Description
I’m Taishi Aoba, a fifth-grader who's popular and good at everything. As a kind hero figure, I need a tragic heroine by my side. That tragic heroine’s name is Ema Akatsuki. I thought everything would go well if I asked the poor girl out, but things didn't turn out as planned...

A Potential Horror Story?
by Call_Me_Treo

I'm loving the premise: a conceited popular boy with a messiah complex who thinks he can get anything he wants and, when he discovers a broken girl that he can take advantage of to "fix her up" or "save her", he goes for her in order to paint himself the hero and boost his ego and positive image even further as a result. He was merely using her for his gain, not out of the goodness of his heart. Honestly, having a high and mighty egotistical ML with ulterior motives hide behind his seemingly caring exterior is already a relief to me. It's not much of a spoiler that the FL denies the ML his chance for victory in asking her out if it happens within the first chapter. His white knighting comes to ruin as the ML's pride is arleady shot at the revelation that any girl would ever deny him, even if he isn't actually interested in her romantically. Any rejection is a hurt to his ego and is seen as a slight to knock him down a peg. The fact that he is so in love with himself, making him think that the FL would fall for him after any display of kindness on his part (however feigned it may be), is something I was delighted to see displayed in a lead character every once in a blue moon. Comments like "I bet she's totally into me" and "I'll let it slide because I'm generous" ooze with fake humility and self-worship found in the most comically blindsighted of the proud, a type who cannot stand to be wrong or bested. Unfortunately, this isn't kept for much longer than the first chapter as the ML struggles with battling for his image and for his feelings for the FL. Yep, after his quick rejection, he starts to develop actual feelings - a desire for the forbidden. A typical response in fiction, but it must work for the advancement of the plot.

The manga slowly develops into a sort of horror, and distinguishing between the ML's paranoia toward the FL and what's actually happening outside of the ML's imagination becomes more difficult. As of this writing, chapter 5 is the latest to be released, so it's yet to be seen if this new development goes in the direction I think it's going in, or if it will lead to anything at all.

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
Unfortunatley, the story's only up to chapter 5, so whether or not the FL actually killed her mother is yet to be determined. Because it's so early in to the manga's run, I don't feel confident giving any sort of rating, since the story could splinter and dive off into any number of turns for better or for worse.
