Just a repetitive cycle

This manga doesn't progress at all. It's like the author just recycles the text and changes the background in each new release. Not worth the time, but I already started it so I want to finish it.

PLOTHOLES
by Hyoukami

Rating: 3.0  / 10.0
The lethal amount of plotholes in this series is just insane. Come clean for once and this unnecessary spiral of bullsh1ttery would just end in 2 volumes. And talking about romantic moment in (supposedly) romance manga... c'mon now. Just... Just ... Can you just not trying to fry bullshit such as helping a drowning girl = romantic moment. That's not fr1ckin romance, that's just normal human decency. And no one is even trying to help (for the sake of plot I assume) so suddenly helping someone drowning is such a prince charming move now? Jesus Christ.

We are at 200 chapters and the plot just repeats itself, there has been no progress at all for like 70 chapters, just pure money milking.

Cringe-a-girlfriend

There should be a special place in hell for authors who purposely avoid resolution.

Among of the dozens of romance manga I've come across in the past decade, this one is the most pointless and cringeworthy among all of them. All the bad parts of Nisekoi (without any of the good comedic parts) are amplified 100x in this manga. The author just keeps pumping out chapter after chapter with zero progress. The characters are purposely jilting us of any resolution.

It's so frustrating reading this, both because the MC is incorrigibly awkward and unlikeable, and because there's no resolution. I couldn't even recommend it to the most masochistic of romance manga readers.

i can't help but rate it highly

i absolutely love the art. suspend your disbelief as if it's an isekai or something and the story is decent. sure there are dated tropes but they're used reasonably well in service of an okay plot, and every time I start to get annoyed at kazuya or ruka or whoever there's an absolutely killer outfit on the page to distract me.

kazuya's punk/schlub aesthetic is fun as heck.
chizuru's outfits are always on point, excellent variety and composition.
the other ladies have great outfits also, often as well put together as chizuru but there can only be one or something to that effect.
grandma is snappy, i want her as my new gran.
i guess there are other male characters? who wear clothes? cool.

long story short i don't really care how cliched the story is as long as the art is this much fun and the twists are laid out in a competent way. tbqh if this story was just from chizuru's (and other women's) perspective and left out any kazuya development it'd probably actually be quite solid and deserve my inflated rating for real.

Relationships Must have been easy for people poorly rating :)

Sorry, the MC is pretty relatable to a ton of guys. Coming from a guy who literally broke my back to do anything I could for a girl I liked, and then locked up in a friend zone, this was a blast of nostalgia and hilarity for me. That may or may not be what the writer was aiming at, but there are tons of people who can take something away from this story.

Some of it can be a little cringey sure. Ruka's definitely not my favorite character but she has a purpose in order for entertainment value.

Without spoilers, I can honestly say though. If you are a guy (yeah guys can definitely enjoy this stuff, I sure did!), who has been caught in those crazy moments where everything just seems to go wrong every time you were there for a girl when she cried, or walked her home, or carried her groceries, or stayed with them because they didn't have anyone else at the time, then this is a great story to follow. I'm at the end at 155 right now, and personally can't wait to see where things go!

I like the thing.

I should start off by saying that this thing is a shonen. If you're too in-depth with regards to minor details and other similar thingamabobs, I'm not so sure you're going to like it. However, if you're similar to the MC's situation, you can also feel dread the further you read into it.

Characters are given some spotlight here and there, but it's mainly just Chizuru and Kazuya. Everyone saying that Kazuya's actions aren't justified and insisting on why she's still dating Chizuru even after he got in a relationship with Ruka probably doesn't understand the situation. I've read up to the furthest chapter released in this time(September 8), and I can absolutely understand what everyone is saying about the series. Sure, it has some flaws here and there, but I can't deny that I really got hooked in the story.

I can't come to like the male and female lead.

To be honest, I don't really like it at the beginning. Even now, I still don't really like this manga. I mean, I even skipped so many chapters here and began reading again at the time when Kazuya was preparing the script and funding for the movie. 😅 I read this for the sake of finishing this manga since I have started it.

I appreciate Kazuya for his honesty, compassion, and sincere feeling to help Chizuru. He worked really hard for that film even though he didn't know anything about film production previously. I respect him for this. But I don't like him since he feels like the type of guy who can't make clear decision to reject a girl he's actually not interested to. Or did he unconciously just enjoy being around women? Anyway, in my mothertounge, I call Kazuya as a "plin plan" guy because of this.

And I don't like Chizuru. I have found some hard-hearted women as the female lead in other manga, but Chizuru is really exceptional. Even after 100+ chapters including the recent ones, she still closed her heart and being stubborn. She was obviously sad, need support and/or help, but she always put the strong woman cover. Gee.

And even after all what Kazuya did for her, even if deep down she felt thankful and happy for it, she always act as stubborn as ever. What did she think Kazuya is? 😅

I often get impatient observing this couple. Honestly, I can't sympathize with the male and female lead. At all.

However, to be a bit fair for this manga, I actually liked the concept a little bit. I often hear about the rental girlfriend profession in videos about Japan I watched, but to make this into a focus in a manga was interesting.

I'll give it 7, I think.

A few spoilers so read at your own risk: BORING READ
by LUEser

Rating: 3.0  / 10.0
I thought the idea of a "rental girlfriend" seemed quirky and interesting, and if the story progresses right, this would have been a very fun read...and it was...

The artwork is definitely very fun and creative. The mangaka has definitely done his research in fashion and modern career trends (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t3rKrTehORY, Day in the Life of a Mangaka by Paolo of Reiji Miyajima, the mangaka of this manga), which is something I truly appreciate. However, the characters are not memorable (besides Kazuya's friend Kibe and Umi), quite childish, and can make reading the manga painfully boring.

The problem with this manga (and other romance/drama manga) is that the mangaka ran out of new and creative "drama" to stir the pot and ends up recycling previous plots. So this manga ends up going around in circles multiple times with a new character or updated script but the drama is still generally the same idea. No drama is ever so great that it is hindering yet builds character. Instead, the mangaka creates a lot of little drama that's just more of an annoyance that serves no actual purpose. Eventually, the plot strays and it focuses on Chizuru's dreams of acting but by the time I reached that point, the manga is already so boring that I've stopped investing good time in reading it.

Example dramas that should have been emphasized for more drama:
1. Nanami and her vow to break Kazuya and Chizuru apart. Wouldn't it have been very interesting that the ex-girlfriend who dumped Kazuya is trying to break them apart out of jealousy constantly? I thought this "revenge" was definitely downplayed, and it would've had a more dramatic effect, even if it was out of pettiness. Instead, you only see it here and there, never anything great, but always just generally there.
2. Kazuya's family business. We don't hear about it until in the middle of the story thus far, BUT it was only mentioned briefly a few times. We barely know what it is and why Kazuya rarely talks about it (except that he will probably take over it). We don't know how he or his family feels about it.
3. Both of Kazuya's and Chizuru's social life outside of what we've been reading so far. Kazuya's friends Kibe and Kuri make their own tiny arcs in the manga but right after their role is done, you don't hear from them again. I'm disappointed that I am now reading more about his cosplay neighbor more than about Kazuya's childhood friend Kibe, who I thought was the most real guy I actually liked. Then there's Chizuru who doesn't have much a social life; we know she has friends but she's not close with them. Even one of her customers creating drama would have been a good drama idea.

Example dramas that has been emphasized but shouldn't have been:
1. Ruka's patience for her boyfriend who continues to rent a girlfriend. What idiot allows their boyfriend to continue to rent a girlfriend? And what idiot would make a plot this way😕
2. The grandmothers' constant health scares. And then you learn that it was over something small, which is just a way to change the subject or quickly deter the plot from moving in a specific direction. This has been used multiple times and is honestly getting really old. Pun intended.
3. The grandmothers' expectations of Kazuya and Chizuru's "marriage". I mean seriously, we barely even know WHAT the Kinoshita family business is, let alone the constant talk of him taking over it, and with Chizuru's dreams so big, they really can't expect her to settle.

Hard to empathize
by masayuki
July 23rd, 2020, 2:41am
Rating: 1.0  / 10.0
The premise was interesting, and had a lot of potential. Art is decent, and Chizuru is cool.

However, the MC has the worst personality and its hard to empathize with him. He is narcissistic and selfish, but everything is accepted as if he is justified. It's delusional.

If you read, it requires suspension of belief. I felt my time was wasted. I really wish it could have turned out better.
