mm man..that's a good question...back in my country, the only connection i got from anime were sakura cardcaptor, DBZ, corrector Yui, lol yes, etc....I remember waking up early just to get to see jetix, the only thing centered around anime and such.
Then when i came here at the age of 10, i didn't had a computer, so i started checking some channels for cartoons.., then i stumble upon this channel called Anime Network on Demand [Time warner Cable]
and then I saw the anime Gravitation, I thought at first shuichi was a girl, since it had pink hair, but then As i got further into the anime, I began to doubt that [Shuichi is a boy's name rite?] those questions got into my mind and stuff. Then when i got a computer like years later, i began a search and I cross paths with MU. wow, i didn't even know something like that existed. Seriously i never thought, never imagined that they made that kind of genre for anime/manga etc...
First was Yaoi
Then Shoujo
Then..;.go on...XD laugh

*looks at everyone's posts after his.*

Everyone's addiction started after the last anime boom about ten years ago. Now I feel old and out of place because I got sucked in by a classic space opera from the 70's.

My older brother broadened my horizon with Neon Genesis Evangelion when I was about 15. Cowboy Bebop is the only anime series I ever enjoyed and finished watching, afterwards.
I never really liked anime and still don't.

(Ghibli Productions are very well done and I appreciate the beauty of it, but it just doesn't work for me. I lose interest very fast when the movie is animated and without actors at all...)

First Mangas were Eden and 20th Century Boys.

Technically, Yoko Tsuno and Marsupilami were the first comic books I read (as a child).

My friends would read xxxholic at the Library.
And at the time, I was closeminded and said,
"Why are you guys reading super-long comic books?
Is it THAT entertaining? I would get bored of it!"

They didn't care about what I had to say. It was boring, I picked up a random shoujo manga. Hana Yori Dango. And it turned out to be one of the best shoujo mangas.

I am now a very happy hypocrite. biggrin

Then I found the anime version of HYD. And became a fan of both anime and manga.

My road into liking anime and manga began somewhere in 2009 and actually started with an American cartoon, Avatar: The Last Airbender, I was at a site and I saw someone with an icon from it and it looked nice so I looked up the cartoon and it sounded mildly interesting, so I watched it, then, over the internet again, I saw someone who liked Avatar: The Last Airbender liked something else called Munto. Munto sounded interesting so I went and watched Munto, a Japanese OVA. I later searched a different site for more information about Munto and my search came up with something called Amuto, since it was close in spelling to Munto. (Any Shugo Chara! fan's know what Amuto is?.... hmmm?) I was interested when I saw a guy with cat ears (now who might that be?) and wondered why he had cat ears, and found that the anime was called Shugo Chara! and I looked it up on Wikipedia, I saw there was a manga before an anime adaption and, for a reason I will never know, though I had never read manga before I decided to read the manga before watching the anime (and a good thing I did, I don't like the anime at all!) So I read my first manga. But it sort of stopped there, I didn't read anything after Shugo Chara!. I later went back to the one person over the internet that I had first learned about Munto from and saw something about a manga called Dengeki Diasy (I started out reading good manga laugh ), which I read and enjoyed, but I was hesitant to read any other manga (not sure why...) before I finally gave in and read Beast Master, I looked around after reading Beast Master, reading a series here and there and keeping a list myself of the ones I had read before I stumbled upon this site and my manga reading really took off.

So my coming to like manga/anime (which I didn't like before, I thought anime was stupid, and I just thought that manga was like all the American comics, focused on super heroes and such and since I didn't like American comics I doubted I would like manga) was completely by myself and unfortunately no one I know likes manga or anime, or even heard of manga… no

How do I explain it...? When I was like 5 or 6, I fell in love with some colred cute anime on tv and that's when I have taken a liking to anime. A year later, I found some mangas from my cousin, and well, I got hooked with it. ahaha!

was visiting my cuz in Jamaica, and they where watching "Guy the awakening" (of course I didn't know that at the time). It was the first cartoon (pardon the terminology) that I'd ever even heard of with that much bloody violence, cussing and sex. Right after that Cyber city oedo came on and as soon as I came back to the states I started hunting for anime buying, renting and on few occasions stealing anime of similar content such as Devilman I and II and Crying freeman, my purview then expanded the other anime categories like wild fire and now I'm like a anime/manga junkie and I can't get enough.

I found out about Anime about three years ago and manga half a year later.
It all started about three or four years before that when my family were visiting my cousin's, I had absolutly nothing to do but sitting and watching when one of two cousins were playing some game on their computer, he saw I was bored and asked if I wanted to watch something on the tv and I agreed.
(it seemed he was borrowing it from a friend but didn't like it)

He put in the Cd and left and then i watched it, but we had to go home in the middle of it and so for the next three years a was bothered about what happened later, when ever I remembered it i got so irritated because I had nothing to go one in my search except my own memory of (not much).

But as three years had passed and i suddenly remembered it once more i decided to do what i could to find out what in the world it was i had seen three years back, so I started to Google things I remembered (I didn't know such a word as Anime or Mecha existed or any of the ordinary search words that can be used.
But i learned more and more and found new words to use for my search's and after allot of hard work I finally found out the name of the video i remembered (the things I remembered were a Purple robot with some green or black on it that was larger then the buildings and that it fought against some kinda monster and that the pilot who was a boy were reluctant to operate it as well at he went to a co-workers home for some reason and entered her room when he didn't get a replay (she was in the shower) and then he ended up falling over her grabbing he breast, And I also remembered that to defeat one of the monsters (when there was another allied robot, a red one) they had to connect allot of truck to provide energy to a massive sniper rifle to penetrate the shield of the diamond.) formed monster.
-It turned out to be Neon Genesis Evangelion
After watching it i started to look at other animes, BUT LATER I FOUND OUT THAT MANY ANIMES WHERE BASED ON DRAWN VERSIONS CALLED MANGA eek eek
-And I left the Art of Anime behind and embraced the Art of Manga...

I started back in 2001 when adult swim first showed Cowboy Bebop in the US, I was about 11 back then and would stay up late to watch it. After that I watched a few others like Rurouni Kenshin and Outlaw star, but stopped after all of those shows stopped airing, then all that was on was pokemon and dragonball Z which is meh. Then i got back into anime during my freshman year of college, me and my friends would reminisce about our childhoods and we all remember watching anime when we were kids, so I looked up some of the old series I used to watched and was hooked again. Then I found out that I could read manga that the shows were based off of online and started to read that and have been doing it ever since.

i started watching anime in the mid-late 80s
some on tv and sometimes we rented from video stores
favorites i had when i grew up was

Meiken Jolie [aka Belle and Sebastian]
Sengoku Majin Goushougun[known as macron1 in us]
Cobra
kimagure orange road
Genshi Shounen Ryuu
ginga nagareboshi gin
Jungle Book Shounen Mowgli
Peter Pan no Bouken
and
sandybell

its only natural that i found anime and liked it
i watched alot of cartoons[as i guess most kids do]
but this was diffrent from the usual BS they feed us in the typical US cartoons
these ppl seemed to have genuine feelings and acted human ,they argued, they fought, they fell in love and had genuine problems like...diseases,no parents, alcoholic parents and ppl died
very very diffrent and ALOT better in many ways
