phew, I just finished the manga...and it was pretty good overall...but I have to say, the ending didn't really go the way I wanted =/

The whole track and field thing just disappeared near the end, along with his rivalry with Arima. I know some people said that the whole manga wasn't about track to begin with, but from my point of view, track was what started it all, it was what brought them together, so a good ending should also close it up nicely. I was hoping that Yamato would get both the sports AND the girl (i.e. Suzuka), but the mangaka just had to make him get only one lol.
Also, somebody suggested an accident to happen to Yamato..I think that could be a pretty good ending too, lots of material to make it an emotional and touching ending. As of now, the current ending didn't really give me much of a jerk...though for that particular ending it did wrap everything up.

Though, in the end, it was too realistic...not really what I wanted, cuz in my opinion, mangas/animes are meant to take us away from reality XD. 2.5/5 for the ending, 4/5 for whole series for me. =)

Because its a good manga and It doesn't matter when it ends.

I wont to say that i really like the whole manga and i was really happy at the end (i cryed cry a little [shhht don't tell shy onegai]). I would like the story to end differently , every one wont to end it their way. I wonted to say more but the people above me already said it.

i believe the ending has moved this manga from dream-land to earth; and thats not bad sometimes.
having the guys married and olympic gold medals would have been really crap to me none
i like to think that the mangaka has truly made love win over everything else: sport and life itself. its a great ending to me, even though a bit sad for what it could have been, without a pregnancy.
im even sadder that the tv shows have not covered the whole manga, stopping to the easy love romance ending. such a waste for the following emotions...

well, that`s the world of sports, truly... life is hard even without a kid and going for a sports career under those conditions is really hard, i don`t get why you keep complaining about the ending... o_O

ok, now i`ve decided, i`m a Seo Kouji fan for life, this series was somewhat close to a masterpiece... and to those who haven`t read carefully and said that all the track theme went down the toilet, Yamato hasn`t completely dropped, you know... it`s some kind of an open ending and i`m really glad that he decided to go for that...

the second 10/10 rating i`ll ever give a manga series as long as i keep reading and the only one of the kind, since i`ve been reading mostly seinen up until now... no

I agree with everything you said in the post. I just finished reading the manga and as far as I can see Yamato is still doing track and field at that Addilax company in the last chapter.

For me, that was the main point of the manga: two young people sorting out thier priorities and finally realizing what was really important to them.

Competing against others and striving to achieve ambitious goals is a really great dream, but when it comes right down to it there are far more important things in life than trying to jump a centimeter higher than you did last week or struggling to run a split second faster than somebody else.

For Suzuka, we found out very early in the series that a lot of her obsession with excelling at the high jump was a result of the enormous pressure she was under from friends, teachers, etc.: she was just trying to live up to everybody's expectations. When she found out she was pregnant, that finally led her to accept that her child and the man she loved were more important to her than all the goals other people had imposed on her.

I thought Arima was a great bad example in the series. He thought he was really hot stuff because he was a fast sprinter, but when you looked at how he acted towards other people he turned out to be pretty worthless as a human being: just another stupid bully with an overinflated ego desperate for attention. Yamato and Suzuka, on the other hand, realized that people were more important than track records.

I love this post. I think Arima was essential towards the end of the series. If it wasn't for him Yamato may have gone along with the abortion IMO. Arima made him realize that their careers meant nothing if they didn't place their loved ones above everything else.

So... I watched the anime back in my first year of college (I'm graduating now) and I fell in love with the story. Albeit, I felt that Yamato-kun was a really big idiot in how he treated Honoka-chan. In my eyes, Honoka-chan is the best girlfriend you could ask for, even if she's not confident in herself and gets jealous easily. But Suzuka... I don't get her. Nor do I understand girls in real life either. She was so wishy washy about her feelings. So I decided to read the remaining manga chapters that weren't covered in the anime after rewatching the series recently. My perspective on Suzuka-chan changed so much. Although she's hesitant to show Yamato-kun her feelings, once he brought through her barriers twice, I saw her as the ideal girlfriend. In my opinion, the ending was AWESOME. I loved how Yasunobu-kun, Miki-chan, and the sempai-tachi gave them a marriage celebration even though they couldn't afford a wedding at the time. That was so sweet. (Yes I'm a guy but I can't help being emotional... no I'm not gay). It made me really think about life. This is how love should be. Even if you're broken apart, your true feelings for each other will never fade away. If you're destined for each other, no matter what you'll be with each other. This includes everyone (LGBT community too). SUZUKA is one of my two favorite stories. It's tied with FUSHIGI YUUGI.

10/10 - I've recommended all of my friends to watch the anime and read the manga. I don't normally do that unless I feel it's really good.
