Description
From JShoujo Scans
"A mermaid will fall in love with the first human she sees."
Shiina is your average grade 8 girl----that is, except for her height, which makes her tower over the other people in her class. She's never met anyone SHE had to look up to...until a young male teacher begins teaching at her school. Because of his good looks and easy demeanor though, the other girls in her grade have turned him into the resident school idol, and there's little chance of him ever noticing her.
That all changes one day when they end up in the same train during rush hour. She's surprised to find that... More...

But, I just don't like this. I'm not really fond of the characters, and how they act...maybe it's just not my taste.
A bit on the fence..

I love reading student-teacher (older male, younger female - within reason) manga. This one doesn't quite go to the top of my list, but it was an "okay" read nonetheless.
I'd like to point out though, that nothing much really develops from the first chapter until like...the 3rd to the last chapter. For me, it was a little lacking in the expression department (perhaps in the way the art was drawn) though I guess that "lack" made the story close to being sort of realistic. It didn't have the depth that I was looking for, in words or drawing, it actually made me think that their relationship was quite superficial. I felt that it was missing something, a more "adult" conversation perhaps? Thoughts, philosophy, etc.
I don't think the heroine had any redeeming qualities, and the teacher was a little too childish,

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
it was a little difficult to believe that he even had a relationship with that other woman
(perhaps that's what made them quite a match? Idk). One of the Better Teacher/Student Manga

Shiina is not like the other shojo heroines- Clumsy, annoying, and overly girly. She is portrayed in a more realistic way, definitely not the overly exaggerated characteristics that have become so common.
Kawano-sensei isn't one of those teachers who are okay with falling for a student from day one. He actually had to emotionally wrestle himself a bit (you can see a certain change in his attitude towards Shiina later on)).
The romance isn't rushed or forced. Which is, by the way, AMAZING for a student/teacher manga.
And then the art. Others may say that it's bad art, but honestly, I think the art shouldn't matter all that much. I mean, it's superficial to not read something because of the art. You might miss out on something truly wonderful.

There is something about this manga that irritates me and truly grosses me out. Maybe it's the student-teacher relationship or the fact that there are girls like this out there. I'm just hoping that the girl becomes smarter - because as it is now; she kinda dumb and naive!
Hopefully with the right ending and development, this story will turn out really good :-)

Terrible artwork, so sorry, but that's what I see...
Hmm, just one chap though, maybe it'll develop... No, it MUST develop.
One chap, and nothing special from the story yet

and then two years ahead I read this manga again because the status is End...
And when I headed to MU to check it as completed, turned out I've commented...
hmm... I think some parts are interesting, won't spoil it though. Overall, IMHO, just something that you expect to see from a shoujo themed student-teacher relationship in which the girl is a teenager and the teacher... well, tried to be decent adult... What is it that makes Umi no Teppen different from other series with the same theme? Dunno, nothing comes to mind... But yeah, agree with kk99aa's comment above, nothing is exaggerated the way modern manga does. There's drama, but not that fluctuative, makes it feel kinda refreshing... Btw, the twist about her friend in the end... I like it...
