This manga is not bad but the the problem is...its not good either. It floats somewhere inbetween.Said that, what can you expect? you can expect consistent and very nice art, a good pace at showing action scenes, a somewhat original setting and likable characters. On the contrary the story is progressen really really slow and its not a positive form of slow like in hajime no ippo but rather a negative one. What this manga imo lacks as a shounen title, cause thats what it is, is to put it simply training-progress. we know it and we love it when our favorites go for training, come back stronger and with new techniques. In kekkaishi they do train, they do get one or two new techniques but its not in the least bit satisfactory. You never get the feeling that someone of the main cast ( i mean the boy and the girl) gets remarkable stronger.

The reason this manga isn't popular:

The problem this manga has is that it spends allot of time dealing with character development before moving on to the main story. Additionally many of the main characters are rather similar in appearance (thus the need for early character development to establish differentiation). If you can get past the first volume or two the story picks exponentially until it slumps into a rather standard shounen arc. The story seems to be slowly drawing towards an obvious conclusion but it often does something that makes you seriously consider that it might be deeper than that. I think more so than anything what sets it apart is the emotion it's characters are able to convey and get this, characters are actually killed off! ZOMG! Take a hint; Naruto/Bleach.

Solid development, will become another classic if...

This series has solid development as the characters are carefully written into the plot and there are so many interesting questions about Kasumori, the characters and even the villains. Unlike many other manga, the scenes are well-crafted instead of random scenes splayed across various chapters and pages.

If Yellow Tanabe continues to churn out Kekkaishi with such brilliance, he might one day overtake Kishimoto in terms of popularity.

A 7.0 for now because the beginning was a little rocky and I've yet to read much of the series yet.

i feel like there has been nearly next to zero progress at all.....
but hey, there were some cool scenes! (not many though)
the art is average....the characters boring and the usual, to make it short: Don't start this.
It's not interesting at all and I can't understand why people give this at best more than 8 points.

a shounen manga that stays original

Unlike pretty much every other shounen manga out there which is artificially drawn out and made generic by forceful publishers, Kekkaishi keeps it real. Awesome fights, amazing art, calm pacing, and a small but well-developed cast keep this manga sweet. Buy the awesome Viz editions!

One of my favorite mangas. The storyline is great, characters are awesome, especially Yoshimory who bakes smile (I bake too, so I just love that character).

One of the most unimaginative overrated, bland tasteless mangas out there. I will never understand other peoples fascination with it. The main character kills demons with shrinking boxes of spiritual energy and even the latest chapters fail to show any variation in the combat system. The main character is straight out of a final fantasy (talentless with no distinguishing features) and the story stands out as much as the artwork and the characters. I'm being generous by giving it a 7.

Wow, I don't quite know where to begin. After hearing all these good things about this manga and reading 16 chapters, I have to say that I am extremely disappointed. For the first five chapters, I was beyond bored but, I somehow managed to muscle my way through, hoping to see what made this series so appealing to others. But, to no avail. Ten chapters later, the story is still bland and repetitive.

Let me summarize what EVERY single chapter has been thus far:

1. Yoshimori, the male lead, pesters his secret crush (who is extremely cliche: childhood friend, next door neighbor, perfect student, idol of many male students, etc...) on the way to school.

2. Yoshimori sleeps in class, the teacher annoys him to open his book but he doesn't care. The author then uses his classmates to spit out a page or two of nonsensical dialogue and then the school day ends.

3. Both the main characters fight the monsters. Monsters are poorly designed and fights could not be blander because the heroes use the same attacks/skills EVERY SINGLE TIME (rasengan, anyone?).

4. Male lead goes home to sleep or make a castle made of cake or candy. (Apparently, it's the main character's passion/dream to make a castle of candy.)

5. Yoshimori wakes up to his stupid grandfather who is annoying, they fight over breakfast.

6. Repeat.

If you're looking for a plotless manga that has poor character design and uses Japanese religion/spirits as a base, then this manga is for you.
