Quote from funkmu1
was saikano mentioned?

I was actually thinking that. I think that Kenshin is a pretty sad story too, as well as School Days(when you look past the vindication at the end). The ending of H2 made me sad too.

Have to go with Saikano. Actually, I just finished reading it. It's just an overall depressing manga. It's like the mangaka got the sweetest girl imaginable, gave her a boyfriend and a resolve to "fall in love", and then threw her and her boyfriend into a series of cruel events that made them and those around them suffer a very depressing life. This manga had me going through moods swings while reading it. One moment I'm laughing, the next moment I'm doing that thing where you cover your mouth and hold back tears (that is if you could hold back your tears). So far, this is the only manga that has actually made me shed tears while reading. Bravo to the mangaka for being able to portray the characters' emotions to the extent that you actually empathize with them.

I'm 90% sure Saikano was written for the sole purpose of being depressing as hell. Every 5 seconds they have to remind you that this is "the last time" something good of a particular nature was ever going to happen, and the entire concept seemed to sacrifice both realism and common sense in order to create an even more depressing story. The only reason that this manga wouldn't be the most depressing manga ever (just damn close) was because of the small bits of light hearted comedy mixed in (especially near the end).

Edit: *Thus concludes post #200*

Jiraishin is a depressing manga series, since so many f***ed up things happen in it. 20th Century Boys can be depressing at times since the good guys (ie, the protagonists) always seem to lose their battles. Same with Monster. I agree with those that say Battle Royale. Some seriously messed up things happen in there. Though based off things I've heard, the tokyopop adaptation seriously messed up what the story was supposed to be about. Even more depressing because of how it ended, personally.

I go with Saikano too, the sub-title "The last lovesong in this little planet" says it all. Shin Takahashi is one of the best mangakas i know when talking about storytelling (after reading his other works)

Speaking of good guys losing their battles, I think X-1999 was depressing in that aspect. I mean, did they even win once? Lol. Oddly enough, I still loved that manga. Hopefully, Clamp will resume with that project.

Threads of time was very depressing
and tragic and with sever plot twists...
but had a really good ending after all.
So.. if you like depressing manga but don`t want
to stay depressed after reading it too (saikano... cry , cough...cough),
it would be a very good choice.

Also i have to mention ichigo 100%... that %$@#@!
made me feel so depressed after finishing it, and the
worst is i wasn`t expecting it...really...really bad end.

Finally kimi ga nozomu eien ... is just the most depressing
thing i`ve come along... depressing from the begining to the end.
(this one is only an anime though as far as i know)

saikano for sure but the more depressimg one was ummm.. let me think the one about the prostitute. Deep love. That was just crazy outrageously sad. If i had seen as much tragedy as those two in the end i don't know if i could've stayed alive. That's why the stories so unbelievable though.

omg yes. And it had such a cheerful beginning too. This was very depressing, again moreso for me because I hated the ending (cheering for haruka all the way).

That is the one called Rumbling Hearts in the Funimation dub right? Yeah, the middle was sad, but not so much the end.

Saikano- I think everyone pretty much agrees w/ this

Bitter Virgin- Seriously nothing goes right in this manga. Child rape, teen pregnancy, abortion, still-birth, and a crazy psycho-b*tch trying to stab people w/ scissors. The mood of this manga always takes one-step forward and two steps back. The mangaka even admits to having a nervous break down while writing this manga.

Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei . I know it's supposed to be black humor which I ordinarily don't mind but somehow, it makes me really depressed.

Oh btw, I rarely get depressed that easily whether it be a scene in manga, anime or a game. I'm usually be extremely interested in watching said character die or if not, go "Why can't you just kill him/her ready? Hurry up and kill his wife/children and make him cry." laugh
