I hope I'm around when humans stop being at the top of the food chain simply so I can all of that arrogence get trampled.

I don't know. I'm sure that neither dying of nuclear contamination, nor of disease will be a delight. Anyway, I hope that, when our time comes, earth can regenerate and all the other species can go on living.

Well unless we expand out in to space in the next few billion years, if we are still around as a species, then it won't matter too much as our sun expands and consumes the planet and all of us.

Humans aren't really evolving much anymore...we mix our genes all across the planet and due to medical technology "natural selection" doesn't come into play too much.

Evolutions doesn't stop, just because we can don't abandoned the weakest member of our society. Humans still evolve to day, the gain of blue eyes happen around 10k years ago, and we are a couple of hundreds from losing them. Why? Evolutuion! Evolutions is all living thing, no matter how smart we think we are, and no matter much the natural selection now is a sideshow, for the most part.

I doubt we'll hit a point where we say "Hey we are completely genetically different from humans of X thousand years ago"

This will never happen, all living thing on this earth, share some genetic material. So no we will never say ``completely´´ but we (hopefully) will hit the point when we will say. "Hey, we are no longer homo sapiens." But I still think we will call ours self humans.

hypothesis: Evolution without natural selection will lead to the degeneration of our species.
I mean natural selection is meant to sort out the bad traits that mutations bring about. If it doesn't come to play (for reasons of medical technology or protecting the weak) every kind of trait will end up getting passed on and pile up in our DNA. Now supposedly bad traits occur far more frequently than the useful ones. So in the long run we're headed straight for degeneration, right?
I think that's the most likely reason we will be going down someday.

I choose 4. But for the other options, I'd say 2012 might as well be a possibility (be open minded, people, and you're prepared for anything). Aliens? when we do meet them.

For this, I'd say war would come too soon for this to really have a big impact on us. Probably science would slow down for a few years, but you have seen what people have been doing for so long, longer than anything else, which is war. War pretty much does the job of evolution for us when big, bad thugs from space aren't here to bully us. wink

I chose for for #3 (We will always be at the top) since that's more likely to happen.

Option 1 doesn't realy count.

Option 2 voters should just shut up untill 2013.

And option 4.. seriously? read a book?

There really is a choice missing from those given.

A choice for those thinking it happened already, those that believe in ridiculous/funny theories, the arrogants, and the cynics (in that order).
But nothing for those that believe there will be a day when humankind and an intelligent race might meet. Be it in a thousand or hundreds of thousands years.
As long as a giant meteorite doesn't crash on earth until then or we don't wipe ourselves out there is a chance. If the sun dies out there is nothing that prevents humankind from moving on. The technology at that time should allow easy space travel <_<. There is already an international project for colonizing mars (or at least build a base on it's surface) that should start rolling in 2015 or something. With a million more year we should be able to reach another sollar system to colonize when the sun dies bigrazz.
