I love Eyeshield, I think it's funny and hilariously unrealistic. Artimidorus' review was about right I think, except I'm going to give it a 10 because I enjoy it so much. The art is kind of great too.
Maybe I think it's so incredible because I read it at the same time as -shudders- Rosario+Vampire. I think that could have made anything look good.
Although I think the racism of the NASA coach may have leaked into everybody who talks about Panther, because every comment about him is followed up with "as only a black man can". I mean even when he's being talked about it's "Panther the black man".
It just seemed a little... unneccessary alot of the time.

But anyway, I love Eyeshield and it's a definite 10. Hope it ends soon though... I mean the world cup really is just dragging it out.

Eyeshield 21 is one of those mangas that you shouldn't miss reading. The characters are lovable especially Hiruma (lolx) and if your into something with action and humour then this is the manga your looking for. It's really good.

Although the moves are somewhat unrealistic because of the art, they are real and used in football. Glad to know a Mangaka who knows his stuff!

I usually hate sports mangas (or any other manga that tries to take some normal activity and make it "entertaining"; cooking and medical mangas come to mind). The ones that are somewhat true to the sport often find themselves without anything interesting to keep readers hooked. And then there's the ones that like to dress up the mundane as intense and dramatic, and contort every minor detail of the sport into some ridiculous magical ability or technique (e.g. PoT).

So when ES21 started, I had mixed feelings. It started out all right - a bit of slapstick comedy kept things light and made the silly aspects just that, and not to be taken seriously. The actual football details were a bit off sometimes (sometimes due to the scanslation), but the fact that it didn't take itself so seriously made things easier to swallow. As time went on, however, things began to take a turn for the worse. With each new challenge came a new gimmick, and it wasn't long before all reasonable gimmicks were exhausted. Magical moves began to appear, and eventually, much like Yakitate, the line between funny and stupid was nothing more than a smudge in the rear view mirror. No, it's not as bad as PoT yet, but at this rate, it's only a matter of time.

Was it realistic? Absolutely not. Its more realistic than PoT but your insane if you thought you would find a realistic sports manga. If you want to read or watch football thats what the NFL is for.

That said, this is one of my all-time favorite mangas. I like underdog stories, and I really hope they do a sequel with Enma University.

But if i had to come up with one thing i hated about the series it would be the way they portray Americans. I don't know what's up with the author but he likes to make Americans cocky and racist as shit. Not saying there arent a few people like that somewhere, but he takes it over the top. They make it seem like Panther only has his skills cause hes black too.

yup i really enjoy this manga, even tho i was skeptical at first looking at this since i dont actually watch football on tv (i lose interest in it fast). so i as like hmmm... should i read it? so i was like ok i might as well, read it and i was like whoa! i really liked it, its weird with all of the moves tho i mean the mangaka wrote like 1 chapter worth about 1 second in the game, or it think it was .1 or .01 second, i dont remember but yah, i still liked it though
