9.5/10 satisfying build-up if you catch the subtext

I don't know why there are so many negative comments saying the ending was axed, rushed and did not make sense. The clues are there throughout the entire story from ch 1 that Taichi sees Touma as more than just a best friend. None of these clues are directly mentioned in direct text though and that why many people myself included miss them at first. One of the most glaring incidents was during the horror room during the school festival in which Taichi terrified runs into touma's chest and the image he remembers of from these moments is the view of Touma's chest from a lower perspective. This view is quite intimate and not something someone straight would remember about their best friend. There is also the touma liking aki situation during the early chaps. Why is touma's love interest so important for tachi that he remembers this for years despite not being close at the time? There are so many more, but all of these are shown through the images, the art, the backgrounds (sparkles, dark shades) and sometimes we have to decipher from tachi's cryptic thoughts. None of these are explicitly talked about and so you have to really red though the lines to find out. One other thing is his relationship with futaba was not progressing when they were dating. Both of them were unable to go past holding hands or going to the other's house without blushing profusely. They had so much more progress BEFORE they began dating. There were communicating, they were there for each other during difficult times, they helped each other become better in their own ways. They were amazing as good friends, but I always found their dating period was just going nowhere.

When I first read this series, I was like many others in which I was like huh? how the hell does tachi suddenly end up with touma? After I read other explanations, I went back and reread and found a lot and I mean A LOT of clues imbedded in the art. This is not something you can skim read or rely on the speech bubbles to get everything about the story. You'll be sorely misled if that's what you've been doing.

I do however agree that the way the last chapter was presented was more of a glance at the future rather than a full chapter of what's happening. The panels are bare and mostly shows their surroundings rather than the main characters. I guess it was a choice made by the author to another first-person chapter but we never to get to see touma's happy face so damn you Kaito-san!

This would have been a solid 9/10 for me and I wish the finale was developed. Those last two chapters are just jarring with a hint of "axed" somehow.

Major, absolutely massive spoilers, abandon all hope ye who read further if you haven't already. Seriously.

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
The ending makes little sense. Suddenly the MC is bisexual (earlier in the manga this is suggested, but it stops being hinted at entirely), the lesbian chick is cool with dating guys now despite saying in no uncertain terms she couldn't do it.
The "ML" ending up with some other dude is whatever, that's least dumb thing here. She wasn't really much of a character from start to finish, which I think was intentional, more of a plot device.
These developments have absolutely 0 leadup, and yet worse, 0 payoff, you get a panel where the MC and Touma hold hands showing that they married. That's it. There's precious little to tell you why, and absolutely nothing to tell you how any of this happened. My immediate impression was that this got axed after I read chapter 55.

All 54 chapters before the ending were rendered pointless. A problem that plagues way too many coming of age stories. As someone who was rooting for the gay pairing, the ending still sucked major incalculable sets of donkey balls.
I'd recommend stopping at chapter 54 to avoid what may be one of the most forced endings in manga history. Still not a good ending stopping at 54, but trust me its about 20 astronomical units closer to a good ending than whatever the hell that was.
The start of the manga has good foreshadowing and subtext that hints more or less at the ending. I suspect meddling on the part of the editor because a gay love story wouldn't sell as well, but the author was given autonomy for the ending as pittance for being creatively slapped around.

The rest of the manga is pretty great though. Hence my extremely cringe and tilted rant, I was definitely invested.

By far the more realsitic romance manga ive seen

Manga was really great, like life changing great. What i love about this manga is there are essentially no villians, everyone is just struggling with their own insecurities and trying to deal with the hand they have been given. I usually dont read manga like this, but this manga is the only exception to that rule, and boy this was by far the greatest manga i have read. I would put it in my top ten. It is just that good because of how realistic everything is.

If you are hesistant of reading this like i was, give it a shot. I did and by far this was the greatest manga i have read

My reactions during my reading:

Chapter 31 and 32 are legit my favorite. They talk about friendships and whether it is possible to hold friendships with the opposite sexs. The two characters are like the two arguments to that idea. One being that no, women and men cant be friends, they can only be involve romantically or when they have an ulterior motive. And the other person argues that people can be friends, its just people perception of the two members that causes problems. Read these two chapter and you will see what i mean

Chapter 32, 33,34 my heart bro, i thought i would hate her based on the earlier interaction with mc in the beginning but i just can not hate her. Her struggles are so fucking real
Chapter 31,32,33 all hurt my heart

Chapter 39, holy fuck, my heart,

Chapter 40,41 my gawd

47 almost made me cry

I honestly hated this work. And I think my issues are similar so others I've read, but I also have a different perspective on them.

What this comes down to is it reads like the author got bullied by their publisher.

In the beginning, it is made pretty obvious that Tai is in love with Touma. Like, OBVIOUS. Sure he is also envious of Touma, but that's in addition to his love. The rest of my comments are heavily spoilers but I recommend reading them before reading the series anyway.

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
So as I was saying. It's obvious. He doesn't like Futaba because she is meek and reminds him of himself. He loves Touma but is envious of all that Touma has.
But then you hit a chapter where it seems like the publisher came to the author and said "Look, we can't have a gay romance story, it won't run long."
At which point, suddenly we get reference to Tai actually almost hating Touma and suddenly loving Futaba. It's a complete 180 and it comes out of nowhere.
Futaba herself is a horrible character. Not because she's meek or clumsy or a typical shoujo heroine trope, but because SHE DOESNT LOVE EITHER OF THEM.
We're basically told to believe she loves Tai, but that's not what happened. She admires Touma and she's friends with Tai. For some reason she decides she needs to be romantic with one of them, and forces herself to choose one to date, and decides she'd rather date Tai.
There's no love there. He has equal standing in her eyes as her friend (whose name I can't even remember but it begins with M so I'll call her that) which is shown with the whole university plotline.
Yet she doesn't want to lose his love so when shit hits the fan she decides to stay with him. Even that wasn't because she liked him too much to give him up, it's because Touma told her to stay with Tai.

The argument with Touma's friends and the whole discussion that takes place in their room is sickening as well. Yes, there are two sides to a story, but trying to justify an assault due to bigotry is ridiculous. I've been assaulted a lot in my life and I've never once decided that all men are like that and disgusting. You can't say that's a justifiable stance to take ESPECIALLY when you're supposed to be close friends with the person.
By the time we get to the ending, I wanted to erase this whole manga from my memory.
Even though it's labelled shounen ai, by the end all non hetero relationships have been completely erased from the work.
M states early on that she tries to be normal and date men but she can't make it work, she only likes women. But by the end she is somehow doing well and is married to a man.
Despite making the Touma character be the only one to truly show love throughout the series, we not only get deprived of seeing him in the ending, we don't even really get to see his happiness AT ALL.
We get a picture of two wedded hands holding each other. Ok great. They got married. Touma gets no lines, no kiss, no acknowledgement. Just a held hand.
This after we're told he had to put up with the 1 year shown, the 2 years Tai and Futaba dated afterwards, and the 5 years of Tau "not being over Futaba". AT LEAST 8 YEARS he had to watch Tai pine over Futaba when neither actually loved each other.
Not only that but the author dared to write a line like "it was obvious Tai liked you from the start". What? No! Tai was uninterested, malicious, and pushing Futaba toward Touma while obviously loving Touma at the start. GRAAAAH.

Its a classic example of a writing just writing "yes x loves y" instead of showing it with any actions or gestures or anything meaningful. It was a complete waste of time reading this.

Honestly, it is NOT a shounen ai. Its not even suppostive of the LGBTQA+ community. It doesn't depict them "struggling with their identity" but rather erases Tai's and M's and punishes Touma's.

It was extremely disappointing and a huge waste of time to read.

Best romance manga i've ever read
I think this Kaito guy has a really extraordinary talent

I couldn't possibly count how many times i cried while reading this manga... (maybe more than when i read kimi ni todoke...!)

About the ending, to me, it's just the author's choice, i feel like there's no liking or disliking it, it just made me think about what this whole manga is all about... life can be disappointing sometimes... i would have wanted to see another ending to be honest, but the spirit of this manga teaches me to take it as it is, as someone else's choice, as a turn of events, or as a really great love story, and it really did make me think a lot about life afterwards,

So i say congrats to Kaito-sensei, I think that's an awesome masterpiece you gave us, THANKS !

A Literary Masterpiece that Transcends Cliches

I guess reading so much cliched and unrealistic BL, yaoi, and shojo has really rotted the brains of a lot of readers, huh?

This manga plays with and subverts the common tropes of shojo. Who gets hurt trying to save Ichinose? Who is the childhood friend of Ichinose? Who walks around the cultural festival with Ichinose? Who knows the heart and soul of Ichinose? The fact is that Ichinose ends up with the character that loves and understands him the most.

This is a painfully realistic depiction of characters questioning sexuality and gender roles and struggling with feelings they do not understand. The ending DOES NOT come out of nowhere. It is not rushed. Did readers even pay attention to the nuances? The way Ichinose looks at Touma? Go back to the haunted house scene and see the panel in which his hands touch Touma’s chest. It’s at this moment that he becomes sexually aware of Touma for the first time. It’s a parallel to the scene in which he holds onto Touma on the train, but intensifies the sexual tension.

It should be pointed out that Ichinose is NEVER repulsed by Touma’s admission of love.

The time jump makes sense, thematically and narratively. Do we really need to see the moment in which Ichinose expresses his love for Touma blatantly? That only happens in cliched shojo and BL. There are several scenes wherein Ichinose acknowledges that his feelings for Touma might be more than friendship. Go back to the scene wherein he opens the charm. It’s just that Ichinose’s feelings are not spelled out. This manga does not treat its readers as children, thankfully.

If you want to see a scene wherein Ichinose says he also loves Touma, then just go back to your cliched shojo and BL. This is not what this manga is about. This manga is about the many unexpected paths that we take in life, and how life and people never turn out in the ways we expect them to be.

This is extremely well written manga.. until you hit the ending. The ending really does what it's supposed to do but in such a bad way you wonder how did this even happen? I'm not sure if the last chapters were written by the same author.

I don't get it, from volume 1 on page 161 you can see the chemistry between both male characters, what's the disappointment? Stop giving it such a low rating.
