With the Meiji Restoration and the abolishment of the Samurai system, the once feared and respected ninja were forced underground, to continue their work in absolute secrecy. In modern times, the descendants of a certain ninja clan have continued their ancestors' legacy by employing the ninja arts in their work as bodyguards for the rich and famous.
Kirio Mikage is the daughter of the CEO of "Shadow Village Company," a private security company that operates as a front for the clan's ninja activities. For as long as she can remember, her father has been training her physically and mentally to be a ninja, drilling their clan's mantra into her head: "Be a shadow." Ever since she was a child, Mikage's only source of comfort and encouragement has been her employer, James G Rod. Rod is a kind, handsome and mysterious British businessman who is using Shadow Village Company's ninjas for his personal security and who, when Mikage was only about 10 years old, requested that she be assigned to complete her apprenticeship as part of his security team. His wife, whom he loved dearly, was Japanese but she and the couple's daughter were killed by Rod's enemies prior to him hiring Shadow Village Company to see to his personal security.
Rod seems to regard Mikage as a stand-in for the daughter he lost, whereas she is half in love with him as the only person who has ever shown her kindness. One day, Rod asks Mikage to let him adopt her and send her to school in Japan like any normal teenage girl, so she can lead a happy life. Mikage is troubled by his offer because of her feelings for him and the fact that the penalty for any ninja who turns their back on the clan is death. But before she can decide, Rod is killed in a bombing. Mikage finds out after his death that, before he was killed, Rod paid Shadow Village Company a sum equal to her entire lifetime's wages in exchange for her freedom from her obligations to the clan. In honor of his memory, Mikage decides to fulfill Rod's wish for her and returns to Japan to attend high school there.

The manga is super confusing. I like strong girls, but I found this whole story very boring. Also the way the manga ended made me feel highly disturbed. Overall, I expected better from Hino Matsuri. She used to make such good manga, but that was before Vampire Knight. Vampire Knight was good before volume 6, and then it just became a disaster. I guess I shouldn't get my hopes up with this Mangaka anymore.

This manga had good potential in the beginning but it went downhill as it felt rushed and ridiculous.
So good luck if you want to read this. The only props I will give is that there are very good characters. Just wasted in the twisted story. It felt like nothing is resolved and the ending weren't that good either.

In the end it's still a harem love between Yuki, Zero and Kaname.

still not sure whether Yuki truly loves Kaname? Or she only felt indebted to him? to me it felt like the one she truly loved is Zero. but she couldn't leave Kaname behind because she's bond to be with Kaname ever since birth, so it's hard for her to let go of him. but I feel that it's unfair to both Zero and Kaname. Yuki must make up her mind and just pick one. This manga ended with a love triangle story because the author is trying to satisfy all the readers.

This really could have been a great manga I loved the plot and characters, heroine was interesting and quirky but for a reason. Unfortunately it's is rushed at the end and a lot isn't resolved which is always a buzz kill.

I liked it ... especially the age gap. But the romance wasn't really resolved, in my opinion. I was hoping for a little extra. Also the relationship between her and the other students was pretty much ignored later on. I was left feeling very confused at the end.

The premise started very interestingly. The art is really nice, and I was very curious what would happen! Then... Blegh... The characters lose their depth very quickly. I don't know if the author ran out of ideas, or if the series was axed so they decided to rush the hell out of the ending. I've never seen such choppy story work, the final chapter in particular had several fast-forward style pages, where what should take 10 pages was put into four images on one page @.@ I would have enjoyed it a lot more if they hadn't rushed the ending.

The hell did I read...
The story was damn confusing and all over the place. The "actings" of the characters were wooden. And it was just... I don't know what I just read or how to feel about it. It's just... the hell...

Sometimes the plot is just too serious that makes me shy away from this series. But sometimes, it has cute moments. So, I'm really unsure whether I continue or not. The storyline is interesting, but I have a hard problem with it's theme that is dark and serious. Afterall, politic isn't my cup of tea.
The art is pretty, as expected of Hino Matsuri. I can't rant about it, I just want to stare and imprint the character to my mind.
Edit : It took me by surprise when it says finished at 2 volumes only. I thought it'll be more. An open ending, kinda rushed too.

Is it the female or the male lead that falls in love first? Lol. Anyhow, I did read this, and so far, it's meh, not too exciting in my opinion. I can tell that there is a deepish plot coming and all, due to its intrigue, but I'm personally not interested at all. Read, especially if you are a fan of VK (it has that vibe a little), or if you're bored, perhaps you may like it a lot more than I do.

If you're looking for Vampire Knight 2, this is not it. The setting and character designs are distinctly different, and this story uses the "new art style" that Hino developed at the very end of VK's run: a clean simplistic style with mostly white backgrounds. In the manga world, this new style certainly isn't bad. However, when you compare it to her old style: lushly detailed costumes and backgrounds, it feels like a crying shame that she replaced it with a style so common and plain :/
