When the main characters of a sports / action series are debating over the "99 Percent", you know something has gone terribly wrong.

...........WTF happened to this

Welll lets do this and some small spoilers below............basically there are so many problems i dont feel like saying them all, all i can really say about this is that it was a great manga in the beginning with amazing art and an interesting story with funny characters. although the art just keeps getting better the story gets way worse (id say mainly after he starts being storm King) the it just gets confusing and eventually all the author does is make several and i mean SEVERAL metaphoric sequences with his characters doing random unexplained Things. Dont get me wrong they do get the story in a good place several times but then they go right back to the confusing random stuff with more and more metaphors. i basically read this to the end because of how i used to like this and how amazing the art was; but i can only recommend this if you dont care too much about the "story/dialog" cause it got lost in this manga. ESPECIALLY the last 100 or so chapters that lose most of it sense and story to Metaphors and randomness again. The only thing i wanted by the end was some answered questions/mysteries and a future ending where you see who ended up with who and what became of every one, it didnt have to be years in the future it could have been just after everything but you didnt get that you just got a few random pics of all the characters saying and doing different stuff. if anything i learn from this and Tenjou Tenge (his other series i was reading that went exactly the same and i mean EXACTLY) is that in both he had a great story in the begining but now a days Oh! Great (author) cant keep up a story to save his life and cant end one to save his family. i really liked these two series and i cant stand the way they turned out and how he butchered them. i only gave this a 7 cause i did have some good time with this in the beginning and the art is still really great

The emotional roller-coster of Air Gear

His idea for the manga was excellent. let's make a manga about roller blades. But he lost control of the story (as usual) around chapter 150 or so. After following this since the anime and continuing from the manga, I thought that this might be pretty cool. Both story and art work was great. As I was reading this from the continuation of the anime, there just seems to me the story was just getting dragged on and on and it made it confusing for me at times, but it picks up a bit near the end which I'm kinda glad the story ends at volume 36. I find Air Gear my favorite creation by Oh Great! But, he REALLY needs to get better at his storytelling. =.=

Gets lame

It was so cool at first. Rollerblade street gangs is an awesome concept. But once it became about the other nonsense rather than about the gangs going up against each other I found less interest. As it continued I liked it less and less.

Air Gear the Review
by Dragoon119

Air Gear started out like a typical shounen however unlike many others it went about it in a fresh new way by using a different idea. Using high powered rollerblades called Air Treks. This may sound lame but in reality it was very exciting once explained. As the story progressed many things about the world of Air treks was explained. What kept me reading was the amount of thought and research that the author put into actually writing the mechanics of Air treks and the tricks that the riders were capable of doing with them. We then as a reader learn that their is a competition which determines the best of the best Air trek riders or Storm riders as they called them in the story. Later however we learn that to truly compete in the competition it is necessary to own a special Air trek. I'm gonna stop their because that is where the story begins to travel down hill.

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
This is where the problems start, the author attempts to throw to many things at once without addressing the previous loose ends he left open as cliffhangers to keep reading. Tossing in the high powered regalia which are the special Air treks owned by the best Storm riders was a great idea. However he was unable to keep up with the ever mounting amount of physics research necessary to include it into the manga. Just a few of the questions he left unanswered are:

What happened to Ringo, Rika, and the two other sisters?
What happened to the tower?
What happened to Ikki's parents?
What happened to Ikki's crow?
What happened to the regalias?
What happened to the obama/girls body? How did they switch back?
How did Ikki recover having every single muscle in his body torn?
What happened to Ikki's teaching? Wasn't he in middle school? Did he just decide not enter high school?
These are just a few of the loose ends left open to who ever believes they have an answer to them.

All in all the authors inclusion of many of today's pop culture ended badly because he strayed too far away from the original plot of the manga. Which was the simple joy of flying through the air with Air treks unimpeded and unobstructed by anyone or anything.

I give this manga a 6 out of10 because 2/3 percent of this manga was actually very good. It was only when the manga neared the three hundred mark, that the plot decided to pick up its suitcase grab it's belongs. And move out of Air Gear and has since the ending on chapter 357 has not returned. Still I'm glad I read this manga since it gave me and my friends many sleepless nights trying to reverse engineer Oh Greats brilliant invention.

Another botched series by Oh! Great

Just as with Tenjou Tenge, the series loses coherence and focus mid-way. I just assume that Ogure Ito does this because he gets bored with working on his series and just focuses on drawing surreal art and pantyshots, while trying to make as little sense as possible.
If it would have stayed a series about kids rollerskating, it might have been a decent series.

Seriously, how hard can it be to make something comprehendable. Currently at Vol. 14 (heard it gets even worse), and I have no clue what's what. The setting's interesting, and I have no problem with the super-powers that is starting to appear. Wouldn't have*, rather, but it feels so off when compared to the earlier volumes which was based more on fringe-science.

Regardless, the main thing he needs to work on is STORY-TELLING. The quality of it makes his name seem like a poor joke. Bah. Bah. Bah!

I can't really see how this got to 30+ vols in Japan unless they were all about flash without substance and the "nudity" (not even any frickin' nipples?! Weak).

(Is it easier to comprehend if you're a Jap/fluent in it?)

Good start but then felt it went downhill.

There a lot I could write but I think otheres already pointed ut out. I liked the start with the rollerblade converted sport type, customize AT part's, and was looking foward to see all the different ideas and what would happen etc from the impression of vol1. Teams, gangs, winning parts etc. (ignored th fanservice but it did make it funny sometimes)

Then later maybe after vol 12 it went downhill for me, it drawn away from the entire theme of AT thing and learning new moves that i thought was so cool and level etc. It went into all this nonsense with super power stuff that should have just stay related to the AT instead of these over power guys that not even sometimes not related to AT all. Went to deep with political stuff. It pulled away from the AT games and focus on this villen thing. Maybe it could have shown up latwr when they reaching the final rank and learn bad news of the top rank people or aomething. It just felt way overpowered. Maybe they could stuck same plot line but tone it down but then maybe it be less cool. I wanted to see more skate tricks then havong to shoot super moves. Here and there would be ok. Though I guess that was for lower rank games and i though we be seeing more of those challanges but it fast foward skip or rule match only needed a few to move onto the next level. I guess i was exspecting more sport power type manga then having it switch to more to science power special moved that are just crazy. Maybe if the game where more on point ststem for move then bashing each other it would be great. Characters then learn super power moves that help them through challenges. I dont know. I just dont know how to exsplain it well. Just wanted cool sport roller blade and super cool sports tricks.

Agito is my top fav character.

The artwork was nice on the detail on the rollerblade and breakdown. I really thought and got excited that they were going to focus on stuff like that. Main char would upgrade his blade over time with new parts he won etc. Even if it fictional story and etc.

It's hard for to rate this since later on i started to dislike the story. sadly i think i'll have to give this a 5-7. VoI 1-11 would be a 10 score. I don't hate the manga, just very disapointed.

one day ill go and finish up the manga. I enjoy rereading up till vol 12 and the. skipping after to ch or vol i liked down the road. Will purchase the rest of the manga once it done.

At first I read it to see what all the hype was about...but man is it boring. In the end, I had to drop it. Too much unnecessary dialogue. Sure, he battles many opponents but it gets too repetitive. Most of the time, I literally just flipped through pages without reading the dialogue.

Well anyways, I'm really glad I read it.
Air Gear is one of the first manga series I started reading and it'll always have a place in my heart.
I'll never forget how amazed I was seeing the drawings. I thought, "Wow, so this is what a manga can be..." And since then I've read hundreds more but not one can compare.

I don't think the story is flawless, but there are so few that are. Unlike novels that are perfected before being published, the stories of manga have to be made up along the way. In ten years, I'm sure there were many changes made to the story, and it's sure to be confusing. But reading carefully, there was nothing that couldn't be comprehended as one part of the story flowed into the next. It may not have been planned out perfectly from the beginning, but everything still manages to connect in the end. And besides, it was interesting.

I don't know enough to call it a masterpiece, but I'm sure it'll always be one of my favorites.
