First, I would recommend reading this LN it's good.
Second, there are a lot of complaints about how the author writes about women, or how he stereotypes characters, or how there many things pulled from anime and gaming. Remember that this story is written (mostly) from the perspective of the main character and that the main character was a shitty NEET (his own words) for the majority of his life. Rudi describes many of the things in the world as through the lens of his past life. Things like adventuring Rudi will describe in RPG terms, while Paul looked at it as mercenary work. I like how the author uses the main character's past to influence his perception of the world, and how it contrasts with the other character's views. As the series continues you can read a shift in Rudi's perspective over time.

Here are a few things that I liked about this story.

-The main character while holding enormous potential has to work very hard for a long period of time to grow stronger. In this world no matter how "strong" you are if you are not skillful you will still lose.

-The main character isn't perfect. This guy isn't out to be a hero he's just trying to live a better life than the one he had before being reincarnated. In the end he's pretty likable, he's aware hes not perfect and he just wants to protect his family.

-The relationships make sense (not just the love interests but those are what I'm going to talk about here, as they are more people seem to care about them). This story had the only "harem" situation that actually seemed realistic to me. It wasn't an "oh I met you for 5 minutes when I was a kid and fell in love with you" kind of thing. Every relationship was built over a number of years of close proximity with that individual away from any other love interest. Not only that but they followed through. It wasn't a kiss on the last chapter kind of thing. The MC got married had a few kids, cheated (again not the perfect guy) got a second wife, etc.

I have also notices this story is getting a lot of flack over being "creepy". I'm not sure I agree. I mean the MC starts out as a bit of the pervert and to an extent stays that way. But I honestly enjoyed this part of the story. It made him a little more realistic and (to me) likable. Also his perversion tones down a bit after the first few volumes while never going completely away.

In the end this story has an MC that is strong but not overpowered. They have to work hard and train for a number of years to become strong but are still far from the top. The MC is more individualist and cares about his family and friends, hes not out to save the world and he follows up on his love interests. I enjoyed it, I think you might as well.

doesn't matter what happen as the story progressing I'll rated it full mark. great plot.. most of all.. I love how the main character because he uses his brain/logic more as ordinary guy wanted to lived his second life to the fullest more rather than uses something so cliche e.g(I cant hit because she is a women something like that). Anyway relax and enjoy the humor don't think much about the delicate stuff cant do that cant do this. Because this VS has its own charm that can blown your mind OFF! biggrin. ps. not for ppl with closed minded though.

I've been on-off reading this to and from school on my bus every day. It's been a decently enjoyable. The story generally stayed that way, for the beginning at least. In the latter volumes of the book, to put it bluntly, sh*t hits the fan.

Not trying to spoil no too much, but what happens is a plot-twist without much foreshadowing, which I generally don't like. But the actual potential plot brought on by this plot twist more than makes up for the unfairness of it being sprung up out of the blue.

Damn this novel is killing me, gotta stop pulling all nighters to read and finish my work, think the last time i was so engrossed was vinland saga

I'm usually a manga fan and got a referral but i was surprised by how interesting the story was. I guess its rare to find a protagonist who's an ordinary guy with no ambition dealing with stuff in an anime-ish world? mushoku tensei feels like an anime or manga got turned into a reality drama lol

The plot is awesome and the pacing is smooth. It starts off really slow and doesnt rush anything. its built very patiently until it just explodes in the later volumes. There are some chapters just about life, but thats just the calm before the storm biggrin

There's lots of comedy and some tearjerking tragic moments too

I just have one big problem: cant decide between charmander, squirtle and bulbasaur ;_;

finally up to date, cant wait for new volume

this light novel was a surprise, was getting kind of jaded about the general quality of novels since there's just so much cringeworthy stuff out there

then BAM MUSHOKU TENSEI! its like a treasure hoard of interesting dialogue and epic fantasy.

in a similar way to Re:Monster, the MC is reborn as a child but hes not an orc bent on eating his way to max super saiyan 4. the guy actually has a personality that you can believe in with ordinary emotions. the new world is waaaay entrenched in japanese culture and its funny how he keeps trying to separate japanese logic from his new life. the action parts are also written very well without over exaggeration, the magic and swords system + monsters etc. mesh well together without making your brain ache with contradictions

the romance is a teenage wet dream come true, but the somewhat unique thing is the author makes the harem actually work. the girls have personality rather than being what the author calls "satellites" revolving around the MC, they develop a history together and for the longest time, its just teasing and nothing happens. the slow moving and gradual merging of their lives is gratifying if you enjoy that type of romance.

however if you're a milis believer (aka one love one life), stay away. you will be irreversibly seduced by the fatal temptation of "3P" you have been warned!

but best of all, there's a lot of semi life lessons mixed into many chapters that give you a feeling of what family and friendship mean, especially to someone like the MC who was secluded. it feels like the author is often writing with his targeted audience being NEETs. the mc says all of it from a non judgemental tone, so you're free to take from it what you will

read it you'll love it, but check the tags first though (HAREM + MATURE + SEINEN). i dunno how so many reviewers come to throw dirt because they can't stand a pedo joke, don't like harems or like the guy below, want a superhero MC who has to be the strongest in a world where the plot moves linearly (beat bad guy 1, beat bad guy 2 who's stronger, beat the gods and so on until you wonder what's the point of even reading)

The 30 year old NEET thing is mostly there for very very amusing perspective and commentary during the actual story in which it is a bona fide high-fantasy novel, and a very good one at that.

Also has the most satisfying harem part of any light novel yet, thanks to perverted (at the level any healthy male like) but level-headed/mature/realistic protagonist and the world's setting/culture, it spare you from the usual "high-school" harem "romance" bs antics.

@astral100
Go read some shounen sh- instead (note, I like shoune sh- too since I know what I'm looking for in a genre).

As the answer for your "question", do you even read this? How could he, a 7 year old boy trained under advanced level ineffective teacher, win against a highly aggressive 9 yo "girl" trained even earlier by a sword king? In the first place, why the heck would he attack the girl he's supposed to teach, sure he could flood or send some rock bullet her way but what do you think that would accomplish just for the sake of being "badass"?

Again, go read some shounen sh- instead, preferably the truly sh--y one like FT since lots of shounen incorporate sound logic nowadays and you may found that not "badass" enough too.

This is not a story about dungeon, fantasy, or magic
It's all about Rudeus, kind of like a diary of Rudeus Greyrat
(+) Why I like this series
1. The way author narrated this story, It' like we are watching the life of Rudeus, and because of it, I get very attached to the character (how they felt not just their name) especially Eris.
2. From the beginning author knew to where the story ended up, there are 3 Turning Point chapter, it's totally different compare to trolling or neverending story
3. Read and you will know it, how awesome it's.

(-) ....
1. other say MC is smart, I doubt it, it's steoreotypical chara, he totally clueless about Eris's feeling.
2. another cliche and stereotypical MC, again, yeah again, no matter what other did to himself or toward other person around him, he will eventually forgive it in the end. Author should be realistic luke should behe*d. (a bit emotional, anyway not makes sense for me)
3. He is closet pervert, well it's common in LN, so it does not make differences. at least he does not horny over norn, like typical harem that included incest story.
4. Author too focus on romance (actually i'm okay, coz i love Eris), but it will be great, if there is a journey or arc about exploring dungeon, research on world history, means we can see the full fantasy story not a romance in the fantasy setting. I know vol 3 is adventure, but it's only a small fraction, if we see the map that author drew
4. after 19th Vol, the story somewhat rushy, preparation for ending.
5. If author going for romance not adventure, Eris POV should added more, means a lot.

Have to give my 2 cents

I've been using this website for over 10 years and have never bothered to make an account, but I need to give my opinion of this novel.

Besides one glaring flaw, this is an amazing read.

Character development is fluid and feels believable.

Supporting characters who don't immediately befriend the MC, who in other stories would feel insulted or jealous and turn into enemies only to see the error of their ways later in the story after losing a fight, instead have more than one brain cell and either grow up or let it go.

The only real enemies are REAL enemies, not comic relief or plot devices. They have things they want and the MC is getting in their way. They aren't really evil, just on opposing sides.

Back to why I made this comment, the one thing I really think drags this story down is the harem factor. I get that the Japanese are obsessed with almost every underage girl flirting with adults and harems where every pretty girl the MC meets falls in love with him or is at least attracted enough to want to get into his pants, but I was really hoping that wouldn't happen in this novel.

Especially him actually getting away with marrying every female childhood friend he ever had...
Unfortunately it did, so I can only give it a 9/10.

The above turned what could have been a near masterpiece into a just a really good novel.

Finishing these 24 volumes of Web Novel in one week. I feel satisfied, and easily one of the best light novel/web novel besides some VN/LN that I have read. Even though some of the characters are not explained completely till the end, like Nanahoshi, Rudeus' children, etc,.. it's alright since we read the story from the perspective of the main character, Rudeus.

At first, I don't really expect much and even got annoyed by the prologue's main character and decision. But as it got further, I can get the feel of it.

The best character development I have ever read in a light novel. For the story, you had better read it yourself to find it.
