I've watched anime with my parents (well, mom & step-dad), AND my kids.

Granted it was only stuff where I pretty much knew what to expect... A bit of fan service here & there doesn't bother me, but like so many have said, it can be overdone & then it loses its appeal completely.

cause fanservice is sometimes lame.

example:
wind blows the skirt of a female(mostly main characters)
male main goes nose bleed...
then the cliché omg misunderstanding lines... sigh*

i mean in our world nobody goes nosebleeds if you saw the girls panties.
if you do then you may have problems.

Those are in-jokes. Fanservice is commonly understood to mean things like panty and cleavage shots, bare-chested guys, where it has no meaning to the story. I'm not going to get into an argument whether all 'fanservice' is okay because you think it includes in-jokes which are not sexual.

And as a girl, manga that depends mostly on fanservice for humour is not going to make me laugh, unless it's guy fanservice. And I don't think those stories are 'good'. I think for a manga to be objectively 'good', it should appeal to both guys and girls.

That doesn't mean I think it should be banned or anything, just that I don't like my manga series to stick fanservice in them unless it's primarily a fanservice series.

Hey now, I'm a (straight) girl, and I've laughed at my share of "appeals to guys" fanservice humor~ I don't read manga that's really heavy on the fanservice, but in its place, it can be quite amusing regardless of which gender of fans is being "served".

As far as manga appealing to both guys & girls in order to be "good", I don't think that's necessarily true. I'm not going to argue the merits of any specific manga, but some stories are simply going to appeal much more to males or to females, and just because the majority of the other gender isn't too interested doesn't make them any less "good".

I completely agree with TofuQueen. I have no problem with humourus fanservice (love hina anyone?).
Usually I manage to ignore fanservice in other titles but it starts getting annoying when it's overdone. I am girl and it's giving me nothing when I look at other girls breats or panties for the love of god. Whatever japanese get out of them anyway *sigh*
But series with this much fanservice are so clearly targeted at boys usually I wouldn't like the plot anyway ^^ so no problem...

i dont mind the big boobs like in one piece or the occasional panties but some just add too much. an example of too much was the beggining of negima, but after maybe 40 chapters it started focusing more on the storyline and less on naked high schoolers.

I read manga and watch anime because I enjoy it, and I do NOT enjoy fanservice.
I do not find any enjoyment/humor/excitement or anything positive at all with it.
I find it just plain stupid and annoying, same thing with ecchi.

sometimes it´s okay. But it´s hard to explain a non manga reader that you read an ecchi manga because of the story *cough*negima*cough* and not because of the naked scenes and panty shots. It´s especially hard with Dance in the Vampire Bund since a classmater of mine thought it was some porn (there was a picture of the almost naked mina on the back). Really embarrasing.

And it get´s boring with always the same situations -.-

Fan service goes right through me. I hardly ever notice it.
It can get a bit "ok well this is like, the 100th time I've seen this situation", but I don't start moaning about it.
I don't really care.

I don't think fan service is bad. It's just that it's often done in facepalm inducing ways. It's fine with me as long is it doesn't make the story retarded

yeah i know this facepalm moments.

she is almost getting killed, but who cares, i can see her panties - is one of those ways. It makes the reputation of manga bad
