Everytime I download an anime, I can't get video just sound. They are in avi format and I can't find a program to run them. Any suggestions?

VLC is a free player and reads avi without a fail. I've been using it for two years. Just search for a site to download it on google, the ones I have are in french.

http://www.headbands.com/gspot/ this will tell you what codec (audio and video) it uses.

Search for the CCCP codec pack too, should have everything to run anime videos.

You should download the CCCP codec pack. And next time, you should put your video-related questions in Baka-Updates anime section instead of here.

I use K-Lite codec, it runs with CLASSIC media player and i LOVE using it It's very simple, just the setup and walla you finish and can open any avi files.. or mlv or blah blah.

I love VLC for almost everything (only problems with rmvb because im too lazy to dl a codec for it and .mkv because soft subs suck too much for VLC to handle -_-). But yah, if VLC doesn't solve your problem (which it should) CCCP should.

That happened to me before, but I downloaded a XviD or DivX file from some Windows site and everything was alright

Just try to open the file with Windows Media Player and it will say something like "can't open the file." There will also be a choice that says something about searching the web for a program that will open the file. Click it and a window will open for a Microsoft site; find the search engine (I think somewhere at the top) and put in XviD. Click on one of the search links; it will provide a page which you can download the thing I'm talking about from and then your video should work! I doubt this will help much, but I hope it does anyway ^_^'''

Well mediaplayers usualy don't solve the problem since players just use the codecs there are on your pc, but the VLC media player should work (since it uses his own codecs apparently).

Most people just have to install the newest DivX codec to solve the problem.
But using the cccp codec pack should cover that as well.

But I wouldn't start mixing codec packs. If you do that probably nothing'll play anymore

Wow....so many VLC recomendations! I say no to VLC coz it tries to take over your computer with its ugly icons. MPC (media player classic) is what I use, Zoom player's not bad either.

VLC is gross. it plays any file but the set up and everything else about it sucks. i wouldn't recommend it. since ur just watching avi files just download divx and the official xvid codec. that should be enough. hell throw in the CCCP while ur at it- so u never have to download a codec again. then use whatever player you want.

KMPlayer is like VLC, a codec included player for lazy people like me, but unlike VLC it plays MKV files reliably and doesn't overlap soft subs when there are multiple subs displayed. It's also better in innumerable other little ways. If you aren't going to go the CCCP route, I highly recommend this one.

My personal opinion.

MPlayer (Linux/BSD/Mac/Windows)
The absolute best media player in my opinion. Plays nearly every video format known to man. Very high quality playback, highly configurable and stable. Many GUI front-ends available. Originally meant for Linux, but works just as well with other operating systems.

SMPlayer (Linux/Windows)
Actually, this is MPlayer with a different front-end. Easier for casual Windows users to compile/install compared to standard Mplayer. Playback quality just as good. Default color balance is a bit weird on some systems, but you just need to adjust it once and it'll remember the settings.

VLC (Linux/BSD/Mac/Windows)
Pretty decent player, but has trouble playing MKV h.264 type files. Also doesn't display soft-subs properly. Mac version is crappy. Best used as a back-up player.

CCCP (Windows)
Probably the best codec pack + player combo for Windows users. High quality playback, although some have commented that it sometimes trips over itself trying to balance video quality and playback speed. Default settings should be more than adequate for most fansubs.

Niceplayer + Perian plug-in (Mac)
The Perian plugin is well known among Mac users, but it sometimes crashes with the newer version of Quicktime, so you should use Niceplayer instead when using this combo. High quality playback, but you need to wait until the whole video loads for soft-subs to display properly (Just pause video for 10sec in the beginning and everything displays fine)

Windows Media Player (Windows)
It's by Microsoft, so naturally, it's crap. Don't bother with this one.


Use Google to find em.... easy as pie.
