This week's poll was suggested by jacob66. Imagine that a series that you like has been on hiatus for a while. Suddenly a new chapter comes out! What do you do?

You can submit poll ideas here
http://www.mangaupdates.com/showtopic.php?tid=3903

Previous Poll Results:
Question: You read a series and feel neutral about it (don't love or hate it). What score would you rate it?
Choices:
10 - votes: 587 (7.9%)
9 - votes: 80 (1.1%)
8 - votes: 227 (3%)
7 - votes: 1538 (20.6%)
6 - votes: 2232 (30%)
5 - votes: 2297 (30.8%)
4 - votes: 277 (3.7%)
3 - votes: 69 (0.9%)
2 - votes: 19 (0.3%)
1 - votes: 123 (1.7%)
There were 7449 total votes.
The poll ended: April 14th 2018

Who are the trolls who rate it a 10?

Was the inspiration for this post D Gray man? Cause that's one of the few that I know was on hiatus then got a continuation.

Anyway, I'd just reread about 5ish chapters before the newest chapter... I'm actually pprettygood at rememebring plot line/stories. If I like them.

Hmm... it really depends between reread the previous few chapter and read new chapter right away mmm...
How long is the hiatus, how much do I like the manga, how complicated the manga is and how generic the manga is mmm...

Read the new chapter right away. At least half a year? I can name albums i follow that run on a 2 year schedule. Or worse.

I gotta re-read the last few chapters cos I won't remember what's been happening in the story.

An example of when this happened recently is Black Lagoon. So many hiatuses

Totally depends on how much I remember and how complex the plot is. I'll usually skip through the last few chapters and then read the new one. In other cases I might just wait till the manga or the arc is done and then reread it, either from the start or from the start of the current arc.

None of these really work for me because, with the exception of strictly episodic and/or slice-of-life series, I never start to read a manga until it's completely scanlated. But I suppose I'll go with the 3rd option, since it's the closest to my preferred method.

Either I start over from the beginning again or I reread the previous few chapters.

I usually read a series only if it's completed and fully scanlated because I'm more of a binge-reader, but there are a few manga/manhua I'm currently reading that are still ongoing. I reread at least the last two chapters every time a new episode is out - even if only 5 days have passed since the last one - because I like to have the impression of a "continuation", otherwise I can't get into the story.

I've not made a secret about this topic, for me breaks in the availability to regularly read new chapters is a serious problem in this context......let's face it, these are serial works, part of the actual design is getting regular installments after some set amount of time. I'll drop most series in a heartbeat over this sort of thing, maybe putting it on hold until it's completed to then be assured of being able to read it in its entirety.

That said, as far as this poll goes, I'm going to go with ones I really like, and then yes, off the top of my head both Yotsubato! and Gin no Saji come to mind as this applying to (or at least roughly the same scenario, no clue/don't remember if those were affected by "official" hiatus, which I'm assuming is what the poll is asking about), those are ones I really like, no need to refresh my memory, I've read whatever new has come out on those the second I found out something had come out to read biggrin

Depends on a few factors. How long is the series? When did the series go on hiatus--at the beginning of a new arc, in the middle or at the end? Is it a weekly or monthly? If the series stopped in the beginning or middle of an arc, I'm liable to wait for a few chapters to come out before starting up again. If its normally put out as a weekly with low page count I'm also likely to wait. If the series hasn't gotten too long and was consistently released prior to going on hiatus then I may start all over to refresh my mind. I always re-read at least a few chapters to get myself back into the feel of the series. There have been some series that were heading towards the end of an arc and I couldn't wait and immediately read the latest chapter. However, I'd say most of the time I hold off reading and wait for a decent chunk to be put out.

That's basically me as well. For a lot of manga I could read a new chapter right away, and I think that's my first course of action, but if I don't remember what is going on, I'll go read the previous 2-3 chapters to refresh my memory (could be more.)

DN Angel is also apparently coming back from hiatus. But of course the first thing I thought of when I saw this poll was Hunter x Hunter.

Ultimately it depends on the manga for me. If it's something I feel ambivalent about, I just read the new chapter, even if I've forgotten plotlines/characters. If it's something I really like, I'll reread it (usually just a chunk, but sometimes from the beginning) even if I do remember everything. The only exception is probably HxH, which I really enjoy, but the hiatuses made me drop it post-Chimera Ant arc, though I'm planning on picking it up again when it (finally) finishes.

Read the new chapter right away.
My memory pretty good, but in the case of me forgetting some bit of it, which hardly ever happened, I may or may not depending on what I deem necessary, reread few previous chapter and that chapter or that arc or the whole thing.

I reread some of my favourite series sometimes because I find fun in doing so, not because I forgot the whole thing. If you forgot it, then subconsciously you don't like it that much, you think you do.

I'll read the new chapter right away, and then wait for a chunk of chapters afterwards. I like to read at least one volume of chapters per sitting, but I make an exception when a series comes off hiatus.

I super don't understand the people here saying they don't start a manga until it's totally finished and scanlated. Like... are you trying to be totally ignorant to popular culture? The point at which a series finishes is the point at which it starts to slip out of the public consciousness and eventually become irrelevant. I hadn't thought about even a genre-defining manga like dragon ball very much for the 10 years or so before battle of gods came out.
