Sometimes great, sometimes awful
by SirZed

Good: Setting, characters, drawing, pacing, creativity.
Could be better: Plot, impossible feats, deus ex machinae.
Bad: Conspiracy, politics, endings.

Completely unrealistic depiction of emotional behavior

This manga is like a shouting match between 2 idiots who keep speaking past each other. One uses unfairness advantages to win; the other uses plot armor to win. The battles aren't fun to watch.

The manga was pretty good for the first several volumes, but it gets really tiring after all the completely unfair battles.

All the bad guys are horribly evil and irredeemable psychopaths who keep winning because they have all the weapons and cards in the first place.

All the good guys are irredeemable shining white knights who keep surviving due to plot armor.

Both the Light and Dark endings are pretty bad.

Nice to have 2 endings

BTOOOM! Is not a masterpiece but definitely it did worth to read it, I really enjoyed !

The possibility of choosing one out of two endings was pretty nice!
In my opinion the best scenario would be to a mix of some parts of the 'Dark End' and others from the 'Light End', but...

Anyway, (NO spoilers), if you are in doubt with which 'last' volume you should pick to read, or start to read my suggestion is, go by the volume's name 😛

Meh.

Btooom is ... meh. Characters are meh. Plot is meh. Creativity is meh. But it's good enough to pass the time.

Survival genre thrives on adrenaline-packed scenes, gore, and wit. Because Btooom chooses to use a variety of bombs, strategy should've been key to the series. It lacks the shocking gore that other survival series use to keep readers' attention, and battle scenes feel less exciting because most fights are about how to blow someone up. With that being said, nothing in the plot has been very innovative or witty. Everything has been really predictable, and I also find myself hating the characters and how they react. They're annoying and cringy rather than clever. It majorly detracts from the series.

That doesn't mean you shouldn't read it. It's consistently paced, has nice drawings, and has action + romance. Good enough for a read. However, it's not very memorable or interesting unless it's your gateway to the survival genre.

Faithful to the anime

Or perhaps vice versa. It nicely captures the atmosphere of the anime even though its in manga form. It does go further into the story, however since its a monthly manga, it hasn't progressed too far even after several years.

The same type of twists and turns. Lots of action, betrayal, mind games. If you liked the anime, you'll like the manga as well.

Survival, kill or be killed, a videogame which becomes a cruel reality show, blood, rapes (WTF were they necessary?!?).
I dont understand why a too young girl and a mature man should fall in love each other, maybe thats not what the autors meant but it feels like pedophilia, and this annoys me.

If you're into those type of reality-game-survival genre, then you're welcome to try this manga out! This manga isn't that awful nor it's that good. An 8 from me should be a good rate for this Manga. I like how Ryouta used his online gaming skills to survive on the island. Different type of bombs, traps, etc, to captivate you to continue reading. Since this is a Japanese manga, you can't escape from the enormous breasts... on High school girls. Some parts of the manga did made me feel uncomfortable and I had to skip 3 pages just to avoid it.

Modern Sengoku?

Is it just a coincidence? Some of the chaps in the manga were given names (different in only the last kanji character) borrowed from one Sengoku warrior or another... For example Oda Nobutaka (Oda Nobunaga), Uesugi Kenya (Uesugi Kenshin), Date Masahito (Date Masamune), Akechi Mitsuo (Akechi Mitsuhide), Imagawa Yoshiaki (Imagawa Yoshimoto)...

There are alot of comments on here saying it really isn't a good read, but it is! Yea it's reminiscent of Battle Royale (I actually stoped reading that series.) but it's different in ways. Tbd art is nice, and the action scenes are nice. I absolutely love the story!

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
The fact that its totally random people sent to battle was a plus, and how tbey got therd by the grudges of people they wronged. Some are there by mistake of blame too.

I loved Taire (I hope I spelt his name right.) until he went weird, I have a weakness for those characters. The romance was good too, I love a good action series with actual romace, not just some half backed akwardness and just blushing. There are some explicit scenes, but this is seinen, it's aimed for an older adult male audience not for girls XD. So if your not interested in all the gore, explicit acts, pantsu shots, and the showing of breast than go read shounen!
There is also an anime, the openinv is just fantastic! Also it's more toned down.
