Thanks a lot, this archive is great. So, manga files were available back then, and reviews played a major role. The comment/rating system has changed. Categories seem to be a "newer" feature just like the forums. But the layout is still the same. Interesting.

Manga files were not available for download by us. The download links always linked to an external location, whether that be a torrent file, a specific thread in a forum, or a download site like mediafire

@ Tripitaka: Here's a snapshot from the day the site when live in 2004.

My question: What does this icon ---> embarrassed mean? I'm not good with facial expressions.

I believe it's an expression of shock or surprise - hence the mouth being open. Most emoticons for :-O (or without a nose) use open eyes, not closed ones, so maybe the MU emoticon is a bit confusing.

My use of it is somewhere around "preachy" or an "I told you so" manner.

I always saw it as yawning too, or maybe "lalala don't wanna hear /see you." lol
( p.s. I think you mean thought and not tough)

I never saw it as shocked because I use this face eek .

Preachy...interesting. I guess I can see that, but it's weird. I don't see preachy as one of the must have emoticons that need to be in the set.

Thanks for the replies. I'll keep them in mind the next time I need to decipher another post.

I need to write a research paper, so I decided to do it on manga scanlations, essentially the pros vs cons (does it hurt the American manga industry, piracy, etc.). But I need it to be more specific than that. Any ideas?

I'm reading Nobunaga no Chef right now and I reached the page in which Ken puts stones in a pile in memory of a dead guy. I think I read something about this, but it was a very long time ago and I don't remember what it's called. I assume it's some kind of Buddhist practice...? Does any of you know its name so I could look it up?

I don't know the cultural significance or history or anything, but from fiddling around with Google searches I found that that sort of stone pile is called a "cairn."

Posting this in the hope that someone here has worked at a bank, has family/friends that have worked at a bank, etc. and may have an idea of what really happened here. none

In early October I did an ATM deposit -- deposit slip plus two checks in an envelope (this ATM requires an envelope, it's not the kind that scans the checks). A week or so later I got a letter from my bank "adjusting" my deposit because (they say) there was only one check in the envelope.

I know for a FACT that all three papers (deposit slip & two checks) went into the envelope. I'm a bit OCD about money stuff & ALWAYS follow the same routine with my deposits; there's simply no way I would have done anything else with the check & deposit slip (and if by some weird one-in-a-bazillion-chance I did, they would have turned up by now - and they haven't).

I have called the bank multiple times & they say they have looked through all the trash from the ATM area & found nothing (they keep it for a while & then shred it). They say they have called the company that services the ATM and that company has searched all over and found nothing. They say they have done everything they can and the check & deposit slip are nowhere to be found.

They say they have no idea how it could have disappeared, and have repeatedly hinted that I didn't actually put the deposit slip & second check into the envelope. Basically they're shrugging and saying "sorry, not our problem". (And I'm saying, "Thanks so much for nothing, moving all my money elsewhere, bye~".)

The check hasn't cleared, so it doesn't seem to be an issue of someone trying to steal the money.

If it matters at all, the check the bank did get was from the State I live in, and was larger than a standard check. The check that disappeared was from the church I work for, and was standard check size (same size as deposit slip).

Anyone have ideas for what actually happened here?? It irritates the heck out of me that they're just shrugging this off and I WANT TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENED TO MY CHECK, gosh darn it!! laugh

Well, i don't work at a bank, but I had worked with checks and with banks a lot.... The higher chance is a simple human mistake. They either didn't notice, an employee did the mistake and noticed but it's pretending nothing happen to save face, or it's a mistake of someone hight enough on the bank to be stubborn about it.

When the system is Human based the chances of making a mistake are big, and every single employee there thinks the same than you "I couldn't possible had made that mistake", to make matters worst, even if someone there knows he lost the check they won't say a word because the pan is too hot to hold at this point... and finally there is the chance the mistake was made by someone who is important whiting the bank, if that's the case they can just decide you don't matter as a client enough to lose face for you.
