Can I enjoy Bleach if I'm in the mid twenties?
by Yaniko

Rating: N/A
Recently, I had the taste for reading mangas and I bought a few tome 1 to see if I am going to like the series and continue. Before today, the only manga I have read was Dragon Ball and I really have enjoy it. Bleach is one of the manga I recently bought and I have enjoy the first tome. I am trying to learn the manga universe (I'm new into this) and I'm reading some things about the classification (shonen, seinen, shojo etc) and it says that Bleach is intended for a younger audience. I did enjoy the first tome but I don't know if the serie will be too "childish" for me? Is there a lot of 25-30 yo who reads and enjoy Bleach? Should I invest more?

Thanks!

Tite Kubo is a troll. Fact.

What kickstarted this manga off was attitude. It had a very in-your-face kind of approach to plot, it's characters and its powers. Then we got the Soul Society Arc, which was a well-executed damsel-in-distress arc with an M. Night Shyamalan moment at the end. This led into the Hueco Mundo arc, and the all out war. Again a damsel in distress plot to begin with, which turned into a 'find some way to defeat the omnipotent antagonist' plot. Now... I dunno what's happening now.

All right:- Pros
Fights - fantastic fights with well executed individual powers and moves.
Style - art and character design is utter top notch, always.
Kuchiki Rukia - I have a crush on her.
Humour - often very, very funny.

Cons:-
Pacing:- pages often comprise on one or two frames (usually closer to 3-5) with only a little happening each week. I remember comparing this to One Piece a year or two ago - with Bleach I was surprised that the chapter ended so soon, with One Piece I was often surprised there was so much of the chapter left.
Characters:- almost all have some kind of backstory, but even that is often quite shallow in execution with very little depth or believability. Plus I hate antagonists who are utterly overpowered and arrogant. They tend to make up for this in the 'Style' and 'humour' Pros I mentioned already. Except Aizen.
Plot:- Fighting, damsel in distress + 'what a tweest' moments. Unoriginal and repeptetive, overall.

Tite Kubo is a troll simply because of how he paces this bl**ding manga. Sense the frustration. People have theorized that's he's some kind of divinity simply for the way he keeps his audience whilst successfully trolling them, every. single. week.

Better than most, but still... once you've finished this manga Kubo, there will be nothing to stop us from visiting retribution on you... 7/10

Drags on

Compared to others, I gave up on this manga quite early- I think it was after a few volumes. It started off excellent with a badass hero with a special power and an exciting plot. Then, Rucia got taken away and things started to drag on for me. From what I've heard from others, the plot seems to go up and down in quality so you need a lot of patience and perserverance.

Firstly, I would like to mention how important this manga is to me. It was the first one I've ever read, and the main reason I fell in love with anime.

Now, I was with all of you about the Fullbring Arc, until I read the most recent chapter. Stick with it, guys. I don't believe we'll be disappointed.

Enjoyable and not as bad or dragging as people would have you believe

Sure it's a shonen, so you can expect the hero to beat his enemies and simply get stronger each time, that comes with the territory: there's a set of clichés for each genre and Bleach does meet them. But it does it very well.

I'm not saying some of the criticisms addressed to it aren't valid, but as long as you don't expect great depths and go in looking for an enjoyable read, you won't be disappointed.

There's a sense of novelty to most fights, Kubo Tite sure is one creative guy, whether it be in terms of type of attack, twists and turns, or fight choreography. He's also managed to create very strong, and varied characters; sometimes original, sometimes less so, some of them more likeable than others. I'm only disappointed that he doesn't seem to use these great characters he's created to their full extent, which would make Bleach so much more than your better than average but still cliché shounen. Still, aside from some misses, they were all interesting, character-wise *and* aesthetically wise.

And that's one of the major assets of this manga: the art. I find it to be simply gorgeous, the style striking and distinctive, the faces expressive, but whether you like it or not you can't deny that it's effective.

As for the ~plotlines, if Aizen's dragged a bit, I still find the 3 arcs so far different enough to hold my interest, not to mention the dozens of very well done subplots and new character introductions. All of this makes reading Bleach an enjoyable (if sometimes uneven) experience. I'd suggest to people bothered by the times where the rhythm slows down to read it volume by volume, as opposed to chapter by chapter. But then again it's proved to me recently that it can still leave me waiting on tenterhooks for a new chapter and yell with glee when it's out.

In any case it certainly doesn't feel like KT has said everything he wanted to with his characters, and as long as he hasn't, and that it remains so enjoyable, I'll keep on reading.

Bankai.

ETA: Badass Nakama ftw!

This was one of those very cool series when it started. You have death gods, cool weapons and skills. Then anime comes in with fillers after fillers. Main character gets so overly powerful. Lots of side characters keeps getting introduced. I'm surprised it didn't when Aizen was done. The whole story was based around it and now it's still continuing..... Whatever Zeromeo said on the spoiler, is pretty spot on what this manga is all about. If you like it, keep reading, but for me I dropped it right after Aizen's arc.

Alright, I'm not picky when it comes to reading shounen (I only look for good art, badass characters, and good fighting scenes. I can't care less about originality and whatnot), so obviously I loved Bleach right from chapter one to the point where Aizen is defeated.

But when this 'fullbring' ability is introduced, I can't even bring myself to read it anymore (I stopped reading completely after Ichigo's fight in the doll house). I mean, what the hell? It's like the whole plot of Bleach has taken a complete 180 turn (needless to say, the plot should've ended with Aizen's defeat anyway). Initially, Bleach was centered around Soul Society, Shinigamis and Hollows. But right now, there are SO many new characters that it just feels like a completely new manga, plus this completely new (and stupid) ability called 'fullbring'.

If Bleach had ended with Aizen's fall, I'd rate it 9.5/10. But since this dumb new arc pretty much trampled Bleach's image, I'm giving it a 7.5 and that's me being generous.

Wait and See

Well, surely unrealistic things happen. That's been established ever since we've been told about afterlife, hell, and souls wielding swords. Plotholes have been rife right from the beginning if only we looked closer (Shinigami need food, there are "families" in Soul Society etc).

While Bleach's premises aren't novel, Kubo has masterfully built a new world for us to dream and imagine in, and that's really the aim of any Shounen. Sure, we've got the swordfights and epic releases typical of any self-respecting series. But Kubo has also built up, bit by bit, our understanding of Soul Society, the thirteen court squads, Hueco Mundo and even the human world, and I think that deserves a bit of respect.

Like most of the reviewers, though, I myself have been quite frustrated by recent happenings. To me, it all went downhill ever since Ichigo killed Ulquiorra - evidently, Kubo isn't even willing to play within the rules he set. But it can only go down before it goes back up, and the recent chapters have -somewhat- redeemed the whole Fullbring fiasco. In my honest opinion, the only way to rectify Fullbring is to erase every single last one of those idiots and prepare some history of Ginjo that might actually be relevant for the final arc.

But let's not be too harsh on Kubo. Sure, he's made some silly fights: Hitsugaya's ice clone, Aizen pwning Yamamoto and everyone else flat, Ichigo saving the day (how unexpected). But we should credit him for the epic battles, from the Byakuya v. Ichigo on Sougyoku Hill to Grimmjow v. Ichigo and (yes) even Shunsui v. Starrk (though it'd have been nice to see his Bankai). And no one will deny that Barragan's release was just... Godlike. So, all in all, a deserved 8.5, though it could have hit 10 with more real character development (I'm only satisfied with Rukia) and less meaningless and counterproductive power-ups (bloody hell, kill Ichigo already!)

Now i truly understand the saying that you cant please people. For starters i love naruto but i have seen people comments about it being a typical shounen manga, so i went to the other 2 top manga bleach and one piece to see their comments and people are saying the say things about both of them too! I'm not a fan of one piece and bleach but i know its popular because they have been the top 3 for as long as i can remember. So what is it that you people want in a manga? every manga and i mean EVERY MANGA has its times. I mean you expect every chapter to be great? if you guys were under multi million dollar contracts to keep writing stories, your gonna tell me all of your stories are gonna be great? to you it might just be something to kill time but it's actually jobs to people, something to give them money and food to eat. I mean if you keep complaining about them being typical then stop reading it and read an actual book to kill time. Because i know if these writers were to stop making one piece, naruto and bleach then you guys would complain even more than it being boring. So stop complaining, no one is forcing you to read it.

Like right now with the fullbright. Good guys are OP they defend easily against the bad guys attack but when the bad guys lose a little they are going to get some strange OP strenght thingy to make the good guys fall and then the good guys defeat the bad guys..
