I am really impressed by how many people have quite the nice collection of languages they can actually communicate in!

My first is German, followed by English, a foundation in French (understanding way better than speaking) and enough Thai to chatter along.
A bunch of words in Korean and Japanese but mostly martial-art related.
And I can count to 4 in Finish! roll eyes Heard it as a child and couldn't forget it.
I plan to take spanish classes this year or next and learn at least one of the old european/oriental languages (Latin, Greek, Arabic...).

I'm proficient in two and know around.. 4 or 5, I think. And the basics of most European languages.
So, my mother tongue - Bulgarian. From that, I can understand all slavic languages to a point. Especially Macedonian.
I'm proficient in English /British and American/. I learned Spanish but I'm not really good with it. I also learned Russian at school, but am mostly capable of understanding, I don't speak it well. I know bits and pieces of French, German and Italian. /matter of factly: I'll be starting German as a second language in university(there was no Italian or Japanese, I would've chosen one of those. Pity.)/
Aaand I know some Japanese /regular stuff: introductions, daily life phrases, etc. I fail at the writing system, though T_T/
Oh and I can count to 10/20 in a bunch of languages. xD

*sigh* I only speak English, but when I'm older I want to learn how to speak Cantonese. I think I might also ask a couple of my friends to teach me Tagalog.

3 years of Spanish lessons and 4 years of French lessons and I still can't speak more than a few words which I frequently mix up. I can't understand it at all and can read more words than I can varbally cpommunicate but not even at a level good enough to hold even a basic conversation. In fact I think I known more Japanese words by now.

In short I suck at languages, they just don't go into my head. I have great difficulty with music since I can never remember the latin, it took me years to learn the meaning of the most common musical phrases and in the dojo I make my aikido sensei despair with my inability to remember the names of any of the techniques. I would like to learn a language I just don't seem able to.

Obviously I can speak English since I am English but beyond that I'm pretty useless.

EDIT: I get that some people are joking but I should point out there is no such language as American or Canadian. It's like saying you speak Scottish. At most you can call them dialects. This is just national pride coming into play.

I speak fluently English and Urdu and am alright in Punjabi. I can read Arabic. I am currently learning German through an education course. At home I'm being self-taught in Japanese(my japanese used to be good when I was about 13-14 and then I quit it and now at 19, learning it again). biggrin
Also, I have a younger sister who is really good at French due to schooling so she teaches me a LOT of words and sentences.

Since I started working, I had to pick up Spanish. I only understand spanish related to cakes, prices, and etc, LOL. (I work in a bakery famous for it's strawberry cakes and all~)

Secondly, I know Cantonese. But I'm slowly forgetting it. I do not talk to anybody in Cantonese anymore, and it was a language I was fluent in. It's my second language. If anything, I want to avoid speaking in Cantonese now.. My accent is badly diluted since I also use to speak Vietnamese so the pronunciations are off, and yeah. :[ I also had more than 7 years of Mandarin, but I forgot it! My god >_< I'm just not good with languages.

I'm fluent in English. *__*

I understand basic Japanese. I have about 3-4 years of it.

I remember the Korean alphabet, and a few words. But that's all.

Pretty well: English & Thai
Daily-life Communication: Mandarin (I took Mandarin till high school)
Start learning: Spanish

I can write Katakana and Hiragana and know random words in Japanese just because I listen to Japanese songs a lot. I love language but my attention on learning them are short. It depends on my mood whether I want to learn what and when. >_<
