel after reading a chapter of Natsume Yuujinchou or Gakuen Babysitters.

The latter half of the manga contains the main story of the series, and it's very good. The manga takes a much more serious approach to events and consequences to various things are far more severe. This leads up to a very satisfying conclusion. The mangaka did a great job foreshadowing the story and tying up loose ends. The ending was complete, and I was happy with the entirety of the series. I didn't expect something this good or serious from what was previously a collection of bubbly, happy short stories.

All in all, the manga was incredibly enjoyable. People who are looking for a solid, progressive storyline may be disappointed or bored with the fire half of the manga, but I think any shoujo reader will enjoy the second half of this manga. People who want some pep in their life will probably enjoy the entirety of the series.

I hate to say this, but in the beginning, Tomoe looked like a girl and I was really confused because of that, but I kept on reading because the idea of the story was interesting (I mean, a man getting chased up a tree by a dog and giving his shrine to the girl that rescues him? Plain weird.). I actually had a bunch of manga I was reading at that time and I was switching between them every chapter, but after I got to the middle of the manga, I completely abandoned the other stuff and started on it. Then I reread the manga a lot and sighed and reread it again...
This manga catches your attention with the weird introduction of the heroine and the new role she finds herself in. The artwork might not be great in beginning, but it really improves a lot. The characters develop well too. The whole concept of this manga is built up through the slow story line and it improves itself a lot. Its kinda typical at first though, and hard to pick up.

I totally love this manga! The relationship between the two main characters are a bit reminiscent of Inuyasha, but I like the female lead in this 100000x better than Kagome and the male lead a little better than Inuyasha as well. The characters in general are a lot morelovable for me.

This storyline is a lot of fun and totally riveting! The art is nice too (yes yes Tomoe is hot ;3 )

Really a must-read!

Read through vol 10 (right now)

and this manga has been worth it. The story is rather episodic, dealing more with character growth and relationships than with a long term plot. Still, Nanami goes from determined to depressed and back again quickly, so she's really quite interesting as a plucky heroine. But, for me, Tomoe is the winner. A sarcastic wild kitsune who has been tamed by Mikage, the original landgod, it's nice to see him change as the manga progresses.
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
I have been especially fond of Vol 10, as we see more of Kuruma's background and we get to see Tomoe struggle with his emotions, since for him it's a battle between duty and affection, something new as of vol 9.

I hope that this will end well, but it's going to be a bit of a toss up, kind of like the end of Inu Yasha, when you weren't sure if Kagome was going to stay or leave. I hope she stays a god, I hope he stays a kitsune, but you know it can't really go that way. Still, maybe the author will surprise me!

The art has a certain charm that makes it fun to read. All the side characters have been interesting, and I look forward to more of them, or when she calls on all of them for help. (Wouldn't that be neat?) Overall, a fun read that has some stereotypical shojo issues, but is still interesting and entertaining.
