No, I don't love my country's government. In Singapore, I don't think most of the citizens understand patriotism and neither do I. They mainly show "patriotism" only 'cos they will be punished by the government, if they fail to do so. Most of the people here don't really understand the meaning of rights, feel very uncomfortable when you ask them what they love about their country(well, they will still give you an answer, I suppose), etc.

If there is any real patriotism, it's usually suppressed heavily for fear of action from the society and in turn the government. This country is quite like North Korea at times and there're still many people who undergo ideological indoctrination, especially eugenics regarding social class and then, racial purity. Of course, they don't detain people under the ISA anymore but they can still make someone's life a living hell. smile

Btw, even if the government here cares for its citizens, the citizens love it not really 'cos of true love but 'cos of fervent idolisation.

There's no point in loving or hating a conception.

Focus one's attention on the conceivers.

Yet people regularly die for the conception of God (not saying he exists or doesn't exist, just saying that people do), and people die regularly for the conception of their country and their perceived conception of the virtues of that nation.

You focus your attention on the conceivers because you love the conception and are willing to defend it against changes by different concievers.

As for me, I am a United States citizen and while I have loved living in my country, I am incredibly baffled by the current political polarization that has really fucked us over. As a liberal independent, I really don't understand the mindboggling tea party agenda and their incredible way of influencing the uneducated masses because some of their platforms truly do not make any sense in any conceivable context. This has led me to question my nation's political ability to pass policy anymore.

That being said, I think it's generally human nature to hate or dislike their government, even if they love their country. I mean, I'd rather not have my country fuck me over because I smoke a chill herb and I'd rather not pay exorbitant taxes, thus the government is usually irksome.

No. I totally hate my country's government. I live in Singapore. Living here is as though as there isn't any freedom for us. Even studying is compulsory until O levels. However even with O levels, finding a job is as though as finding a needle in a haystack. Seeing that there are foreigners everywhere. As quoted by one of the recent general election participant "When I was young, I take the MRT, I see Singaporeans everywhere. Now when I take the MRT, I feel like I'm going overseas everyday." Which I totally agree with.

Plus having a government that favors the foreigners totally sucks. Out of the so called 5 million population that we have, I believe that 3/5 of them are foreigners. Even most recently, we had our National Day Parade[NDP], one of the members of parliament, during the national anthem was using her phone. How outrageous it was, when the young was taught from the start to be at attention when the national anthem was playing. And at her facebook page, where she posted how she "respected" the NDP, there were many whom was throwing remarks on that status, and on that very status, a Fillipino maid or I suppose so, scolded us Singaporeans- Moronic, incompetent, etc etc. She even said that at the very sight of war, those National Servicemen would flee at the sight of it. Meaning she's totally insulting us Singaporeans, the rightful citizens. In which way is this fair? Even sometimes, when foreigners posts racist remarks in Singapore, they were let off lightly, while the citizens face a more harsher punishment, where is the justice in this? Even becoming a Singaporean citizen is as easy as 123 whereas in other countries, people have to slog their guts out to become citizens. Just proves to show how useless our government is.

Corruption and deception will be rampant in every government, but I believe that (forgetting the economy) my US Democracy is pretty good. There aren't many countries I'd rather live than here, even with all the problems.

'Government' is a human concept. Thus, it is inherently flawed. It is but a mere tool for humans to use as they deem fit. I do not dislike nor like the government of my nation - I dislike the people who control the government. But I do not forget that in the end, the government is entirely composed of people with thoughts analogous to mine, and in that I see a ray of hope.

Well, I live in the United States and the one thing people know what to do in this country is: complain... about the debt, every politician, being green or not, lobbying by big companies, medical care, housing market, the recession.... but.... I think that compared to other countries the government is doing a pretty good job of keeping the majority of people at an acceptable level of proper living. I mean, compared to my country, at least there are no common(everyday) terrorist groups that bring a need for a night time curfew in some cities- so I wouldn't say I love this government, but I do appreciate it. Overall, I think that even thou some countries' governments are indeed better than others, people in each will always find something wrong with it..... after all, nothing can be perfect

I agree. I think we Americans are a bit spoiled. Everyone's complaining how our current President has led us to ruin but if I remember correctly we were saying the exact same thing about Bush. Maybe it's our attention span that's waning but all those problems are coming from problems that have arisen over the years, before Obama was put in office. How can we expect things to change if we don't do anything ourselves. We have the privilege to, and yet we sit around complaining about what we would want to be done instead of attempting to implement as such into the way we live. Compared to a lot of other countries, our standards of living are pretty good. Everyone uses that freedom, however, we use it to argue ceaselessly instead of coming to agreements using our unique points of view. :/

Exactly, the ideal of Socialism is great, and if everything worked the way it is supposed to, it would be heaven-on-earth... but sadly, humans aren't that simple or accepting.

Surely best it may be. But I still think that it really sucks to live in a country that favors foreigners more than their own citizens. Our PM even said that Singapore as very limited talent pool and we need the foreigners. It is too much, and they even recruit ridiculous people into their political party[Tin Pei Ling]. Just proves to show how short sighted they are. Speaking about education, IMO, i think western countries way of teachings are far more better than Singapore. Because in our schools, we are often spoonfed, and when we finally approach the working world, one whole lot of things are totally different from what we learnt. So yea.. none
