Different strokes for different folks.

FMA- Winry is a very fun character, but I don't necessarily respect her nor can I call her admirable. Riza and Izumi are my favorite types of females though I wished they had a larger role. Ah, but FMA will be one of my favorites in whatever incarnation because the characters are just so amazing.without being too exaggerated. smile

1/2 Prince- This is pretty cool. I read it a while back, picked it up, then put it back down. It's not one of those works that I marathon read because I can't get into it like that. I find the lead enjoyable when I feel the urge to read it.

Gokusen- I really admire her character. She's like the guy from GTO only much more educated and hardly vulgar--and with the classic honor to boot! Yeah, I've been reading this on and off again...but it's because I keep forgetting to read it. -_-" i'm such a moron.

Black Lagoon- Revy. Tell me about it. The moment she had a glass of alcohol, I loved her.

Superior and sequel- It goes up and down for me because she gets far too blushy at times, but I gotta love her and give her major props.

Oresama teacher- I backed away from this around chapter 40. I tend to dislike harem though this is probably the only exception I'll ever have. Mafuyu is just amazing and I love how she gets into fights so much that I know I'll be picking it up again and will hopefully be able to ignore all the romance.

Skip Beat- How I loved the manga when I first read it, but I felt that Kyoko's character just went down hill when Ren's character was being explored. However regardless of that, I respect her talent and no matter how mad I get at her it's breathtaking to me.

Koi dano Ai dano- I loved it when I first picked it and thought I was going to see some a chess master at work, but I didn't read the prequel so I hadn't gotten an overall feel for the character. But I felt it handled analysis in a typical shoujo fashion and it became less spectacular as time went on. I should read the prequel before I pick this up again it seems.

Akuma to Love Song- It goes up and down for me on this as well despite me adoring the MC.

Kaichou wa maid sama- I stopped reading this and don't ever intend to pick it up, but I do think she deserves credit as it wasn't really the female MC that made me stop reading it.

Orange Marmalade- I liked the MC and while I don't think I've kept tabs on the last 5-8 chapters I don't know whether or not I'd call my feelings for the MC respect or just a great like that extends beyond what I normally find in a non-action romance.

The above had females that I respected within the first five chapters (or 5-10 appearances)

One Piece- I have stopped reading this too mainly because it became so long. I did like it and the female characters have strength and while I admire that...I think that's about all I can admire. Who knows if I'll pick it up again.

Cheese In The Trap- I love THIS! I've been keeping serious tabs on it for quite some time. I didn't expect I would like her so much but since so many came to like it I stuck it out...and while it was long...it kind of went like "huh? oh..oh...huh? uh-huh...yeah? wow! wow!" I'm pretty biased against most things labeled shoujo and josei so while I don't want to say it blows me away-I love it!

Kare Kano- I never found her annoying, but I was for a long time more so impressed with her character rather than herself. Needless to say that soon changed.

Stuff that I can recall on my own that gave way toward a gradual respect:

Sarasah- I forget my initial thoughts for this and while I can't call her amazing or anything, I felt she had improved a great deal from the beginning.

Please Save My Earth- Again not the most fantastic example

Yu Yu Hakusho- Not really "main" enough where it matters, Keiko's probably the only non-influential love interest that has my respect. And the other gals? Don't get me started. smile Again not fantastic either.

Inuyasha- The anime only. Kikyo and Kagome both had to prove themselves to me. Kikyo less than Kagome.

Life- Whether it was the villain or the protagonist. The villain part is irrelevant. However the heroine she became really strong as time went by.

The others I either haven't dug into to give an opinion or just haven't read. There were many new ones and since I'm going to be doing a lot of reading lately it's definite I'll be looking in those. I'll update soon with a full report!

Thank you for you time. Thank everyone! Thank you! Thanks! Yay! Thank you!

Shion no Ou is pretty good. It's about a girl named Shion who is a shougi prodigy. There's some mystery involved with the murder of her parents; the trauma caused her to lose part of her memory (regarding the murder) and her voice. Don't mind the gender bender tag, the main character isn't the one crossdressing.
It's not licensed in English, nor is it completely scanlated, so that might be a problem. Still, the anime is at least completely subtitled.

There's also Aphorism, I guess. Some people might view her as a Mary Sue, but I personally liked her.

That's all I can think of.

Yona from Akatsuki no Yona
Esther from Trinity Blood and Caterina too from the same series, (I don't personally like Caterina's character, but she is a strong woman.)
Someone already mentioned Kiri from Beauty Pop but she was never swayed by anything.
I like Raimei from Nabari no Ou
