This new poll has been suggested by our member MewMan. Just choose the choice that best represents your experience with visual novels. If you didn't know, there are visual novels that are not 18+ in nature. For instance, the ones I tried would be the Love Hina one for the GBA and some of Ever 17. I also remember seeing some non-H stuff back in '06 of AnimeExpo.

You can discuss this poll on our forums here:
http://www.mangaupdates.com/showtopic.php?tid=20513

You can submit poll ideas here:
http://www.mangaupdates.com/showtopic.php?tid=3903

Previous Poll Results:
Question: Opinion on manga censoring?
Choices:
Unnecessary and annoying - votes: 6743 (39.3%)
All for it! Think about the kids! - votes: 621 (3.6%)
If it was meant to be for adults, why censor? - votes: 8320 (48.5%)
I don't care - votes: 1463 (8.5%)
There were 17147 total votes.
The poll ended: August 21st 2010

It's pretty obvious that the majority of people don't like censoring, yet it still happens because of laws... Blame all the people lobbying for it.

I've tried a couple (Amagami, Hiiro no Kakera, etc) and found them EXCRUCIATINGLY boring. Where's the "visual novels suck" option?

I agree that it was obvious most voters would end up not liking censorship.

Come on guys, visual novel is freaking awesome!!! If you want to know how awesome they are, then try to play some of the most famous popular and english translated games such as Fate/Stay Night, Tsukihime. if you prefer visual novel that have some game-play RPG elements, then go with Utawarerumono, Tear to tiara, Spirit of the Eternity Sword. Want to play something dark? Then go with Bible Black or Sengoku Rance. Interesting in mystery? Go and play Higurashi and chaos head.

More than 90% of visual novel aims towards male so if you are a guy, there are many option for you to choose. However, it doesn't mean that there is none visual novel targeting female. There are some visual novel called Otome Game, or games that aiming toward female audience. Sort of how Shoujo = for girls while shounen = for boys. One of the most popular otome game that has been translated to english is "Yo-Jin-Bo ~Unmei no Freude~"

Majority of visual novels are 18+ meaning they have graphic pictures, violences, vulgar languages or sex in them.

In my opinion, visual novel is 10 times better than a manga and 5 times better than anime.

I second Tears to Tiara and Utawarerumono. They were amazing! Seriously, rarely have I experienced such a good story in a game.

i played quite a few visual novels and they are much better than the anime/manga counterparts.
of all i played the best and probably most underrated is
SWAN SONG
very story heavy and dark,

i also second utawarerumono, FSN, TTT, Sengoku Rance, Tsukihime, Ever17, Saya no Uta
and so on...

just try them. they are very awesome.

Find one that doesn't have juvenile writing and look like mass-produced crap and I'll think about it.

You're probably the same as the protagonist in Saya no Uta. What is normal in normal people eyes is ugly to him and what normal people considered ugly is beautiful in his eyes.

It's a shame. I'd like to introduce Visual Novel to as many people as possible because the current VN community is relatively small compared to manga/anime communities.

I play VN as well but there's no way that it's 10 times better than manga and 5 times better than anime. Too much hassle to playsad
