No real direction until it is too late

Butsu Zone is a manga that really doesn't have too much going for it. There are many characters introduced that play no part in the story, there are plot points that end up going nowhere, and it doesn't even get slightly interesting until it is too late. Aside from the Buddhist mythology being a potential point of interest, there is no real hook for the reader. The plot only gets ever so slightly interesting over halfway through this story; but seeing as it is so short, you won't have to invest too much of your time to get there. This manga almost feels like a proto-Shaman King, with characters, themes and designs that would go on to be more fleshed out in the author's future work.
I hate to put it so bluntly, but I can see why this manga was axed, there is no initial hook, and the art, while not bad, feels like Hiyoruki Takei has not fully come into his own style yet. Slightly worth reading to see some of the origins for ideas that were better executed in Shaman King, but as a stand alone story, I can't say it has any of the makings of a fun story.
