I was pretty surprised to read that many of the north amrican forum users are of asian heritage. I was just wondering if
1. there is a a big percentage of asians amoung the Manga/anime fans in the US
2. do many of the asian americans come in contact with manga/anime because of your heritage?
3. do you asian americans feel that manga/anime is a part of "your" cultur?
hm, thats it. I guess the whole asian american fan group explains where all the translators come from. I was always wondering where scanslators find there japanese/korean translators from

1) Most Asians know about anime/manga. That doesn't mean they have to like it...There IS a large number though. Also, there's more whites that like anime/manga now. I went to AnimeExpo this year and it was packed with all kinds of people. Racial differences don't dictate what you have to like.

2) Well, kinda...It's not really heritage in the sense of the word, but most Asians in America know at least some kind of anime/manga. Ever seen those Hong Kong bootlegs? There's also the growing white population with Cartoon Network and Adult Swim...

3) I wouldn't call it a culture for Asian Americans. Japanese culture, probably more so than others. Not as much for the Chinese or other groups. Of course, our Asian culture revolves more around our history as a racial group. It's thousands of years of heritage~ Manga and anime don't come close to that. (Although there are very early forms of manga...)

Yes, although a majority of otaku that I see at cons (and I mean otaku in the nicest way possible) seem to be white. Around ten percent are black. No idea how many are Latino but there seem to be more black anime fans than Latino anime fans (I'm white btw and I've known white, asian, and black anime fans).

1. yes there are a lot of asians who like anime/manga.. thats like saying lot sof black people like hip hop.. its just a sterotypical things.. where ever it originates than most of the people would like it.. im just being sterotypical so i dont mean to offend anyone..

2. Aucutally its not a heritage to me.. i just like it, most of my asian friends like it too.. and usually i think not lots of white people or anyother race likes it because its not part of their culture or just sounds wack..

3. Well.. im filippino.. philippines a country that was taken over by japan and was raped and pillaged (not trying to say japan is cruel.. its just history)

and well philippines was taken over numerous times inluding by spain and the us.. because of that they influcend the philippines (like how the philippines is the only REAL catholic asian country in the world, more than 3/4 of the population if catholic).. all i can say is that my filippino culture has a mix of everything.. and that manga is just a trend..

just so you know theres also a fairly big hispanic population thats into anime. Here in puerto rico theres
a tons of anime fans, theres even anime conventions
in different universities. we have a number of dubbing companies one being mexico. hell we even draw a number doujinshis (non-H) that pretty famous like raruto...

1) Dunno about US, but Canada is fairly diverse, with at most probably 30% of people i see at conventions and such being asian, but then again a lot cosplay so i can't be too sure.

2) Like Traitor said, it really just draws you. Maybe its sort of like a lingering affection for childhood cartoons...? But you now want something animated, but also suitable for your more mature tastes, lol

3) Nah, asides from the fact that my culture (Chinese) is often seen as fairly similar to Japanese culture, its quite different, and anime is just one of those things that spilled over, and you either like or don't.

I grew up watching raw anime, chinese dubs, as well as english cartoons. i would probably say the likelyhood of you being asian and liking anime/manga is very high. The style of the artwork shares many resemblances with artwork in paintings and drawings of chinese/japanese history.

Also you cant forget the influence of tv programs (where many shows are animated on many channels), history (lots of references to the past, 3 kingdoms, Meiji Restoration, etc) and culture (religion - mainly buddism, philosophy - Confucianism, daily life - cute objects, c-town,lt, education, family life,etc ). Another factor for me was that i outgrew the kiddy cartoons shown on tv that anime became an alternative.

As far as if it's a part of their culture, it pretty much is. Well, to be more specific, manga belongs to the Japanese culture and Manwha to the Korean culture, but you get what I'm saying...

I wonder if the situation changed though, since this thread was made. Are there still a majority of the North-American users Asian? This question could even extent globally.

Well I'm not north american, but I will answer anyways.

Well, indeed heritage has something to do sometimes, when I was a kid it was enough to hear from my dad that they were japanese to keep watching. Japanese inmigrants here would usually buy japanese brands if possible, like in cars, electronics, etc. And so some people I know would read manga and watch anime because it's from Japan too. They aren't otaku though

I don't think it's a part of my culture, since I'm in the side that doesn't know his parent's language. So it's more like of a hobby.

From what I've witnessed, asians have 3 things in common. Hardwork(didn't matter how much u made, as long as you worked hard, gambling, and drinking. Mr. Yin the local chinese restaurant owner dedicates his life to perfecting his chicken recipe for the local hyenas. He drinks, gambles, and sell illegal fireworks. He is a well respected member of the asian/minotiry community. makes the best damn chicken in the world.
