Season 1= Good, Season 2= Dropped
by strixflash

Rating: 5.0  / 10.0
Tower of God started out good with an interesting premise, a good cast (most of them pretty generic) and some creative tests/games. There are times you might draw comparison with Hunter x Hunter or some RPG games but most of the time it standed out on its own.

It's not original or even unique in world building (contrary to what blind fans claim) as ToG borrows most of the world building elements from other works but that's not bad if it's done well.

But the second season has been disappointing. Author has dragged many arcs in the second season maybe thanks to the popularity of Season 1. The tests are boring & they are not creative at all like Season 1. Many of the characters are flat & boring, and sadly the main character (Baam/Viole) still remains the same unidimension shonen idiot (the generic protagonist who has a heart of gold but brainless fool). I don't understand how author claims that tower is a world not for those who are afraid of shedding blood ~_~ Baam has easy time (without shedding blood) due to plot armor. Author wants us to believe Baam is suffering but not really.

There are battles which are dragged on for many chapters, the fights are boring to be honest. The most important part is that most of the battles are not even important to the series...author draws them just to drag the series.

Tower of God was one of my favorite series during its Season 1 despite the main character's generic & flat personality. But Season 2 has ruined it for me. Author seriously needs to stop wasting time on unnecessary things (especially taking more than 30-40 chapters which is terrible).

In short, Tower of God doesn't deserve such high rating.

Baam, his conflict, and his great adventure brought by his willful determination to resolve the conflict
by Sherinz92

Rating: 9.0  / 10.0
Very good and in-depth for a shounen manga.

People seems to not consider the fact that Rachel is the very first light of Baam's life. The life that he is enjoying right now and the life that he had been living previously in the dark cold cave, it was all thanks to Rachel.

Its true that Baam is in denial right now in regards to Rachel, but what he needed from Rachel is not to imprison Rachel or anything, he just want an explanation.. a closure to the psychological conflict that he had, the very first one at that.

Furthermore, Baam is not a machine that could take a certain folder named 'Rachel' and shift-delete the folder out of his mind, be real please

Went from really good to really bad

This comic used to be really good. However, it became too ambitious for its own good and the author can't seem to flesh details out properly. Furthermore, he's really stingy on details and withholds too much and I'm talking about Baam and Rachel!

A long time ago, the plot between them should've been resolved. If it wasn't resolved, then why? But the author remains silent and refuses to dish a single detail. Instead, he ruins the plot completely by making Rachel a troll character, over actually telling us anything that could advance Baam's character. Instead, Baam remains a crazed stalker who stays forever the same. Same goes for Rachel 'cos she could've been a worthy and interesting opponent who actually advances Baam's background story (And vice versa for Baam to develop her). But SIU made us hate her with a vengeance so I don't think there's a chance she'll ever be accepted by the fans.

But wait! Rachel and Baam aren't the only problems. Because SIU refuses to use much narration, so he's forced to dedicate mountains of panels just to write out the damn dialogue. Not to mention, the plot gets really confusing due to the severe lack of details. If you also add in the fact SIU took 3 or more years just to develop Floor 2, only to whizz past multiple floors and not even bother to explain much, it's a real sinker. Throw in too, that he likes to use characters like Parakewl just to "reset" the plot or action, to whatever he wants and all the fun + joy in predicting the plot is gone.

Well apparently TOG runs in author's head and he knows all and expects us to know it all as well. Too bad readers are leaving by the droves.

How to ruin a great series
by Kuranz

I really don't understand how the author could fail so badly in season 2. Season 1 was excellent, but then somehow after a short break, it loses its dark grittiness, the mystery of characters' backgrounds, and pretty much any semblance of storytelling.

If anyone can contact the author in Korean, I suspect plenty of readers want to sign a petition for him to delete all of season 2 and redo.

In summary:

Season 1 - Read it!

Season 2 - Drop it fast before it leaves a horrible aftertaste. I know it's tempting to continue in hopes that it's "decent." Don't.

Its trying too hard to be COOL

After a good world building till the workshop arc, it suddenly gone down the drain. One of the best parts of first season was how there were lot of mysteries and slowly one after another was reveled to make a coherent plot all the while being compact and spot on. But now its just one battle after another and one game after another, and how protagonists outwits the enemies in a close call.

Introducing too many characters without any purpose isnt helping the plot either, its making the whole thing shallow. Instead of introducing so many characters how about improving the personalities of already existing characters. Bam stays as the bum he was in the beginning still chasing rachel, koon is the same cool guy he always was and rak is a comedy sidekick, hwa ryun is well.. a guide who does nothing but guide, as well as various other characters either someone from past who just suddenly pop into the story and show their awesome new powers they got in the time they were out. or some random top D class rankers who are hundreds of years old still being D rankers, who knows what they were doing all this time.

(searching for roen? LoL)

The thing thats been bugging me the most as of late is these frigging lame explanations behind those supposedly amazing powers -
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
whats with that haoqin and his many in one body, souls and stuff. voldmort's follower?
These are forced and lame, nothing like they were in season 1.

I'm just leaving the rating 8/10 in hopes that this would redeem itself after this arc. But my hopes are slim. As for this arc's score its 1/10.

Author Forgot Their Own Story?

I really loved the beginning. Mysterious, intriguing, adventure and did I mention very mysterious? This author really knows how to create an interesting world with its' own rules. You really get into it, eager to get up the tower, because the story is moving at a good pace and a lot of things are happening. You get villains that you really start to hate, You get a lot of twists that go back and forth, and it gets kinda unbelievable but it's still good... Even though the author leaves some questions unanswered, you forgive them because you think it'll be answered later...But I think the author forgot about those questions. It feels like the author had a good idea, but didn't know where they really wanted to take it. I doubt they know how they want to end it. I think there are supposed to be (100 floors? Someone correct me if I'm wrong), but it seems like every floor there's something that builds up the drama but there's very little substance. Good guys don't always win but they never really lose. MC's and villains are becoming very OP already and they're somewhere around the 30th floor. What about the other 70 floors? The people who have reached the top, are they supposed to be gods? My biggest peeve is that the story has been moving at a snail's pace, with the author adding a lot of unnecessary drama and failed epicness to try to bulk it up.

Magnificent at first, declining gradually...

This is subjective me scored based on my experience reading.

Season 1 = Magnificent (10.0)

Season 2 = Meh (1.0)

(10+1.0)/2 = 5.5

After reading through the 2nd season, it just got worse. I think it'd better ended before falling apart.

I might change my opinion if it gets better...

Author is pulling a Berserk on us
by Jeshua

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
Rachel = Griffith: walking the path of corruption to reach her goals;
25th Baam = Guts: would love a calm life, but keeps getting dragged into sh*t for trying to reach Rachel, even after she declares her disdain for him.

World building doesn't mean a thing when the story moves at a snail pace...

The dialogue became cringeworthy by season 2 (you end up reading people repeat the same sentence 5 times each chapter, every chapter)...

Character development is nonexistent - powering up doesn't count.

... I want to see where it is going,
but one Berserk - incomplete and roundabout, even if people consider it a masterpiece - is enough, I don't need another one. My rating (7.3) is mostly for Part 1, as Part 2 would deserve a (3.1) by itself.

Update (v.2 c.167): this loses another 0.5 from me. The author just screwed his MC's personality.

I don't know exactly where the series went wrong for me. I didn't love the first season, it had so many similarities to this particular manga. Some of the characters were even almost carbon copies, but I didn't mind it much. I liked the "magic system" and the idea of going through several levels to reach the top of the tower. I really appreciated the little surprise about Rachel SIU gave at the end. Overall it was enjoyable and interesting.

I don't really care about the art. I have no complaints I've always loved good stories even without visuals. I appreciated the little afterword/company profile at the end of some of the chapters. I liked that the author really put some thought into how he envisioned the ToG world is. His world building is well thought-out though there are a few holes but it's a nonissue. I suspect he likes to fill those in as the story goes. However...

The dialogue and plot development had never been A class but when the Second Season started and especially now at the Hell Train Arc...I literally cringed at the horrible dialogue. It felt like I was reading another manhwa. The conversations were too...awkward and horribly arranged. The way the plot was unfolding was a little pushed... I can't explain really explain it well but I had to skip some parts and it pains me to do that since ToG is heavy on the little details.

Im not gonna give up on this though. It's an interesting world and I like the author's work ethics. I do hope he follows his original storyline more closely than the changes he introduced to answer his fanbase.
