Hey!

I'm looking for a good manga set in the heian period or earlier:

Jōmon period
Yayoi period
Kofun period
Asuka period
Nara period
Heian period

I read primarily shojou, josei, seinen....shounen not so much. But if it's a good enough series and especially if it's god some romance than i'd love to give it a shot.

i suppose anything ancient/classical japanese history works too, as well as any corresponding period of chinese or other culture's history.

I have only heard of the Heian period (or any of those ones) from Minamoto-Kun Monogatari, which is a modern rendition of the famous Genji Monogatari. The heroine is an assistant professor that is obsessed with that story, making plenty of old references. It is a nice, new seinen series with short chapters.

There is a bunch of stories about Genji Monogatari, either modern, alternative universe or following the story type of manga.
Just search for Genji in titles.
There is also Heian Era tag.

I think there was one about Himiko as well, but i really can't remember the exact title so i can't really help you much D:
