They play tennis...

I've read the first eight volumes that my library had. It was very good and exactly what I would expect from a sports manga. But I probably won't bother to finish reading the series. In the first 8 volumes they played tennis...oh and oh yeah they played tennis, with hey a little more tennis on the side. And well thats all there seemed to be to the series. The story and the characters didn't really seem to be going anywhere. It's not very interesting to read about a bunch of drawn out matches where you see Ryoma win every time with his inhumanly possible abilities. And the rest of the cast also played a bunch of amazingly awesome and unrealistic tennis matches. The circular plot gets old.
So I'm not sure why there is so much hype around PoT, it good but not great. So I am going to assume it is because the characters are so perfect for use in doujinshi. Since they are all amazing, talented and attractive guys who like to play (tennis) with each other-- play with each other a lot.

Well... its entirely unbelievable, and one of those things you have to read at 3am to like, since its so simple. I guess its alright, once you get down to it, but its so.... puffed up, its stupid. I mean, some of those moves defy the laws of physics, not just gravity. XD Some of it is amusing, and I like the main characters personality, but really, its not something I would recommend.

I absolutely adore PoT. My skill on a tennis court extends as far as running around and trying to get the ball back to the other side, so it's sort of motivating to see these kids (even on paper) mastering it so easily.

Characters are clever, I love the artwork, and the stories are pretty entertaining and nice, too. It had me hooked after three chapters, at least :)

I dunno.

I mean on the one hand, it's always nice to root for the seemingly-underdog-character-who's-actually-a-bit-of-a-badass. It does raise very good tension in its tennis matches.

But the utter lack of character development on the part of the main character is disappointing. Also some of the apparently witty retorts and comebacks fall flat on me. I can tell from the characters' reactions that A-san has just been verbally owned by B-san, but I can't for the life of me work out why. The unrealism of it all I can deal with, it's a manga. If I wanted realism, I'd watch Wimbledon, but it pushes it sometimes. Like tennis players literally beating each other bloody with the force of their serves. And sometimes I have trouble telling people apart, such is the art. Average marks from me.

"It's Like Magical Gay Middle School Tennis"

Oh, TeniPuri, you are a strange thing indeed. The review title was what this series was recommended to be on, and at first I thought it was a joke. But no, it really is that, ah, unique.

The tennis took a turn somewhere from being unlikely, to highly unlikely, to THEY CAN FLY AND USE ILLUSIONS AND WHAT THE HELL IS HAPPENING. Seriously. I think part of the reason I like this series is because it is utterly ridiculous. Another perk is that there are so many characters that you are bound to find at least one you like. Personally Ryoma, the main character, is one of the only characters that I actively dislike and I still loved this series. The fandom is also massive, and you can get any type of merchandise you could dream up, for almost any character you want.

It does get repetitive, but it follows the time honoured shounen plot type of enemy is stronger, find enemies weakness, exploit weakness with new skill/weapon/move. Teni Puri never strays far from that structure.

The art is sort of, ah, really interesting I guess. The bodies are fine, but the eyes are terrifyingly badly proportioned, even for manga.

I would recommend it for the lulz, or for the huge yaoi fandom, but don't look for anything fresh or deep in this series.

i haven't read this manga yet so i guess its not appropriate for me to do a review on this but one time i saw my brother watching the anime so i thought that id give it a try so while watching it, i realized that the story is not really that good and the moves are very unrealistic, i dont see what the fuss is all about on this manga. i dont want to compare it to slam dunk because slam dunk is a legend but slam dunk atleast has very realistic moves even though their heights are very questionable. One last thing, i almost forgot to say that im a real world tennis fan and a hardcore Roger Federer fan, with all that said i guess me reading this manga would make me an idiot now would it?

Meh, finished up to chapter 122 in 3 days, then I dropped it.. Same repeating story, new opponent=strong=defeats some good opponents=our hero defeats them, meh.. too much meaningless competitions, but if you exclude these, its a good manga..

Magical, Miraculous, Moronic

I wanted to like this manga. I really did. I normally enjoy sports mangas, even ones whose plots could be recycled with dozens of their bretheren. However this one, for some reason really grates on me. Maybe its because I've played tennis, or because I recently read a far superior tennis manga, but this one is really irritating. With the 'special shots' the dumb and predictable storyline. Yeah, I guess its the special shots that annoy me the most. This is tennis, its not Dragonball. Everytime I read 'Moon shot' 'Snake Shot' 'Twist Serve' I think, wow thats dumb. Then add to this fact, the idea that these kids are playing a single set match, and are getting completely exhausted by this. It makes me wonder, did they train at all? Their stamina is gone after just 1 frickin set? Pathetic! Rather then working on super special miraculous shots, they should go running for a few hours instead. Ah, but that would require some actual intelligence, and we can't have that in a shounen manga.

If you're looking for a great sports manga, keep looking. This definitely does not qualify, however if you're looking for a few hours of mindless drivel, with mediocre artwork and story. And if you're entertained by the endless new special moves that are constantly being pulled out of the authors butt, then go ahead and give this a shot. Its not horrible, just not great.
