The Distaff Side is looking for editors with an interest in classic, intelligent manga for women. Our focus is on authors who are historically or artistically important, particularly the Year 24 Group (aka the "24nengumi" aka the "Fabulous 49ers"), and Post-Year 24 Group. Other mangaka of interest are people like HATSU Akiko and NISHI Keiko. We are also interested in doing a limited number of shounen or seinen titles by artists like YAMADA Akihiro.

Currently, I am working on translations of several oneshots or standalone sections of series that range from 20 to 200 pages in length. Longer series are possible in the future.

Requirements: You must have access to photoshop or the equivalent and be meticulous in your work. Speed is not important; quality is.

I do all of the scans myself, and--for the most part--they should not require much cleaning. However, many of these series feature extensive, meaningful font changes (i.e. the bad guys use bad guy fonts, ghosts use ghostly fonts, etc.) and handwritten comments with awkward sizes and placements. Some artistic judgment will be required on your part, which is why I need editors rather than separate cleaners and typesetters.

Onomatopoeia will be footnoted rather than redrawn, but you must be able to handle text over patterned backgrounds and white text on black backgrounds.

I prefer staff who have an interest in manga history and diversity, who value idiomatic over literal translations, and who know what "the distaff side" means without looking it up. laugh

PM me with your e-mail address and I will send you a short sample to work on. Please also let me know what type of project you're potentially interested in (length, difficulty, subject matter, art style, favorite authors, etc.). I'm open to project suggestions as long as they fit the general focus described above. If all this sounds like a great idea to you, rather than revoltingly pretentious, please send me a message.
